  • Partial nucleotide sequences of nuclear protein-coding recombination activating gene 1 (RAG1) gene of two Abbottina and five Microphysogobio species residing in Korea were analyzed to elucidate the molecular phylogenetic position of A. springeri Banarescu and Nalbant. In RAG1 tree A. rivularis was clearly separated from the monophyletic lineage composed of A. springeri, Biwia zezera and Microphysogobio species. Within this lineage B. zezera showed sister-group relationship to the monophyletic group composed of A. springeri and five Microphysogobio species. Thus, our phylogenetic tree revealed the polyphyletic nature of two Abbottina species from Korea, which result is well congruent with the previous phyletic assumption based on osteological features. The current classification of Abbottina and Microphysogobio based on morphological criteria, such as the presence or absence of papillae on lips and size of swim bladder with or without encapsulation, does not reflect their true evolutionary history.

  • This study was carried out to clarify the egg, larvae and juveniles development of Abbottina springeri. For the experiments, the matured adults were collected at the Seowon-cheon, Dangjin-si, Chungcheongnam-do, in Korea. The amount of spawning of female A. springeri was about 1,225~2,100 (1,662±437, n=10). The fertilized eggs were circular in shape and 1.05~1.13 (1.08±0.02, n=30) mm in diameter. The hatching time was required 72 hours to 80 hours after fertilization under water temperature of 22℃. The newly hatched larvae were 2.10~2.23 (2.16±0.04, n=10) mm in total length and had egg yolk in the abdomen but the mouth was not opened. At 5 days after hatching, the preflexion larvae were 3.19~3.30 (3.24±0.03, n=10) mm in total length and the most of yolk-sac was absorbed. At the 15 days after hatching, the flexion larvae were 4.97~5.30 (5.13±0.12, n=10) mm in total length and the tip of the caudal fin was began to bend upward. At the 25 days after hatching, the postflexion larvae were 8.97~9.60 (9.44±0.16, n=10) mm in total length and the tip of the caudal fin was bent at 45°. At the 35 days after hatching, the juvenile were 12.0~13.5 (12.7±0.53, n=10) mm in total length and all fin-rays (iii7 dorsal fin, iii6 anal fin, i7 ventral fins) were reached a constant number of each part.

  • Population ecology of Abbottina springeri has been investigated from March to November, 1995 at Musimchon stream of Kadok-myon, Chongwon-gun, Chungchongbug-do. The favorite habitat was a sluggish area with muddy bottom, but larger individuals more than 60 mm in total length were also collected at rapids of low velosity. Judging from the total length frequency in this population on June, total length 30~50 mm group is one year old, 50~65 mm group is two years old, and longer than 65 mm is regarded over three years old. Sexual dimorphism was revealed conspicuously in genital papilla, nuptial tuberles and nuptial pigmentation in the males at spawning season. Peak season of spawning was June when the water temperature reaches $20\sim25^{\circ}C$ and they start spawning at the age of two. The sex ratio of female to male was 1:0.93. The mean of egg number and egg size in ovary were 652 and 0.43~0.06 mm respectively. According to the contents of stomach, this species feeds mainly on botton algae at all ages and some aquatic insects in adult.

  • Community structures of fish in six small eutrophied lakes, located in Gyeonggi province, Korea were investigated from September 2003 to August 2004. Total number of fish species was 33 species of 13 families in which five Korean endemic species such as Rhodeus uyekii, Squalidus gracilis majimae, Abbottina springeri, Iksookimia koreensis, and Odontobutis interrupta were found. Dominant species in the lakes was Hemiculter leucisculus. Both Zacco platypus and Pseudorasbora parva were numberous as subdominant species. In particlilar, Micropercops swinhonis known as partly distributed in the Jeonlabukdo was first recorded in Lake Wangsong and Heungbu which are located in the Gyeonggi province. In lake Myukwoo, Wangsong, and Heungbu, the proportion of Pelagic and omnivorous fish were high, reflecting that fish habitat is poor. A CPUE based fish production was the lowest in Lake Geumgwang of which lake is relatively favorable, whereas it was higher in eutriphied lakes suchs as Dukwoo, Myukwoo and Heungbu lakes.

  • This study surveyed the central mountain area of Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) from March to October 2018 to reveal the appearance patterns of freshwater fish. We collected 7,744 individuals of 43 species in 12 families with skimming nets and cast nets in 12 stations during the survey. The dominant species was Zacco koreanus (30.3%), and the subdominant species was Z. platypus (18.5%), followed by Rhynchocypris oxycephalus (10.0%), R. steindachneri (6.7%), Microphysogobio yaluensis (5.9%), Acheilognathus signifer (4.5%), Pungtungia herzi (4.2%), and Orthrias nudus (2.6%). Among the collected species, four were legally protected. They included Hemibarbus mylodon, which was a natural monument, and Lethenteron reissneri, A. signifer, and Pseudopungtungia tenuicorpa, which were class II endangered wildlife designated by the Ministry of Environment. Twenty Korean endemic species (46.5%) and one exotic species, Micropterus salmoides, were also collected. Additionally, three climate-change sensitive species, R. kumgangensis, Ladislavia taczanowskii, and Cottus koreanus, and three landlocked species, L. reissneri, C. koreanus, and Rhinogobius brunneus appeared. The dominant species in each station were Z. koreanus (15 stations), Z. platypus (four stations), R. oxycephalus (four stations), and C. koreanus (one station). The species dominance index decreased from upstream to downstream (mainstream of Gimhwanamdae Stream), while the species diversity index and the species richness index increased. The community structure of the rivers was divided into the uppermost stream, upper stream, Han River, and Imjin River. Compared to antecedent surveys, this study collected the highest number of species. Two new species (Sarcocheilichthys variegatus wakiyae and Micropterus salmoides) were caught, while six species (Siniperca scherzeri, Leiocassis ussuriensis, Brachymystax lenok tsinlingensis, Rhodeus ocellatus, Abbottina springeri, Aphyocypris chinensis) did not appear. Gimhwanamdaecheon Stream has high biological value with the inhabitation of many species, including species under legal protection and high diversity and richness index scores. This paper also discussed a protection plan for this area.
