  • This study has developed a small solar powered UAV and performed its flight tests. In daylight, a solar powered UAV flies by using some of electricity generated from solar cells, and stores the remainder into battery. At night it flies by using electricity from battery. A solar powered UAV should have aerodynamically efficient configurations, light-weight, strong wing and fuselage. Its electric propulsion system and solar power system should also be very efficient. In the present study the solar powered UAV and its solar power system are developed for 12 hour continuous flight and the flight tests are performed to verify its performance. The flight tests performed in fall and winter to prove the present solar powered UAV is successful in four-season 12 hour flight.

  • Korea developed several satellites through government-led satellite development projects, and now operates earth observation satellites of various sensors, science and technology satellites, and communication satellites. Satellites can be utilized in many fields, and Satellite Information, Global Navigation Satellite System, Satellite Communications and Broadcasting, Space Solar Power System are typical application fields. Now that we have developed and operated several satellites, we have to concentrate more efforts on satellite application. In this paper, we reviewed the current states of the technologies of four satellite application fields mentioned above and analyzed the future prospects of them.

  • MPPT(Maximum power point tracking) is used in photovoltaic systems to maximize the solar array output power, irrespective of the temperature and irradiation conditions and of the load electrical characteristics. In this paper, new MPPT algorithm is proposed for the small satellite in LEO. As the proposed MPPT algorithm does not need any calculation of power by multiplication of voltage and current, it can be made by the simply analog circuit. In this study, the proposed MPPT algorithm is verified by the simulation and experimental in the many conditions that can change the characteristics of the solar array.
