The activated carbon was produced from Sancheong bamboo by carbon dioxide gas activation methods. The carbonization of raw material was conducted at $900^{\circ}C$, and $CO_2$ activation reactions were conducted under various conditions: activation temperatures of $750-900^{\circ}C$, flow rates of carbon dioxide $5-30cm^3/g-char{\cdot}min$, and activation time of 2-5 h. The yield, adsorption capacity of iodine and methylene blue, specific surface area and pore size distribution of the prepared activated carbons were measured. The adsorption capacity of iodine (680.8-1450.1 mg/g) and methylene blue (23.5-220 mg/g) increased with increasing activation temperature and activation time. The adsorption capacity of iodine and methylene blue increased with the $CO_2$ gas quantity in the range of $5-18.9cm^3/g-char{\cdot}min$. But those decreased over those range due to the pore shrinkage. The specific volume of the mesopore and macropore of bamboo activated carbon were $0.65-0.91cm^3/g$. Because of this large specific volume, it can be used to the biological activated carbon process. Bamboo activated carbon phisically adsorbed the $CO_2$ of maximum 106 mg/g-A.C in the condition of 90% $CO_2$ and adsorption temperature of $20^{\circ}C$. The $CO_2$ adsorption ability of bamboo activated carbon was not changed in the 5 cyclic test of desorption and adsorption.
A polymer/iodine complex film was prepared using syndiotactic poly(vinyl alcohol) (s-PVA) with number-average degree of polymerization of 900 and syndiotactic diad content of 63.1%. In comparison with atactic-PVA/iodine films, degree of polarization of the s-PVA/iodine film was improved up to over 99% although a lower transmittance was obtained. By soaking in iodine/potassium iodide aqueous solution of a lower iodine concentration and subsequent drawing by 4 times, s-PVA/iodine film of a higher transmittance and degree of polarization was produced. The degree of iodine desorption of the s-PVA/iodine film in water were very low. The crystallinity and the d-spacing and crystal size of (100) plane increased at the early stage of soaking time, however, remained constant or decreased slightly with increasing soaking time. In consequence, s-PVA/iodine complex formation took place mainly inside crystal region at the initial stage of soaking time, whereas it occurred outside crystal region or physical adsorption of iodine dominated after sufficient soaking.

This study aimed to the adsorption-removal of high- radioactive iodide (I) contained in the initially generated high-radioactive seawater waste (HSW), with the use of AgX (Ag-impregnated X zeolite). Adsorption of I by AgX (hereafter denoted as AgX-I adsorption) was increased by increasing the Ag-impregnated concentration in AgX, and its concentration was suitable at about 30 wt%. Because of AgCl precipitation by chloride ions contained in seawater waste, the leaching yields of Ag from AgX (Ag-impregnated concentration : about 30~35 wt%) was less than those in distilled water (< 1 mg/L). AgX-I adsorption was above 99% in the initial iodide concentration ($C_i$) of 0.01~10 mg/L at m/V (ratio of weight of adsorbent to solution volume)=2.5 g/L. This shows that efficient removal of I is possible. AgX-I adsorption was found to be more effective in distilled water than in seawater waste, and the influence of solution temperature was insignificant. Ag-I adsorption was better described by a Freundlich isotherm rather than a Langmuir isotherm. AgX-I adsorption kinetics can be expressed by a pseudo-second order rate equation. The adsorption rate constants ($k_2$) decreased by increasing $C_i$, and conversely increased by increasing the ratio of m/V and the solution temperature. This time, the activation energy of AgX-I adsorption was about 6.3 kJ/mol. This suggests that AgX-I adsorption is dominated by physical adsorption with weaker bonds. The evaluation of thermodynamic parameters (a negative Gibbs free energy and a positive Enthalpy) indicates that AgX-I adsorption is a spontaneous reaction (forward reaction), and an endothermic reaction indicating that higher temperatures are favored.
Physicochemical properties and copper (II) adsorption ability of two oakwood and two pinewood charcoals, which were manufactured in traditional mode and commercialized in Korea, were examined pHs of these four wood charcoals were between 9.5 and 9.8. In the elemental contents of the wood charcoal, the contents of carbon atom (C) in the four samples were between 85-90%, while the content of hydrogen atom (H) in pinewood charcoal of the company 'S' was 1.62% and this value was three time higher than those of other samples. For iodine adsorption and specific surface area, the pinewood charcoal sample showed higher values than those of the oakwood charcoals. In the copper (II) ion adsorption in aqueous solution, the adsorption rate was increased by the increase of treated amounts of charcoal, treatment time, and pH.
The utilization of fly-ash containing high levels of the unburned carbon was investigated. In this study adsorbents were manufactured from fly-ash ad a raw material and the manufactured adsorbents were applied to the waste-water treatment including heavy metals. Varying the anthracite(Jangsung coal) content, three types of pellet were made. The carbon content of pellet increased appreciably upon the addition of anthracite. After carbonization and activation using the pellets, adsorbents showed following characteristics; the range of hardness was between 85% and 96%, iodine number was from 100 mg/g to 300 mg/g. In proportion to the anthracite addition, hardness and iodine number increased. Through the adsorption experiments of heavy metals, removal efficiencies of Pb and Cr by manufactured adsorbents were over 90%. In case of fly-ash, removal efficiencies of Pb and Cr were 31.5% and 5.6% respectively. The reason why removal capacities of manufactured adsorbents were higher than fly-ash was postulated that adsorption capability was improved by unburned carbon and $SiO_2$ which included in fly-ash during steam activation.

