  • As large-scale earthquakes have occurred in Korea and their aftermath continues to be felt, laws and regulations on seismic design have been emphasized, and in Korea, the seismic design standards have been newly revised after the Gyeongju earthquake. In the revised seismic design standards, a stability review for the destruction of the support activity of the breakwater was newly added. Therefore, in this study, we conducted a stability analysis on the seismic reinforcement method for the study site, and checked the ground acceleration of the subgrade and the displacement of the structure over time. As a result of the stability analysis, the safety factor increased by at least 0.5 and up to 1.7. As a result of the time history analysis, the displacement of the superstructure decreased by up to 290 mm and down to 12 mm in both the shallow and deep sections before and after reinforcement, and the ground acceleration decreased by up to 5.33 m/s and down to 0.31 m/s after reinforcement.

  • Stability investigations were conducted for the heap of coal associated wastes occurred from D mine located in Gang-Won Province from the geotechnical and environmental engineering aspect, and a countermeasure was also examined to increase the stability in this area. Quality of water flowed from the heap of coal associated wastes was identified as Am. Slope stability investigations were conducted with both circular failure analyses using SLOPILE program and planar failure analyses in cases of dry, rainy, and ordinary slopes. The results of circular failure analyses indicated that the factor of safety is 0.78 for rainy case. for planar failure analyses, the factor of safety decreases with increase the depth and reaches below 1 about 4m depth for rainy case. A retaining wall system with backfill using the recycled-concrete aggregates as a practical scheme was suggested to satisfy both demands: reducing Am generation, and enhancing slope stability in the deposits of coal associated wastes.

  • Back analysis has been used to evaluate the factor of safety and circular failure plane at the landfill failure site. However, the estimated circular failure plane by back analysis is quite different from what is observed in the field. Thus, this study was conducted to estimate an actual shear failure plane inside the ground which gives a more accurate failure plane. Cone penetration test (CPT), boring test, soft X-ray image scan, density logging, and ultrasonic logging were conducted at the field and laboratory. The result of CPT showed significantly lower cone resistance, pore pressure, and undrained shear strength at a particular part. This part is a possible shear failure plane inside the ground. To validate, the soft X-ray scan images were analyzed and found the disturbed (inclined) bedding plane induced by shear activity at the estimated shear failure plane. Density and ultrasonic logging tests also found a similar result. Thus, the method in this study is possible to estimate the shear failure plane inside the ground.

  • Reliability analyses of sixteen domestic design cases of open cell caisson breakwaters against circular sliding failure were conducted in this study. For the reliability analyses, uncertainties of parameters of soils, mound, and concrete cap were assessed. Bishop simplified method was used to obtain load and resistance of open cell caisson breakwater for randomly generated open cell caisson breakwater. Sufficient number of Monte Carlo simulations were conducted for randomly generated open cell caisson breakwaters, and statistical analysis was conducted on loads and resistances collected from the large number of Monte Carlo simulations. Probability of failure produced from Monte Carlo simulation has a nonconvergence issue for very low probability of failure; therefore, First-Order Reliability Method (FORM) was conducted using the statistical characteristics of loads and resistances of open cell caisson breakwaters. In addition, effects of safety factor, uncertainties of load and resistance, and correlation between load and resistance on reliability of open cell caisson breakwaters against circular sliding failure were examined.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the problem of analysis method of circular sliding, which uses a high rate to work out a countermeasure for landslides. The results of this study were summarized as follows : 1. As a result of the analysis of sliding surface along the soil layers in forty model slopes, the boundary layer in weathered soil and weathered rock indicated a very high possibility of sliding than in other places. 2. Because most landslides in Korea occur along the discontinuity face at the boundary of soil layers, below 2m. from land surface, it is a good method for safe design to work the countermeasure for these kinds of landslides in cutting slopes. 3. When the inclination of slopes is fixed and the length of slopes is changed, the cercular sliding slopes were more safe as the soil layers are more shallow and the length of slopes are shorter, but the safety ratio of infinite sliding slopes was same as the other even though their length of slopes was different. 4. As a result of the analysis by cercular sliding analysis method and infinite sliding analysis method with some condition that the inclination of slopes was $30^{\circ}$ degree, because most landslides in Korea occur at this condition, these methods indicated different results to each other as well as cercular sliding analysis method showed too much safety ratio than infinite sliding analysis method.

  • The effect of cutting-off the leakage was identified by the cement based wall mass constructed in underground, as complete facilities for reinforcement in shear strength of landfill which was subjected to circular failure and for cutting-off the leachate from the costal waste landfill. By (1) visual inspection after underground excavating and (2) compressive strength test for core of underground wall, it could be identified that quality of wall mass constructed in underground was so effective, and by additional test, so as (3) in-situ permeability test in the hole after coring wall mass, (4) analyzing the characteristics of basic components and their profiles through the series of chemical experiments and (5) deciding the general distribution patterns from the chromatograms using GC-MS, it could be identified that watertight and cutting-off the leachate of wall mass constructed in underground was very effective. Therefore, it is concluded that five types of tests suggested in this study can judge the effect of cutting-off the leakage or infiltration of very high concentrated leachate from the waste landfill.

  • Load and resistance factor design of mound breakwater against circular failure was developed in this study. To achieve the goal, uncertainties of parameters of soils, mound, and concrete cap were determined. Eight design cases of domestic mound breakwaters were collected and analyzed. Monte Carlo Simulation was implemented to determine the most critical slip surfaces of the design cases. Using the results of Monte Carlo Simulation, First-Order Reliability Method (FORM) was used to perform reliability analyses. Optimal load and resistance factors were calculated using the reliability analysis results and final load and resistance factors were proposed based on the calculated optimal factors.

  • The stability of rock slopes is closely related to the factors such as: type of rock, development of geological structures, weathering, characteristics of rock, and the shape of the geological features. When we design the rock slope, the slope stability is determined by the discontinuity causing the circular, plane or wedge failure. The failure happens when the slope is under the unstable geological condition. But in some cases, slope failure has occurred even though the slope is under stable geological conditions. In this respect, this paper presents the plane failure conditions for domestic rock slopes through research of sites where slope failure has occurred regardless of whether or not it satisfied the stable geological conditions.

  • A new computer program SLOPILE(Ver 3.0) is developed to analyze stability of slopes containing an earth retention system composing of piles, nails and anchors. SLOPILE(Ver 3.0) can calculate the slope stability for both planar failure surfaces in infinite slopes and arc failure surfaces. In order to investigate a design adaptability of SLOPILE(Ver 3.0), analysis results of TALREN and SLOPE/W programs are compared with that of SLOPILE(Ver 3.0). SLOPILE(Ver 3.0) can calculate the slopes reinforced by earth retention system such as piles, nails and anchors. But, TALREN and SLOPE/W can not calculate the slope reinforced by piles. As a analysis result of the example case, SLOPILE(Ver 3.0) is accuracy and suitable program for the stability analysis of slopes reinforced by earth retention system. Therefore, SLOPILE(Ver 3.0) is the most suitable program to analyze the slope reinforced by the earth retention system.
