  • The present study numerically investigates three-dimensional laminar flow past a rotating circular cylinder placed in a uniform stream. For the purpose of a careful analysis of the modification of flow by the effect of the rotation on the flow, numerical simulations are performed at a various range of rotational coefficients ($0{\leq}{\alpha}{\leq}2.5$) at one Reynolds number of 300. As ${\alpha}$ increases, flow becomes stabilized and finally a steady state beyond the critical rotational coefficient. The 3D (three dimensional) wake mode of the stationary cylinder defined at this Reynolds number has been disorganized according to ${\alpha}$, which were observed by the visualization of 3D vortical structures. The variation of the Strouhal number is very weak when the wake pattern is changed according to the rotational coefficient. As ${\alpha}$ increases, the lift increases, whereas the drag decreases.

  • Thermophoretic particle deposition on a circular cylinder in a uniform laminar air flow was numerically investigated using a control volume method based on the generalized non-orthogonal coordinate system. Variation of air properties due to the change of temperature was taken into account. Effects of variable property on the distribution of heat transfer and deposition rates of particle were discussed. A new correlation of thermophoretic particle deposition on a circular cylinder was proposed in the present study.

  • The present paper is Part 2 of three-part paper for an experimental study on breaking waves generated by a submerged cylinder. Measurements of velocity and head loss profiles at the wakes of cylinder and breaker as well as the turbulent intensities in breaking region were made to elucidate the viscous aspects of breaking waves. Their mutual correlation is also investigated. It is found that the head loss profile is an excellent indicator of the strength and extent of breaker. Very high turbulent intensities measured at and just downstream of the breaker indicate the consequence of energy transfer of wave breaking into turbulence.

  • Flow patterns in the presence of two identical nearby circular cylinders at Re=100 were numerically studied. We considered all possible arrangements of the two circular cylinders in terms of the distance between the two cylinders and the inclination angle with respect to the direction of the main flow. Eight distinct flow patterns were identified based on vorticity contours and streamlines, which are Base-Bleed, Biased-Base-Bleed, Shear-Layer-Reattachment, Induced-Separation, Vortex-Impingement, Flip-Flopping, Modulated Periodic, and Synchronized-Vortex-Shedding. Collecting all the numerical results, we propose a general flow pattern diagram for flows past two nearby cylinders. The perfect geometrical symmetry implied in the flow configuration allows one to use this diagram to distinguish flow patterns in the presence of two identical circular cylinders arbitrarily positioned in physical space with respect to the main flow direction.

  • Numerical simulations are performed for the thermal fluid flow around a circular cylinder, and the particle trajectories are calculated to investigate the particle motions and deposition characteristics. We aim to understand the effects of three important parameters (particle Stokes number, temperature difference in the flow and on the cylinder surface, and thermal conductivity ratio between the fluid and the particles) on the deposition efficiency. The results show that the thermophorectic effect is insignificant for particles with large Stokes numbers, but it affects particles with small Stokes numbers. The deposition efficiency increases with the increase in temperature difference between the flow and the cylinder or the decrease in ratio of thermal conductivity of the particles to the fluid. When thermophoresis becomes significant, the particles are deposited even on the back side of the cylinder.

  • Many researches were carried out to estimate heat transfer rate on a circular cylinder in a uniform flow. Various empirical correlations were suggested in the past through expermental studies, however there are considerable discrepancies in the estimated values of heat transfer coefficient. Effects of variable properties of fluid on the heat transfer between a circular cylinder and the external uniform flow were numerically investigated in the present study. The flow and temperature fields were solved using a finite volume method for the uniform flow temperature of 200-900K and the wall temperature of 300-900K. The cold as well as the hot cylinders in the uniform flow of constant temperature were investigated. A unified correlation was obtained for the both cases.

  • The roll damping problem in the design of ships and offshore structures remains a challenge to many researchers due to the fluid viscosity and nonlinearity of the phenomenon itself. In this paper, the study on viscous roll damping of a circular cylinder was carried out using forced oscillations. The roll moment generated by forced oscillation using a torque sensor was measured for each forced oscillation period and compared with the empirical formula. Although the magnitude of the measured torque from the shear force was relatively small, the results were qualitatively similar to those obtained from the empirical formula, and showed good agreement with the quantitative results in some oscillation periods. In addition, the flow around the circular cylinder wall was observed closely through the PIV measurements. Owing to the fluid viscosity, a boundary layer was formed near the wall of the circular cylinder, and a minute wave was generated by periodical forced oscillations at the free surface through the PIV measurement. In this study, the suitability of the empirical formula for the roll moment caused by viscous roll damping was verified by model tests. The wave making phenomenon due to the fluid viscosity around the wall of a circular cylinder was testified by PIV measurements.

  • Flow around an oscillating circular cylinder was experimentally investigated. With varying Keulegen-Carpenter(KC) number from 10 to 30 the flow field with vortex sheddings and the related hydrodynamic fortes exerting on the cylinder were measured. A newly developed PW(paricle image velocimetry) successfully captured the complex vortical flows varying with the KC number and the flow patterns were 'traverse street', 'single pairing' and 'double pairing' of vortices with increasing KC number, At a certain KC number range the lift force undergoes a transition showing little periodicity due to surrounding complicated shedded vortices.
