  • The operational modal analysis (OMA) technique, which extracts the modal parameters of a structural system using ambient vibrations, has been actively developed as a field of structural health monitoring of cable-supported bridges. In this paper, the short and long-term modal parameters of a cable-stayed bridge were evaluated using the acceleration data obtained from the two ambient vibration tests (AVTs) and three years of continuous measurements. A total of 27 vertical modes and 1 lateral mode in the range 0.1 ~ 2.5 Hz were extracted from the high-resolution AVTs which were conducted in the 6th and 19th years after its completion. Existing OMA methods such as Peak-Picking (PP), Eigensystem Realization Algorithm with Data Correlation (ERADC), Frequency Domain Decomposition (FDD) and Time Domain Decomposition (TDD) were applied for modal parameters extraction, and it was confirmed that there was no significant difference between the applied methods. From the correlation analysis between long-term natural frequencies and environmental factors, it was confirmed that temperature change is the dominant factor influencing natural frequency fluctuations. It was revealed that the decreased natural frequencies of the bridge were not due to changes in structural performance and integrity, but to the environmental effects caused by the temperature difference between the two AVTs. In addition, when the TDD technique is applied, the accuracy of extracted mode shapes is improved by adding a proposed algorithm that normalizes the sequence so that the autocorrelations at zero lag equal 1.

  • In this study, we built a thermal model for SNIPE 6U nano-satellite which has scientific mission for measuring science data in near Earth space environment and described thermal design based on the thermal model. And the validity of the thermal design was verified through the on-orbit thermal analysis. The thermal design was carried out mainly on the passive thermal control techniques such as surface finishes, insulators, and thermal conductors in consideration of the characteristics of the nano-satellite. However, the components with narrow operating temperature range and directly exposed to the orbital thermal environments, such as a battery and thrusters, are accomodated with heaters to satisfy the temperature requirements. On-orbit thermal analysis conditions are based on the basic orbital conditions of the satellite, and thermal analysis was performed for Normal mode, Launch & Early Orbit Phase (LEOP), Safehold mode, and Maneuver mode which are classified by the power consumption and the attitude of the satellite according to the mission scenario. The analysis results for each mode confirmed that every component satisfies the temperature requirement. In addition, the heater capacity and duty cycle of the battery and thruster were calculated through the analysis results of the Safehold mode.

  • In this study, a performance model of the smart UAV propulsion system with ducts, tip jets and variable main nozzle, which has flight capability of the rotary wing mode for the take-off/landing and low speed forward flight as well as the fixed wing mode for high speed forward flight, has been newly developed With the proposed model, steady-state performance analysis was performed at various flight modes such as rotary wing mode, fixed wing mode, compound ing mode and altitude as well as at flight speed conditions. In investigation of performance analysis. it was noted that the operational capability of the propulsion system was limited due to the duct losses depending on each flight mode, and the limitation with the altitude variation case had much greater than that with the flight speed variation case.

  • Tip-jet gyroplane is a type of compound helicopter that employs the tip-jet system to rotate the rotor by a reaction force from the gas jetted at the rotor tips in hovering. In forward flight, tip-jet gyroplane converts into a form of a gyroplane. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new conceptual design method to consider three flight modes: tip-jet mode, gyroplane mode, and transient mode. This study developed the numerical code of conceptual design methodology that can consider three flight modes. The developed code was validated against the available experiment data. Based on the developed code, initial sizing of tip-jet gyroplane was performed for two mission profiles including high speed forward flight of 150knots with a mission range of 300km or 400km. Subsequently, the configuration and performance of the 3,000lb tip-jet gyroplane were analyzed.

  • This paper presents an on-line finite element model updating method for in-service structures using measured data. Conventional updating methods, which are based on numerical optimization, are not efficient for on-line updating because they generally require repeated eigenvalue analyses until convergence criteria are met. The proposed method enables fully automated on-line finite element model updating, almost simultaneously with vibration measurement, without any user intervention or off-line procedures. The automated covariance-driven stochastic subspace identification (Cov-SSI) method is utilized to identify modal frequencies and vectors, and the identified modal data is fed to the neural network of the inverse eigenvalue function to produce the updated finite element model parameters. Numerical examples for a wind excited 20-story building structure shows that the proposed method can update the series of finite element model parameters automatically. It is also shown that sudden changes in the structural parameters can be detected and traced successfully.

  • Modern versions of supersonic jet fighter aircraft using a digital flight-by-wire flight control system design utilizes a control surface reconfiguration in order to guarantee the aircraft flight stability when a control surface is failed. The T-50 flight control laws are designed such that the surface reconfiguration mode controls the aircraft using non-failed control surfaces when one of the control surfaces is failed. In this paper, linear analysis and HQS(Handling Quality Simulator) pilot simulations are performed to analyze the flight stability and handling quality when the surface reconfiguration mode is engaged for aircraft landing configuration. It is found that the aircraft flight stability and handling quality is satisfied to level 1 requirements when the T-50 flight control law is changed to the surface reconfiguration mode.

  • Modern versions of supersonic jet fighter aircraft using digital flight-by-wire flight control system receive aircraft flight condition such as altitude, airspeed and AoA(angle of attack) from IMFP(Integrated Multi-Function Probe). IMFP sensors data have triplex structure using three IMFP sensors. An air data reconfiguration mode is applied to a T-50 flight control law to guarantee the aircraft flight stability when 2 or 3 IMFP sensors data are invalided. In this study, linear analysis and HQS(Handling Quality Simulator) pilot simulation are performed to analyze flight stability when the air data reconfiguration mode is applied to the control law. And we propose an example that the air data reconfiguration mode is applied to the control law due to second failure of IMFP during T-50 flight. It is found that the aircraft flight stability is not affected when the T-50 flight control law is changed to the air data reconfiguration mode.
