  • A 33-year-old Korean woman, para 2, visited an obstetrics and gynecology clinic, Kumi-shi, Kyongsangbuk-do, due to postcoital spotting and flank pain. She had a tubal ligation 7 years before and demonstrated back pain during menstruation. She revealed a foul smelling discharge without complaint of itching. Enterobiw vermicularis eggs were demonstrated during microscopic examination of a smear taken from the posterior fornix of the vagina. On endoscopic examination of her vagina, a live worm was found in the posterior fornix. The worm was removed and identified as a female E. uemiculcris based on morphology. This is the first case report of vaginal enterobiasis in Korea.

  • An unusual over-gravid female of Enterobiw uemiculcris was recovered from a 15-month old child by cello-tape anal swab. The patient resided in Inchon and complained of severe anal itching. The worm measured 7.8 mm in length and 0.5 mm in width, and retained typical morphologic features of E. uemiculnris such as cephalic alas and a sharply pointed posterior end. In this gravid female, peculiarly. the uterus was tremendously distended, and about 99% of the whole body length was completely packed with a great number of eggs. Other internal organs were difficult to observe. This paper describes a peculiar over-gravid female of E. vemiculcyis.

  • In order to know the species and frequency of human parasitic infection diagnosed by biopsy, 149 cases (0.18%) of parasitic infection were reviewed, which were selected from 80,947 biopsied materials submitted for routine histopathological examination during a period of 10 years from 1980 to 1989 at Department of Pathology, Chonnam National University Hospital. They consisted of 112 cases of cysticercosis, 17 paragonimiasis, 7 clonorchiasis, 4 amebiasis, 1 sparganosis, 1 enterobiasis, 1 anisakiasis, and 1 fascioliasis respectively Based on morphological preservation of cysticercus, they could be divided into mild (20.2%), moderate (40.4%), and severe (39.4%) degeneration. Except 2 cases biopsied at the lungs, 15 cases of ectopic paragonimiasis were located at abdominal cavity (8 cases) and central nervous system (7 cases). One case of intrahepatic fascioliasis was observed. This is the 13th human fasciollasis reported in Korea. From the above results, the frequency of parasitic infections found in biopsied specimens was on the decrease as the year passed by, but biopsy is very useful diagnostic method on tissue parasites such as cystlcercosis and ectopic paragonimiasis.

  • To assess several chemotherapeutic schemes for control of enterobiasis, 738 children in five primary schools in Chunchon, Korea, were studied from May 1994 to June 1995. They were divided into 6 groups by the schemes: treatment of once or hice a year; treatment of positive cases or of whole class students; treatment with or without family members. The overall egg Positive rate before intervention was 17.5% out of 789 children. Treating all individuals in a class together with family members of positive cases brought better control efficacy than other schemes (P=0.000). However, when egg Positive rate is less than 30%, treating only egg Positive cases also can reduce egg Positive rate. The con- founding factors for the enterobiasis control in primary schoolchildren were new-comer to a class and familial infection.
