  • Seismic performance evaluation of structure requires an estimation of the structural performance in terms of displacement demand imposed by earthquakes on the structure. Incremental Dynamic Analysis(IDA) is a analysis method that has recently emerged to estimate structural performance under earthquakes. This method can obtained the entire range of structural performance from the linear elastic stage to yielding and finally collapse by subjecting the structure to increasing levels of ground acceleration. Most structures are expected to deform beyond the limit of linearly elastic behavior when subjected to strong ground motion. The nonlinear response history analysis(NRHA) among various nonlinear analysis methods is the most accurate to compute seismic performance of structures, but it is time-consuming and necessitate more efforts. The nonlinear approximate methods, which is more practical and reliable tools for predicting seismic behavior of structures, are extensively studied. The uncoupled modal response history analysis(UMRHA) is a method which can find the nonlinear reponse of the structures for ESDF from the pushover curve using NRHA or response spectrum. The direct spectrum analysis(DSA) is approximate nonlinear method to evaluate nonlinear response of structures, without iterative computations, given by the structural linear vibration period and yield strength from the pushover analysis. In this study, the practicality and the reliability of seismic performance of approximate nonlinear methods for incremental dynamic analysis of mixed building structures are to be compared.

  • A procedure for determination of performance point was developed based on the concept of the direct displacement-based design method. Using the proposed procedure, parametric study has been performed for various natural periods of the structure, yield strength, and the stiffness after the first yield. The proposed method was also applied to a 10-story steel frame, and the results were compared to those from the capacity spectrum method and the time history analysis. It was found from the comparison that there were good agreement between the results.

  • Recently the necessity of time history analyses is increasing for the seismic analyses of a structure, and the seismic design provisions of IBC2003, ASCE and KBC2005 require the use of a minimum of seven earthquake records for the time history analyses. Earthquake records for the time history analyses could be selected from the database of the field-measured earthquake records having similar site conditions with the designed site, or from simulated sites satisfying the design spectrum. However, in this study seven earthquake records were generated using 50 earthquake records, classified as records measured at the rock, in the database of the Pacific Earthquake Research Center (PEER). Seven earthquake records were first selected by the least squares fitting method comparing the scaling factored response spectra with the specified design spectrum, and a family of seven artificial time history earthquake records was ultimately generated by multiplying scaling factors, which were calculated by the least squares fitting method and the SRSS averaging method, to the corresponding selected earthquake records.

  • In recent years, time history analysis has been the method generally used for the seismic analysis of tall buildings with damping devices. When T is the natural period of the first vibration mode of the structure, the sum of the spectral acceleration of the earthquake ground motion is usually adjusted to that of the design response spectrum in the period ranging from 0.2T to 1.5T to meet the requirements of design code. However, when the ground motion is scaled according to the design code, the differences in the responses obtained by response spectrum analysis (RSA) and time history analysis (THA) of the structures increase as the natural period of the structure becomes longer. When time history analysis is performed by using ground accelerations that are scaled according to the design code, base shear is similar to that obtained from RSA, but other responses, such as displacements, drifts and member forces, are underestimated compared to RSA. If these results are adjusted by multiplying with the scale-up factor, the scaled responses become much smaller. Therefore, a scaling method of ground motions corresponding with the design code is proposed in this study, as a way of assisting structural engineers in generating artificial ground motions.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the status and perceptions, needs of speech language pathologists(SLPs) for the intervention of non-verbal autism spectrum disorders(ASD) through a survey. Among SLPs registered in the Korean Association of Speech-Language Pathologists (KSLP), 116 SLPs participated in this survey. The result is as follows. First, 96.6% of SLP reported that they had been referred for non-verbal ASD, and it was found that SELSI was the most used evaluation tool, and communication ability and social interaction were the most frequently used intervention goals. Second, 86.2% of the SLP said that speech therapy had difficulties, and the reason for the burden was the lack of speech therapy methods. Also, the level of knowledge of speech therapy for non-verbal ASD was low in the treatment area, and the level of confidence responded positively only in communication ability and social interaction. Third, education that was considered necessary within the curriculum was education on treatment methods, and it was found that the improvement points of education other than regular courses were increased education such as expert courses and workshops and activation of supervision. From the results of this study, it is expected that the related curriculum will be expanded and improved in the future.

