  • This study has researched the uses and plant materials of bamboo screen from the gardening books in Ming Dynasty: Yuanye (園冶), Zhang wu ji (長物志) and Xian Qing Ou Ji (閑情偶寄). The results were as follows; first, though these books nearly were written nearly at the same period, the bamboo screen was seen in a negative viewpoint or positively endorsed by authors. These show the extinctive process which had used bamboo screen creating for urban seclusion in early Ming Dynasty and that the meaning was changed by the social economic changes in Late Ming Dynasty. Second, the bamboo screen was devised as a support which was trained the branches of the creepers. This was an equipment to maximize ornamental effectiveness with some rose families which produced nearly all year round, and it was involved cultural enjoyment of Chinese indigenous custom. Finally, the bamboo screen was used rose families for the beautiful flowers. And this was constructed as a multipurpose facility which was used as the flower screen in blossoming season as well as the role as wall.

  • This study was carried out to clarify the effects of grassland afforestation on some chemical properties of the Japanese ceder(Cryptomeria japonica) forest soil in Cheju Island. The following results were obtained in this study ; 1. T-C, T-N, exch. cations and base saturation in the surface soil(0~10cm) decreased sharply from planting to crown closure. However, after crown closure, exch. Ca and Mg increased considerably. On the other hand, there were no definit changes below surface soil. 2. In vertical distribution of chemical properties, T-C, T-N, exchangeable acidity and exch. cations decreased with soil depth. Especially, exch. Ca and Mg of surface soil in closed stand show a higher value than that in open stand, but there were no variation below surface soil. 3. In closed stand, the amounts of exch. Ca, Mg and K were 1.8 times, 1.6 times and 1.5 times greater than those in open stand. There was no significant difference between open and closed stand in T-C and T-N. 4. The ratios of the amounts of nutrients in surface soil to those in mineral horizons(ha, 50cm) between the open and closed stand showed 30% and 50% for exch. Ca, 30% and 40% for exch. Mg, 38% and 38% for exch. K, respectively.

  • In this study I examined the status of the borrowed scenery of Soshaewon and analyzed the structure of Byeolseo Gardenusing "Soshaewon Sisun(瀟灑園詩選)", which consists of a collection of poems written by people who visited Soshaewon during Joseon Dynasty with bibliographical explanations and "the Thirty Poems of Soshaewon", written by Yang, Gyeong Ji who was the fifth generation from Yang, San Bo. This study expanded the concept of borrowed scenery to include visual, synaesthetic, temporary and ideal features based on the theory of borrowed scenery in "Won Ya(園冶)", which emphasized the time feature and change, and explained that a landscape garden could be perfected by the presence of borrowed scenery beyond the previous borrowed landscape which was recognized through visual value. It would be correct to understand that the visitors to Soshaewon accomplished imaginary scenery(意境) through recreating Soshaewon into a space that stimulated poetic sentiment and aesthetic sensitivity by creating four types of borrowed scenery of a landscape garden composed of both real and fictitious scenery. At present the scope of Soshaewon tends to be limited to its inner garden covering the stream garden. However, in this study I took a new approach in defining the scope of Soshaewon, providing three types of Byeolseo Garden area ; more specifically, the expanded scope of Soshaewon covers the outer garden that secured the outlook of visual, temporary and synaesthetic objects for borrowed scenery and the right to use by purchasing more area by the descendants and the ideological garden that was composed of the ideal borrowed scenery created by the Confucian friends and colleagues who praised the Jeungamcheon Stream area and various famous mountains longing for the immortal world.

  • Ji Cheng''''s great work on garden design theory, the ''''Yuanye'''', written in 1631 and originally published in 1634 is the first surviving treatise and most famous and comprehensive work on the suvject in the Chinese tradition. He constructed Dongdiyuan in Changzhou about 1623, Wuyuan in Yizheng in 1631, and Yingyuan in Yangzhou about 1634. But no poems and paintings written by him still exist, and none of his known gardens has survived. Therefore his design philosophy is able to be interpreted only by his work, Yuanye. This study aims at investigating the garden design theory in Yuanye. The results were summarized as follows. 1) Yuanye reflected the garden tastes of literati, and Ji Cheng endeavored to express the deas of literati painting into gardens. 2) The essence of the garden design theory is Xingzao, and Yindi, following the existing lie of the land, and Jiejing, to borrow from the scenery, are two major activities of Xingzao. 3) Ji Cheng''''s design theory build up on the basis of recognizing the existence of masters. 4) Yindi is the environmental and ecological planning and design method. This is the activity to reach the state of artistry through suitability. 5) Jiejing is not merely borrowing the landscape but the making use of scenery around the garden. And only the master has the skill in fitting in with the form of the land. 6) Ji Cheng pursuits the garden which will look like something naturally created though manmade. It is the goal of the Chinese traditional gardens and ideal situation. 7) Ji Cheng aims to unify the environment and landscape design dialectically into Xingzao.

