Engineering Properties of Concrete using of Coal Gasification Slag as the Fine Aggregates (석탄가스화 용융슬래그를 잔골재로 치환한 콘크리트의 공학적 특성)

  • This study analyzed the properties of concrete depending on the coal gasification slag(CGS) contents in order to examine the applicability of CGS as the fine aggregate for concrete. Experimental results, trended that the slump and slump flow increased with increasing CGS contents, and air contents has decreased. Evaluation index for segregation of normal strength concrete(EISN) is showed was good from CGS 25% when using crushed sand A(CSa) and CGS 50% when using mixed sand(MS). The compressive strength decreased with increasing CGS contents when CSa was used. However, when MS was used, the maximum value was CGS 50% due to parabolic tendency. Depending on fine aggregates type, compared with compressive strength of CSa was about 8% higher than that of MS, and depending on the use or unuse of CGS, more advantageous at higher strength than low strength. As a result of relative performance study on the quality of concrete according to the CGS contents, it is considered that CGS can be positively contributed to enhancement of workability and strength development when mixed with fine aggregate around 25~50%.

  • EAF dust generated from electric arc steelmaking process is classified as "hazardous" materials by tbe environmental regulation because of the existence of water leachable heavy metals such as Fe, Zn, Pb, and Cd. However, Fe and Zn among t the elements in the dust can be recovered to high valuable materials by applying a proper process. Therefore, in order to study t the possibility of recovery of iron from EAF dust, the effect oE carbon content and basicity, of synthesized EAF dust on the reduction rate of iron oxide was studied. Experimental results are as follows: TIle softening and melting temperature of the slag w was illcreased with increasing carbon addition amount [or carbon reduction eqUIvalent. At the carbon addition amount of 100% for carbon reduction equivalent and basicity of 1.7, reduction rate of $Fe_2O$ in the slag was the highest. The reaction order fur reduction of $Fe_2O$ by carbon was nearly first order.

  • The feasibility of clean technology to minimize the $CO_2$ emission by recycling and reuse the waste materials and energy have been studied for the cement industry. A life cycle assessment (LCA) was performed for an alternative raw material-supply method to use the molted slag as the major raw material in the cement clinker manufacturing. Using this new method, a 60% of $CO_2$ could be reduced that comes out during the decarboxylation from the cement rotary kiln. The energy-efficiency improvement and the alternative energy methods that had been determined in our previous study through the environmental assessment of cement industry were applied to the study for the reduction of $CO_2$ emission. The natural gas, one of the fossil fuels, was also used as the first choice to get the result at the earliest time by the most economic and the most efficient green technology and to switch into the carbon neutral energy consumption pattern.

  • 2010년 약 19.5 GWp 의 규모로 성장한 태양광 시장의 주요 소재는 실리콘을 이용한 태양전지이며, 고성능 및 고효율 태양전지 시장이 급성장 하였다. 이러한 고품질 태양전지에 사용되는 주요 원료인 9N 급 폴리실리콘은 2008년 4월 $265/kg 까지 상승하였으나, 점차 하향안정세에 있으며, 급속한 가격 경쟁을 통해 당분간 장기공급가가 50$/kg 이하로 하락할 것으로 전망된다. 이러한 실리콘 제조기술 중 가장 많이 사용되는 기술은 Trichloro-silane (TCS) 또는 Mono-silane (MS)를 사용하는 기상법인 일명 Siemens 공정이다. 이러한 기상법의 경우 12N 이상의 초고품질 실리콘 제조가 가능하나, 대규모의 설비투자(1억원/폴리실리콘 1톤)와 높은 에너지(120 kWh/kg)가 요구된다. 이에 최근 기상법이 아닌 야금학적인 정련법에 대한 기술이 개발되고 있으며, 이는 금속 실리콘을 슬래그 처리, 편석 분리, 응고 급랭, 전자빔, 플라즈마 등을 이용하여 정련하는 공정을 말한다. 야금학적 정련법은 순도 면에서 기상법에 비하여 낮은 단점이 있음에도 불구하고, 여러 장점들로 인해 활발히 연구되며 점차 실용화 되고 있는 매우 유용한 기술이다. 야금학적 정련법의 주요 장점은 기상법에 비해 약 25% 정도의 설비 투자비로 가능하고, 금속 실리콘을 직접 사용하며, 에너지 payback이 짧다. 또한, 산 및 염화실렌을 사용하지 않으므로 환경 문제를 적게 야기하고, 생산설비의 확장성도 매우 높다. 본 연구에서는 국내 규석광을 이용하여 일련의 정련 공정을 거쳐 고순도SG(Solar Grade)급 실리콘을 제조하고자 하였다. 실리콘 용융 환원로를 개발하고 순도를 높이기 위해 슬래그정련법을 이용하였으며, 생산된 3N 급의 금속 실리콘을 비기상법정련 방식인 일방향 응고와 플라즈마 정련 및 전자기유도 용해법을 이용하여 고순도의 실리콘을 제조하였다. 본 연구에서는 상업생산을 개시한 외국의 E사와 비교하여 산침출공정을 거치지 않으므로 실리콘회수율 및 환경부하 절감의 장점을 갖고 있으며 최종 순도 실리콘 6N 이상, 보론 함유량 0.2 ppm 이하를 달성하였으며, 기존 기상법 대비 약 20%의 전력 감소와 약 13%의 금속실리콘 원료 절감 효과가 있었다. 저가/고순도 SG급실리콘의 제조기술 개발은 향후 세계 태양광 시장에 대한 경쟁력을 확보하고, 시장 점유율 상승에 기여할 수 있으며, 산업 확대를 통한 주변 산업으로의 파급 효과가 매우 클 것으로 예상된다.