In this study, the effect of metal treatment on granular activated carbon (GAC) was investigated in the context of phenol adsorption. Cobalt(II) nitrate, and zinc(II) nitrate solution were used for metal treated. The specific surface area and the pore structure were evaluated from nitrogen adsorption data at 77 K. The phenol adsorption rates onto GAC were measured by UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Iodine adsorption capacity of Co-GAC is much better then that of the GAC. The Co-GAC with mesopore is more efficient than other adsorbents for the adsorption of polymer such as methyleneblue. The adsorption capacity of reference-GAC and metal-GAC were increased in order of Co-GAC>Zn-GAC>Reference-GAC, in spite of a decrease in specific surface area which was resulted from pore blocking by metal.
The typical removal method of volatile organic compounds is adsorption process. In this study, granular activated carbon and activated carbon fiber were used as adsorbents, and the adsorption behavior for the two types of adsorbent was compared. And they were regenerated by supercritical carbon dioxide extraction at a constant temperature, 318.15 K, and 2000, 2500, 3000 psi respectively. The desorption percentage of initial adsorbates and iodine values were increased with pressure of supercritical carbon dioxide. The regeneration time was 70 and 60 minutes in adsorbents loaded with methyl ethyl ketone(MEK) and benzene, respectively. The desorption percentages were 64.0% for granular activated carbon and 55.3% for activated carbon fiber loaded with MEK, and 59.1% for granular activated carbon and 45.2% for activated carbon fiber loaded with benzene. The exit concentration could be evaluated by Tan and Liou model. Therefore, the granular activated carbon and the activated carbon fiber could be regenerated by supercritical fluid extraction process.
In this study, two kinds of activated carbon fibers were prepared from PAN-based stabilized fibers by physical activation with steam. The variations in specific surface area, amount of iodine adsorption and pore size distribution of the activated carbon fibers after the activation process were discussed. The activated carbon fibers were prepared by two different methods, namely a 1- and 2-step method. For the 2-step method, carbonization of fibers in $N_2$ atmosphere was carried out to make carbon fibers and then activated by steam. In normal two step steam activation, BET surface area of about $1019m^2/g$ was obtained in the study. In the 1-step steam activation process, the carbonization and activation were simultaneously carried out. In the one step steam activation, BET surface area of $1635m^2/g$ was obtained after heat-treatment at $990^{\circ}C$. However, nitrogen adsorption isotherms for oxidized PAN based activated carbon fibers that were prepared by both methods were type I in the Brunauer-Deming-Deming-Teller (BDDT) classification even though they have different BET surface areas, amounts of iodine adsorption and pore size distributions.

The purposes of this study are to treat sewage sludge that has increasingly become an issue and to recycle it as the adsorbent. The adsorbent was produced by carbonization and simultaneous steam activation, and its characteristics were studied. Parametric screening studies were carried out for the preparation of good adsorbent. Optimum operating conditions were confirmed as input carbonization-activated temperature of $840^{\circ}C$, feed steam flow rate of 70 g/min, carbonization-activated time of 30 min and feed dried sludge of 10.8 kg/day, respectively. At this time, the iodine adsorptivity was maximized as 328.1 mg/g. Pore development, structure, element compound and content were confirmed by using nanoPOROSITY, SEM (Scanning electron microscope), and EDS (Energy dispersive spectroscopy). Through this result, it was known that the adsorbent derived from sewage sludge could be used for the treatment of leachate in a landfill, VOCs (Volatile organic compounds), and so on.

Properties of wood charcoal made from the domestic wood species at $300-900^{\circ}C$ have investigated to understand the correlation between carbonization temperature and chemical and physical characteristics of wood charcoal. In terms of charcoal yield at particular carbonization temperatures, it was drastically decreased until the temperature reaches up to $600^{\circ}C$ and the decrease ratio of yield was reduced at higher temperatures. As the carbonization temperature increased, pH of the wood charcoal increased so that it became basic at last. The wood charcoal prepared at $600{\sim}700^{\circ}C$ showed the highest caloric value and those of wood charcoals made at higher temperature became plateau at a little lower level than the peak. The caloric value of Japanese larch charcoal was a bit higher than that of Red oak charcoal. The carbon content in the wood charcoal was increased as the carbonization temperature increased, whereas the hydrogen content was decreased. Specific surface area of the wood charcoal became larger with increase in temperature up to $600^{\circ}C$ but it was decreased or reduced in the increasing ratio after, and then it rose again at higher temperature than $800^{\circ}C$. Absorption capacity of the wood charcoal against iodine and gaseous acetic acid became greater as the carbonization temperature increased. Japanese larch charcoal presented higher absorption capacity than Red oak charcoal. As the above results, it is revealed that carbonization temperature affects the chemical and physical properties of wood charcoal. Therefore, to use wood charcoal with maximum effect it should be prepared at optimum temperature for proper use.