  • The purpose of this study is to discuss how strength and ductility of each system in low-rise reinforced concrete buildings composed of extremely brittle, shear and flexural failure lateral-load resisting systems have influence on seismic capacities of the overall system, which is based on nonlinear seismic response analyses of single-degree-of-freedom structural systems. In order to simulate the triple lateral-load resisting system, structures are idealized as a parallel combination of two modified origin-oriented hysteretic models and a degrading trilinear hysteretic model that fail primarily in extremely brittle, shear and flexure, respectively. Stiffness properties of three models are varied in terms of story shear coefficients, and structures are subjected to various ground motion components. By analyzing these systems, interaction curves of demand strengths of the triple system for various levels of ductility factors are finally derived for practical purposes. The result indicates that demand strength levels derived can be used as a basic information for seismic evaluation and design criteria of low-rise reinforced concrete buildings having the triple lateral-load resisting system.

  • The actual hysteretic behavior of structural elements and systems is smooth. Smooth hysteretic behavior is more representative of actual behavior than bi-linear or piece-wise linear stiffness degrading models. The strength reduction factor in seismic design is used to reduce the elastic strength demand to design levels. In this study, the effect of smoothness on the strength reduction factor is evaluated for several smooth hysteretic systems subjected to near-fault and far-fault earthquakes. For design purposes, a simple expression of the strength reduction factor considering hysteretic smoothness and earthquake characteristics, represented as near-fault and far-fault earthquakes, is proposed. The strength reduction factors calculated by the proposed simple formulation are more similar to the factors directly obtained from inelastic response spectrum analyses than those calculated by several existing formulas.

  • Most structures are expected to deform beyond the limit of linearly elastic behavior when subjected to strong ground motion. Seismic evaluation of structure requires an estimation of the structural performance in terms of displacement demand imposed by earthquakes on the structure. Among them, the capacity spectrum method(CSM) is conceptually simple, but the iterative procedure is time-consuming and may sometimes lead to no solution or multiple solutions. This paper considers a nonlinear direct spectrum method(NDSM) to evaluate seismic performance of mixed building structures without iterative computations, given dynamic property T from stiffness skeleton curve and nonlinear pseudo acceleration $A_{y}$/g and/or ductility ratio $\mu$ from response spectrum. The nonlinear response history analysis has been performed and analyzed with various earthquakes for estimation of reliability and practicality of NDSM with mixed building structures.

  • Because of a new seismic design code has been enacted in 2023, there is a need to evaluate whether the road tunnels in operation satisfies the requirements of the new code. Four tunnels that are considered to be most susceptible to damage. Time history analyses are performed to quantify their seismic performances. The input ground motions generated to fit both 2007 and 2023 codes are used to evaluate the effect of the motions on the calculated responses. The analyses show that all tunnels perform favorably and satisfies the requirements successfully. Therefore, retrofit or reinforcement are deemed as unnecessary.

  • Unbond brace hysteretic dampers are generally used to prevent or decrease structural damage in building structures subjected to strong earthquake by its energy dissipating hysteretic behavior. In the study, a straightforward design procedure for unbond brace hysteretic dampers was developed. The required amount of equivalent damping to satisfy given performance acceptance criteria was obtained conveniently based on the capacity spectrum method without carrying out time-consuming nonlinear dynamic time history analysis. Then the size of the unbond braces is determined from the required equivalent damping. Parametric study has been performed for the design variables such as natural period, yield strength, the stiffness after the first yield stress of the unbond brace. The procedure was applied to 5-story and 10-story steel frames for verification of the proposed method. According to the earthquake time history analysis results, the maximum displacement of the model structure with unbond braces supplied in accordance with the proposed method corresponds well with the given target displacement.