  • In this study, behaviors of removing Sb and Pb by oxidation of molten Bi-Pb-Sb alloy which is a by-product of non-ferrous smelting process was investigated. The molten alloy was oxidized at 1173 K by bubbling $N_2+O_2$ gas through a submerged nozzle. The Sb was removed and recovered as mixed phase of $Sb_2O_3$ and metal Sb. In the case of bubbling $N_2+O_2$ gas into molten Bi-Pb alloy at 923 K, Pb was oxidized and removed to slag. But Bi could not be refined due to simultaneous oxidization of Bi with Pb.

  • Melting is one of the most effective treatments for stabilizing heavy metals and also creates high value by-products. In this study, authors evaluated the leaching characteristics of heavy metals in melting slag obtained from incinerator ashes. In order to evaluate the environmental compatibility of the recycled melting slag, the samples analysed various leaching tests of heavy metals were raw incinerator ashes, melting slag and the construction materials recycled from melting slag. As the results: (1) The leaching concentrations of tile melting slag were lower than those of the raw incinerator ashes in the experiment performed in accordance with Korea Standard Leaching Test (KSLT). (2) The result of leaching test with the method of RG Min-StB 93. FGSV Forschungsgesellschaft fur Stra $\beta$ en- und Verkehrswesen) met the requirements in German. (3) The compressive strengths of mortar samples used for evaluating the feasibility of recycling the melting slag as construction materials also showed the suitable range for recycling (4) Melting slag was considered the stable materials with respect to the chemical stability against chemical solutions with various pH conditions.

Influence of Steel-making Process and Heat-treatment Temperature on the Fatigue and Fracture Properties of Pressure Vessel Steels (제강 및 열처리 조건이 압력용기강의 피로 및 파괴특성에 미치는 영향)

  • In this paper, high strength pressure vessel steels having the same chemical compositions were manufactured by the two different steel-making processes, such as vacuum degassing(VD) and electro-slag remelting(ESR) methods. After the steel-making process, they were normalized at $955^{\circ}C$, quenched at $843^{\circ}C$, and finally tempered at $550^{\circ}C$ or $450^{\circ}C$, resulting in tempered martensitic microstructures with different yielding strengths depending on the tempering conditions. Low-cycle fatigue(LCF) tests, fatigue crack growth rate(FCGR) tests, and fracture toughness tests were performed to investigate the fatigue and fracture behaviors of the pressure vessel steels. In contrast to very similar monotonic, LCF, and FCGR behaviors between VD and ESR steels, a quite difference was noticed in the fracture toughness. Fracture toughness of ESR steel was higher than that of VD steel, being attributed to the removal of impurities in steel-making process.

Mineral Properties of Molten Clinker with Blast Furnace Slag (고로 슬래그를 사용한 용융클링커의 광물학적 특성)

  • Raw mix of molten clinker was fabricated using blast furnace slag as starting material. Raw mix was melted at 1620$^{\circ}C$ for molten clinker fabrication. It was found that molten clinker contained alite and belite equivalent to OPC clinker mineral by optical microscope and SEM. The size of alite was 10~50 ${\mu}m$ and that of belite was 20~80 ${\mu}m$. This result thought to be attributed low $Al_2O_3$ content and cooling condition. Interstitial phase increased with blast furnace slag content and gehlenite was formed by the condition of LSF and SM. So raw mix with 27~41% blast furnace slag could be converted into cement clinker by appropriate choice of melting andcooling methods in this study.

Status of Pyrometallurgical Treatment Technology of EAF Dust (제강분진의 건식 처리기술 현황)

  • EAF (Electric arc furnace) dust is an important secondary resource such as zinc, lead, and iron. Recycling of EAF dust is benefit to solving disposal and environmental problems caused by the heavy metals entrained in the dust. In this study, pyrometallurgical treatment technology of EAF dust reviewed for the improvement of conventional process and development of new process. The existing technologies categorized into four groups: those by rotary kiln process, rotary hearth furnace (RHF) process, shaft type process, and reduction smelting process. The product of these processes are ZnO and Fe or slag as a waste. Their mechanisms for the production of ZnO from EAF dust were carbothermic reduction and oxidation of zinc gas with air.

Material Characteristics and Clay Source Interpretation of the Ancient Ceramic Artifacts from the Wonsinheungdong Site in Daejeon, Korea (대전 원신흥동 유적 출토 고대 세라믹 유물의 재료학적 특성과 원료의 산지해석)

  • This study was to identify the material characteristics and provenance of the crucibles, potteries and roof tiles from the Wonsinheungdong site in Daejeon, Korea. Similar mineral composition of each samples showed by microscopic observation and X-ray diffraction analysis. However, wall thickness and mineral characterization of each ceramic artifacts are quite different. The pottery is characterized by thin wall with 0.5 to 0.7 cm and fine grained clay matrix. While the crucible and roof tile has thick wall with 1.3 to 2.5 cm, poorly sorted texture of many quarz, orthoclase and plagioclase whithin ceramic fabric. And large elonagated voids formed by hydrocarbone of straw during the firing and loose matrix obseved in crucible. All ceramic samples and ground soil of the site show similar mineralogical characteristics geochemical behavior and clay-mineralization degree. This indicates making that the soil is probable to be a raw material of all ceramic from the Wonsinheungdong site. Also, firing temperature of most ceramic artifacts are estimated as 850 of all ceramic from the Wonsinheungdong site. Also, firing temperature of most ceramic artifacts are estimated as 850 to $950^{\circ}C$ but hardest pottery fired high temperature between 1,050 to $1,150^{\circ}C$. The vitreous molten materials interpreted in slag included segregation of copper and tin. But it can not exclude the possibility that the glass molten material because observed reddish and greenish vitreous fine structure under microscopic.
