Effect of the Groove Shape of Ultra Thick Box-Column with Center Segregation under High Heat Input for Corner Welding (중심 편석층이 있는 극후판 박스-칼럼의 대입열 코너이음 용접시 그루브 형상의 영향)

  • In this study, time-dependent distributions of temperature and stresses, in the box-column welded from ultra thick plates with center segregation, has been analyzed by the commercial finite element package SYSWELD+, for several types and angles of groove. The major points of investigation are the optimum type and angle of groove that minimize weld stress specially at the center segregation, as well as temperature distribution, residual stresses and changes in the mechanical properties. The results can be summarized as follows; 1) Generally the thermal cycle at the root of groove exhibits relatively rapid cooling pattern, however, most of the other part weldment have a slow cooling pattern in all groove types. 2) Most of the micro-structures of weldment are composed of ferrite and pearlite, meanwhile we could find martensite and bainite locally a the root of the groove. 3) Optimum groove type for high heat input welding of box-column corner is a double groove type, and the optimum angle for the groove is 30~$45^{\circ}$ that minimize deformation and weld stress at the center segregation.

A Study on Elevated Temperature Fracture Behavior of Cracks in 1Cr-0.5Mo Steel Weld (1Cr-0.5Mo강 용접부 균열의 고온파괴거동 연구)

  • Fracture behavior of ex-serviced 1Cr-0.5Mo steel was measured at room($24^{\circ}C$) and elevated($538^{\circ}C$) temperature and compared with that measured with virgin 1Cr-0.5Mo steel. Compact C(T) specimens were machined from the base and welded test materials. In case of the C(T) specimens of the weld, fatigue precrack was introduced along the fusion line so that following crack growth should occurs along the region of heat affected zone. It was observed that the J-R curve of the serviced material was significantly lower than that of the virgin material at room temperature. Brittle fracture was observed in the serviced material. On the other hand, at elevated temperature no noticeable difference was found between the J-R curves of the virgin and the serviced material. The measured J-R curves were also compared with those of the 1.25Cr-0.5Mo steel obtained from the other literatures. Optical microscopy and SEM examination of the serviced material reveal the carbide in/along the grain boundary which shows material degradation due to long-term usage. An example of application of the measured J-R curves is shown.

  • Penetrations of arc welding electrades are different by changing welding conditions, welding speed of travel and current, even though quite same ones. Changing status of penetration is studied by changing welding speed of travel keeping welding current constant, at first, and by changing welding current keeping welding speed of travel which was obtained prior experiment constant, afterward. The F-100 4mm $\phi$ rods, E4301 class, which covering substance is mainly ilmenite and a domestic representative product of this class electrode, are used for this experiment. The Marquette's No.130 5/32"(4mm)$\phi$ rods, E6011 class, and No. 140 5/32"(4mm)$\phi$, E6013 class, which were produced in the United Stated, are used to compare penetration with F-100 at same welding conditions. The covering substance of Marquette's No. 130 rods is mainly cellulose, and belong to deep penetration arc welding electrodes, the covering material of another rods is titania, and a kind f shallow penetration rods. The result of this study is as follow : penetration of F-100, domestic ilmentite covering electrade, E4301 class, is between E6011 and E6013 of the United States products. At the lower range of welding current, penetration is closer to E6013 than E6011, at the higher range, closer to E6011 than another; and the value of penetration ranges $1.65{\sim}2.70mm$ for 4mm$\phi$ rods in the adequate current range.   • Occurrence of hydrogen embrittlement could be one of the main obstacles for using structural equipment under hydrogen environment. It is required to develop assessment methods of hydrogen embrittlement for the metals used in production, storage, transmission and application utilities of hydrogen. The most probable method of hydrogen mass transmission is using existing natural gas pipeline. Base or weld part of the pipeline can be damaged by mixed gas of hydrogen in the pipeline. In this study small punch (SP) testing was employed to evaluate the hydrogen embrittlement behavior for a line pipe steel (API X65) with electrochemically hydrogen charged specimens. Results showed that the SP test can be a good candidate test method for hydrogen damage evaluation method. Strength of steel is known to be decreased with the level of hydrogen charging. However, for API X65 steel base metal need in this study, the effect of hydrogen to strength was not significant. It can be negligible regardless of the hydrogen contents in the steel. With this test different strength levels with various hydrogen charging conditions were observed. It can also be anticipated that more sensitive evaluation of material behavior be obtainable by the SP test method.

Numerical Analysis on the Structure Behavior of the Connected Long-span Beam during Excavation in Narrow Streets (도로 폭이 좁은 굴착공사에서 연결부가 적용되는 장지간 주형의 수치해석적 거동 평가)

  • This study evaluates the structural behavior of connected long-span beams applied for excavation in urban areas with a narrow street. Generally, the reliability of the connection is reduced owing to the defect of the upper flange in the connection. An improved connection part was developed to complement the defects in the connected long-span beam. A finite element analysis based on a commercial program, ABAQUS, was employed to evaluate the behavior of the improved connection part. A numerical analysis model was proposed to analyze the high-strength bolt connection and the composite behavior of steel and concrete applied to the improved connection. The suitability of the proposed numerical analysis was verified by comparing the experimental and numerical analysis results of the references. Using the proposed numerical analysis method, the improved and general connections were analyzed and compared with each other. The stress distribution and elastic-plastic behavior of the long-span beam were analyzed numerically. The analysis confirmed that 25% of the compressive stress was improved, resulting in the improvement of structural safety and performance.

Numerical Assessment of Tensile Strain Capacity for X80 Line Pipe Using GTN Model (GTN 모델을 이용한 X80 라인파이프의 인장 변형성능 해석)

  • This study presents a nonlinear finite element procedure involving a phenomenological model to validate the tensile strain capacity of the X80 line pipe developed for the strain-based design purpose. The procedure is based on the Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) model, which models nucleation, growth and coalescence of void volume fraction occurred inside a metal. In this study, the user-defined material module (UMAT) is implemented in the commercial finite element platform ABAQUS and is applied to the nonlinear damage analysis of steel specimens. Material parameters for the nonlinear damage analysis of base and weld metals are calibrated from numerical simulations for the tensile tests of round bar and full thickness specimens. They are then employed in the numerical simulations for SENT (Single Edge Notch Tension) test and CWPT (Curved Wide Plate Test) and in the simulations, the tensile strain capacities are naturally evaluated. Comparison of the numerical results with the experimental results and the conventional empirical formulae shows that the proposed numerical procedure can fairly well predict the tensile strain capacity of X80 line pipe. So, it is readily expected to be effectively applied to the strain-based design procedure.

Sensitivity Analysis of Nozzle Geometry Variables for Estimating Residual Stress in RPV CRDM Penetration Nozzle (원자로 상부헤드 관통노즐의 잔류응력 예측을 위한 노즐 형상 변수 민감도 연구)

  • Recently, several circumferential cracks were found in the control rod drive mechanism (CRDM) nozzles of U.S. nuclear power plants. According to the accident analyses, coolant leaks were caused by primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC). The tensile residual stresses caused by welding, corrosion sensitive materials, and boric acid solution cause PWSCC. Therefore, an exact estimation of the residual stress is important for reliable operation. In this study, finite element simulations were conducted to investigate the effects of the tube geometry (thickness and radius) on the residual stresses in a J-groove weld for different CRDM tube locations. Two different tube locations were considered (center-hole and steepest side hill tube), and the tube radius and thickness variables ($r_o/t$=2, 3, 4) included two different reference values ($r_o$=51.6, t=16.9mm).
