  • In this study, the optimal strengthening by micro genetic algorithm(${\mu}$-GA) method is proposed for improvement of load-carrying capacity of RC hollow slab bridges using external prestressing. The Qeen-post type and King-post type are considered for the optimal strengthening. The type for optimal strengthening, deviator, areas of tendons and the number of anchor are calculated by ${\mu}$-GA. The objective function is constituted with dimensionless cost of tendon and steel for optimal strengthening. The constraints are formulated by design specification for bridges and anchors. The validity of this study is presented by analysis of the results after the optimal strengthening of the RC hollow slab bridge.

  • Large portion of the domestic bridges are slab bridges reflecting the geographical characteristic of the country, where exists lots of inclines and small winding brooks. Many of the slab bridges are damaged and superannuated as they become obsolete. Deterioration is accelerated when the traffic density becomes large and heavy vehicles pass frequently. A strengthening method for deteriorated slab bridges was studied in this work. The examined net-type strengthening method uses both longitudinal and transverse prestressing for strengthening. In this way, the deflection at the center of the slab can be better controlled, and consequently, the slab is more efficiently strengthened. Three slab specimens were fabricated for the experimental test and subjected to three different loading conditions, and the load bearing capacities and deflections of slabs were examined. Flexural stiffness of slabs increased by 30.7~107.3%, and deflection of slabs decreased by 27.6~52.2% after net-type strengthening. The net-type prestressing is efficient to the strengthening for the center of a slab, and its efficiency is also valid under eccentric loadings. Since extra prestress forces can be added in the future, if necessary, the net-type strengthening system is advantagous for the maintenance and repair of slab bridges.

  • In recent years, FRP plates have been studied for flexural reinforcement of RC structures due to easy installation and good Quality control. This study presents experimental field test results for the effectiveness of flexural reinforcement of the RC slab using external prestressing with thin CFRP strips made by the pultrusion process. It was demonstrated that flexural strength was considerably increased with relatively easy installation when compared to the other methods used for the composite reinforcement.

  • Recently, the external prestressing method is being much frequently used in strengthening reinforced concrete structures because of it's excellent load resistance and serviceability increases comparing to other strengthening methods. However, it is true that the research on fatigue performance of concrete structures strengthened by the external prestressing using FRP tendons is rare. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and feasibility of the external prestressing method by analyzing the characteristics of the reinforced concrete beam strengthening using FRP tendons under repeated loads. Test variables adopted in this experimental study are the types of external prestressing material (steel or FRP tendon) and the repeated load ranges. The repeated load range have the minimum 50% of yield load of reinforced concrete beam and the maximum 70-85%. The test beams are loaded by 4 point loadings with 3 Hz sine wave. From this experimental study, it is confirmed that the reinforced concrete beams strengthened using FRP tendons have sufficient safety against fatigue, especially in FRP tendon itself, tendon at deviators and tendon at anchorages.

  • Steel fiber is a effective composite for crack resistance and improve structural performance under tensile loading. This study presents an evaluation of crack resistance and structural performance in cement mortar with steel fiber and expansion agent through internal chemical prestressing. For this work, cement mortar samples with 10% replacement of cement binder with CSA (Calcium-Sulfo-Aluminate) expansion agent and 1% volume ratio of steel fiber are prepared. Including basic mechanical properties, initial cracking load and fracture energy are evaluated in cement mortar beam with notch. Initial cracking load and fracture energy in cement mortar with CSA and steel fiber increase by 1.75 and 1.41~1.53 times compared with those in cement mortar with steel fiber. With optimum mix design for steel fiber and CSA expansive agent, the composite with chemical prestressing can be applied to various members and effectively improve crack resistance to external loading.

  • Recently, prestressed H-Beam bridges with external unbonded Tendons are increasingly built. The mechanical behavior of prestressed steel H-beams is different from that of normal bonded PSC beams in a point of the slip of tendons at deviators and the change of tendon eccentricity that occurs, when service load are applied in external unbonded steel H-beams. The concept of prestressing steel structures has been widely considered, in spite of long and successful history of prestressing concrete members. In the study, The flexural test on prestressed steel H-beams has been performed in the various aspects of prestressed H-beam including the tendon type and profile. The load was plotted against the deflection and the strain respectively in the steel beam and prestressing bars. The value expected with the equation of internal force equilibrium and compatibility between the deflection of the bars and the H-beam was found to correlate well with the measured data.

  • This paper introduces a remained tensile force estimation method using SI technique based on evolutionary algorithm for externally prestressed tendon. This paper applies the differential evolutionary scheme to SI technique. A virtual model test using ABAQUS 3 dimensional frame model has been made for this work The virtual model is added to the tensile force(28.5kN). Two set of frequencies are extracted respectively from the virtual test and the self-coding FEM 2 dimension model. The estimating tendon tension for the FEM model is 28.31kN. It is that the error in the tendon tension is 1% through the differential evolutionary algorithm. The errors between virtual model and the self-coding FEM model are assumed as the model error.

  • Bridges are deteriorating over service life due to over weight vehicles, environmental conditions and so on. In addition to that, those could be classified into low level bridges which are not fit for highway because of upgrade of the design load. Consequently, such reasons impel the bridges to be repaired or strengthened. Among the rehabilitating methods, FRP sheets and externally prestressing methods are preferred recently. This paper presents experimental results about the behavior of PSC beams strengthened by external tendons and CFRP sheets.

  • Carbon fiber reinforced polymer(CFRP) have superior mechanical and chemical properties in comparison with conventional materials. And post-tensioning method has been used for structural reinforcement of RC structures due to easy installation and good effect of resisting capacity of structures. But the higher cost of CFRP and the loss of prestressing force with time are considered the major problems to use it. In this study, CFRP Strips and external post tensioning for rehabilitation of old concrete structures were adapted and optimal combination of these methods is considered. A total of 17 concrete members were made and tested. The types and numbers of CFRP strips and post-tensioning types were selected as major test variables. From test results, it is shown that the concrete members that post tensioned and bonded CFRP strips has a pronounced effect on the strength and deformational behavior. This present study indicates that external temporally post tensioning can reduce the amount of CFRP strips required and the combination of temporally post tensioning and CFRP strips may meet the strength and ductility requirements of old structures.

  • This paper presents an analytical prediction of Nonlinear characteristics of prestressed concrete bridges by strengthened of externally tendon considering construction sequence, using unbonded tendon element and beam-column element based on flexibility method. Unbonded tendon model can represent unbounded tendon behavior in concrete of PSC structures and it can deal with the prestressing transfer of posttensioned structures and calculate prestressed concrete structures more efficiently. This tendon model made up the several nodes and segment, therefore a real tendon of same geometry in the prestressed concrete structure can be simulated the one element. The beam-column element was developed with reinforced concrete material nonlinearities which are based on the smeared crack concept. The fiber hysteresis rule of beam-column element is derived from the uniaxial constitutive relations of concrete and reinforcing steel fibers. The formulation of beam-column element is based on flexibility. Beam-column element and unbonded tendon element were be involved in A computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), that were used the analysis of RC and PSC structures. The proposed numerical method for prestressed concrete structures by strengthened of externally tendon is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.