  • This study was carried out to improve cultivation techniques by low cost and labour saving in ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer) seedling production, by elucidating proper ratio virgin soil and organic fertilizer, suitable height of front piller. The obtained results are as follows ; The optimal ratio of white decomposition of virgin soil and organic fertilizer was 10:1 for good yield of standard seedling, The fittest height of front piller was 150 cm because of both good seedling growth and yield. The cost for production of seedling of ginseng could be reduced by both optimal ratio of virgin soil, organic fertilizer and selection of front piller height.

  • Plantaginis seed has been applied in Chinese medicine a as well as in folk remedy. It was advocated that Plantaginis S Semeη exerts good therapeutic effects as anti-inflammatory, antitussive, obstipant and diuretic agent in some cases of alimentary, respiratory a and renal disorders. This study was carried out in order to r re-evaluate the pharmacological action, especially the hypotensive a action of Plantaginis Semen and to elucidate the mechanism of its a action, making use of Plantaginis Semen methanol extract (PME), because its basic pharmacological action, i. e., hypotensive action is n not clear. 1) PME, when administered into intravenous route, elicited the h hypotensive response dependent on the dose of PME given to the rabbit anesthetized with urethane. 2) This hypotensive response of P PME was inhibited by atropine and potentiated by physostigmine, but not influ$\varepsilon$need by vagotomization. 3) Depressor effect of PME was blocked by chlorisondamine, phentolamine, and bethanicline, while not altered by cyproheptadine, diphenhydramine and propran¬olol. 4) The secondary pressor response after blocking the depressor e effect of PME by chlorisondamine was produced, but this pressor response was deminished by atropine. 5) PME augmented the pressor e effect of norepinephrine and angiotensin, on the other hand, reduced b blood pressure elevated by carotid occlusion reflex. 6) These observa¬t tions suggest that PME may induce the hypotensive response via dual mechanisms of parasympathomimetic and sympatholytic action, that the positions of this action are cholinergic peripheral site and sympathetic ganglia respectively, and that PME may possess the pressor activity caused by stimulation of "atropine-sensitive site" which seems to existsin the sympathetic ganglia.

  • This study aims to analyze the Spatial Imagery(Yijing) of the Weeping Bamboo Lodge(Xiaoxiangguan) which is from Chinese Qing dynasty novel "Dream of Red Mansions". The conclusions are as follows. First, the fantasy garden what is described in the novel "Dream of Red Mansions" can be recreated in reality. Second, through the analysis of the spatial imagery, the plants of the Weeping Bamboo Lodge contains a lot of meaning, and mainly through the plants to express meaning. Third, the main garden concept of the Weeping Bamboo Lodge is "Inspired by Nature", the representative space constitution principle is "the art of circuitous" and "view borrowing". Fourth, the concept of traditional garden in the novel "Dream of Red Mansions" and the landscape architecture theory book "Yuan Ye(Art of garden building)" is essentially in agreement. The generation process of garden spatial imagery was showed in this study, and on the basis of this, the garden spatial imagery of the Weeping Bamboo Lodge was analyzed. It is provided the useful information for the future research, and the novel "Dream of Red Mansions" as a important book was determined in the research of traditional garden.

  • For the purpose of investigation the local characteristics of the nutrient status in the Japanese cedar in Cheju island, the author have carried out chemical analysis of the soils and needles of established Japanese ceder forests in four site quality classified by height growth. Results were summarized as follows. 1. Site quality was related closely to exch. Ca, exch. Mg in the surface soil and to N, K and Ca concentrations in the needle. 2. Appropriate concentration of nutrients in the surface soil and current year's needles are exch. Ca>4.0(me/100g), exch. Mg>2.0(me/100g) and N>1.5(%), K>0.8(%), Ca>1.5(%). 3. In addition, the Ca : Mg : Na ratio of the exch. cation(me/100g) may be useful as an indicator in the assesment of site quality of Japanese cedar forests in Cheju island.

  • This paper attempted to examine the value of private house garden as a historical garden among local cultural heritages remaining in Chungcheong-do Province. To this end, the following conclusions were drawn through the framework of value analysis in which the contents of Ji Cheng's Yuanye of China, Tachibana Toshitsuna's Sakuteiki in Japan, and HISTORIC GARDENS THE FLORENCE CHARTER 1981 were applied to target sites. First, local cultural heritage belong to unregistered cultural heritage, and a total of 616 local cultural heritages in Chungcheong-do Province were identified, and Cheongju City possesses the largest number of local cultural heritages. Most of the local cultural heritages are distributed in ancient capital or adjacent to it, and five of the local heritages are related to historical garden. Second, the target sites were old houses constructed during the Joseon Dynasty with a long history, and although there were few changes in spatial division, the scale of some gardens and outer yard spaces was reduced due to urban planning, etc. Third, the target site is Sangjihapui(相地合宜) and Inchacheui(因借體宜) in location and space division, so the space is divided according to the surrounding terrain and the landscape is naturally drawn to construct a garden. Fourth, the garden of the target site has a structural value of a garden that is Jeongihapui(精而合宜) and Gyoideukche(巧而得體) as it is subtle and naturally constructed with the garden by grasping the surrounding terrain. Fifth, for the continuous preservation of historical garden, it is necessary to strengthen the already enacted local cultural heritage ordinance, and to establish a documentary project for each spatial component and a plan for climate change.
