  • The author made a special review on/red-tides from the following points: definition, terms, yearly progress of researches, causative organisms, searching the causes, toxins, a loss of lives, damages of aquatic products, reducing aquacultural damages and removal efficiency. Red-tides in Korea were caused by diatoms in the early 1960’s, in the end of 1970’s it was caused by non-toxic dinoflagellates when marine pollutions were growing more and more serious. In the end of 1980’s, red-tides were caused by toxic dinoflagellates. Red-tide was only found in selected areas at first, but recently large-scaled red-tides are frequently found in the southern coastal waters of Korea, causing huge losses of marine life. A plan is greatly needed to reduce the damaging red-tides, and removal systems need to be developed.

  • The causative organism of red tied occurred mainly in embayments along southern coast of Korea mostly composes of dinoflagellate species. Among them Genus Prorocentrum is predominant in Masan Bay and it has already reported eight Prorocentrum species from this area. The authors have identified five species of Genus Prorocentrum during the year of 1982 in the surveyed area and each species was described by means of the observation with light microscope as well as scanning electron microscopy. An additional species, p.dentatum is new to Korean waters.

  • We investigated the characteristics of the thermohaline structure and phytoplankton community from the southwestern areas of Jeju to the nothern areas of Taiwan in the Ease China Sea, in June 2004. According to the analysis of a T-S diagram, three characteristic of water masses were identified. We classified them into the mixed water mass by the Chiness continental coastal waters and Yellow Sea cold water (Region A), Chinese continental coastal waters (Region B) and Taiwan warm current (Region C). Region A was characterized by low temperature, low salinity, high density and high Chl-a concentration. Region B was characterized by high temperature, low salinity, low density and high Chl-a and Region C was characterized high temperature, high salinity, low density and low Chl-a concentration. The phytoplankton community identified a total of 56 species belonging to 31 genera. The dominant species was mainly dinoflagellates, Gymnodinium breve, Scrippsiella trochoidea, Ceratium fusus, Prororcentrum triestinum, centric diatoms, Chaetoceros lorenzianus, Leptocylindrus danicus, Proboscia alata, Skeletonema costatum and pennate diatoms, Pseudonitzschia pungens, Cylidrotheca closterium. Standing crops of phytoplakton fluctuated between $0.1{\times}10^2$ cells/L and $5.7{\times}10^4$ cells/L by dominance of dinoflagellates. In the phytoplankton community, the Region A was characterized by the various species composition in 39 species, the dominint species with di-atomes, Pn. pungen, Ch. lorenzianus and standing crops from 6.9 cells/$m\ell$ to 56.6 cells/$m\ell$, Region B by the various species composition in 37 species, the dominant species with dinoflagellates, G.breve, S. trochoidea and standing crops from 4.6 cells/$m\ell$ to 26.7 cells/$m\ell$, and the Region C by low species number with 28 species, the dominant species with one dinoflagellate, S.trochoidea and one diatom, L.danicus and very low standing crops from 0.1 cells/$m\ell$ to 5.7 cells/$m\ell$. Phytoplankton productivity in the East China Sea was controlled by Chinese continental coastal waters which include a high concentrations of nutrients.

  • Dynamics of phytoplankton community were monthly examined at two sites in Lake Juam from January to December 2003. One site is located near the Dam, an intake tower, where obtain a drinking water resource, the other site is located in the shallow region, Mundeok-bridge, the upstream or effluent part of lake. During the study, there made little the differences in physicochemical factors between two sites, but numbers of species and standing crops of phytoplankton differ remarkably. Totally, 41% of green algae and 35.8% of diatoms were comprised of total phytoplankton species, while 46.3% of dinoflagellates and 27.6% of cyanobacteria contributed in total standing crops of Phytoplankton community. Cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginora and diatom Fragilaria crotonensis dominated the Dam site during a warm season, while dinoflagellates Peridinium bipes and Asterionella formosa were at the shallow region during a cold season, respectively. According to the CCA analysis, dissolved oxygen, chemical oxygen demand and total phosphate strongly affected the growth of P. bipes with low water temperature. In addition, the increment of total nitrogen and water temperature affected biomass of a cyanobacterium M. aeruginosa. Collectively, it may suggest that the majority of annual primary production of Lake Juam is covered by two dominant species Peridinium bipes in cold season and Microcystis aeruginosa in warm season.
