  • This study investigated the differential effects of subjective evaluation for attention and situation adaptability, and motivation on driving mobility as a function of driver's age. The results can be summarized as followings. First, subjective capability evaluation tended to decrease as the drivers' age increased, and lower evaluation for situation adaptability seemed to be recognized earlier than attentional ability in middle-aged drivers. Second, although subjective evaluation for attentional ability predicted positively driving mobility of all age groups, but only subjective evaluation for situation adaptability predicted positively driving mobility of older drivers. Third, among motivational elements, BAS predicted positively driving mobility of young and middle-aged driviers, whereas BIS predicted positively driving mobility of older drivers. Finally, middle-aged drivers tended show increased driving mobility when their attentional ability score and BAS were high, whereas older drivers showed lowest level of driving mobility when their situation adaptability score and BIS were low. These results suggest importance of integrated consideration for drivers' subjective evaluation for attention and situation adaptability, and motivation to understand characteristics of driving mobility in different age groups.

  • Using level-3 automated driving simulation, this study examined the effects of before-after the obstacle avoidance(BOA and AOA, respectively) and driver age group on situation awareness, control transition time, and vehicle control performances. The results can be summarized as follows. First, the situation awareness of the participants was lower in the BOA section compared to the AOA section, and in the older driver group compared to the young driver group, and this tendency was more evident in the BOA section. Second, the control takeover time was significantly slower in the older driver group than in the younger driver group. Third, in all four vehicle control measures, worse performance was observed in the AOA section than in the BOA section, and in the older driver group than in the young driver group, but the difference between age groups in vehicle control performance was larger in the AOA section than in the BOA section. These results suggest that in a situation where the driver takes over control during autonomous driving and avoids obstacles by driving manually, the driver's situational awareness and vehicle control may vary depending on before and after the obstacle avoidance.

  • This study investigated the differential interactive effects of the combination of driving confidence and sensation-seeking on driving anger among different age groups, by using correlation analysis, a hierarchical regression and ANOVAs for the data gathered through the questionnaires administrated in a form of face-to-face interview. The results showed the followings. First, males tended to show higher level in driving anger than females. Second, whereas sensation-seeking was positively correlated with driving anger, age and driving experience were negatively correlated with driving anger, respectively. Third, although there was no significant relationship between driving confidence and driving anger among the drivers aged under 40 years, the drivers aged over 40 years showed higher level of driving anger as their driving confidence increased. Forth, level of sensation-seeking was found to be a strong predictor of driving anger in all age groups. Fifth, driving confidence and sensation-seeking appeared to affect the level of driving anger interactively among drivers aged under 40 years or over 65 years, resulting in higher driving anger only when both the levels of driving confidence and sensation-seeking were high. In contrast, driving confidence and sensation-seeking affected driving anger independently among the drivers aged 30-49 years. Implication and suggestion were discussed.

  • The purpose of this research is to study the relation between the change of driver's driving confidence level in the age categories and driving behavior. To survey the driving confidence level, we used the 'Driving Confidence Scale' questionnaire and surveyed the drive career, mileage, driving days, violation of traffic regulation (drunk driving, overspeed), traffic accident experience (assaulter, sufferer) together. The subjects of investigation were from 19-year-old to 80-year-old and 1,055 persons were participated in the research totally. To examinethe structure of driving confidence level, we executed the factor analysis. We compared the driving confidence level in the age categories (under 29-year-old, 30~39, 40~49, 50~64, over 65-year-old) and studied the relation between driving confidence level and driving behavior. Driving confidence level was composed of 4 factors such as 'insensibility to situation', 'unsafe driving', 'careless concentration' and 'self-efficacy of driving', and there was decreasing tendency for driving confidence level and overall driving behavior according to increasing age. Driving confidence level had the interrelation with age range, assaulting accident, suffered accident, driving period, drunk driving, overspeed, driving career and so on. We examined the difference of driving confidence level and driving behavior by dividing the participated drivers' groups into the traffic accident experienced group, drunk driving group and overspeed driving group, and there was a significant difference on driving confidence level and driving behavior between the group who had not experienced the violation of traffic regulation or traffic accident and another group who had experienced the violation of traffic regulation or traffic accident.

  • Differences in reaction time and accuracy were compared among driver groups of middle-, old-, and stroke old-age drivers using various reaction time tasks including simple reaction task, 2-choice task, 4-choice task with different stimuli eccentricity, search task, and moving target detection task. The results can be summarized as followings. First, although overall reaction time tended to be slowed with age and stroke, stroke old drivers showed significantly slower reaction time than the other driver groups when the stimuli were presented in a large eccentricity. Second, differences in reaction time for 2-choice task and moving target detection task seemed to be determined mainly by participants' simple reaction time. Third, the search task which required temporary retention of previously presented stimuli was found to be more sensitive in discriminating difference in reaction time between middle-age drivers and old-age drivers (including stroke old drivers). Fourth, reaction accuracy of old (and stroke old) drivers decreased when more stimuli alternatives were presented and temporary retention for stimuli was required. Altogether, memory demand in reaction time task can be sensitive to evaluate performance for different age groups, whereas size of useful field of view for brain stroke.

  • This study focused on estimating influential factors of traffic accidents and analyzing traffic accident severity of elderly and non elderly using traffic accident data. In order to reclassify elderly and non elderly traffic accident by a statistical method from entire traffic accident data, multiple discriminant analysis was applied. Also ordered logit model was applied for analyzing traffic accident severities using traffic accident severities as an independent variable and transportation facilities, road conditions and human characteristics as dependent variables. As results of the comparison between elderly and non elderly traffic accident, the traffic accident severity was affected by the age, types of traffic accidents, human characteristics and road conditions as well. Also, transportation facilities and road conditions affected to more elderly traffic accident than non elderly. Therefore, traffic accident severity would be decreased with the improvement of transportation facilities and road conditions for the elderly.

  • This study is to investigate the effects of driving anger and traffic congestion on drivers' behaviors. Driving anger is the propensity to become angry while driving, and people differ in the tendency to get angry when encountering frustration and provocation on the road. Individual differences of the propensity contribute to anger on the road and aggressive driving leading traffic vaiolations and accidents. In the experiment three traffic conditions (an open road condition, a bumper-to-bumper traffic condition and a being stuck behind a slower driver condition) were simulated and driving behaviors were collected with RTSA-DS(Road Traffic Safety Authority-Driving Simulator). The results were as follows: Most of high anger drives drove at higher speeds in an open road condition, and in the bumper-to-bumper condition they drove faster and had an higher crash rate, which suggests they did aggressive driving, and risky and unsafe behaviors.
