  • Untypical unstable burning with very low frequency was observed at firing test of a gas generator using bundle cylindrical grain. The pressure unbalance between inside and outside of cylindrical grain brought such a low unstable burning. The grains were radially holed so that the high pressure gas inside of grain could quickly moved outward of gain, resulting dissipation of the pressure unbalance However too many holes were required to let the burning be stable for all operation regime from low to high temperature of grain and resultantly deteriorate the Progressive increase of gas amount produced by a gas generator. So another idea using grids located both sides of a bundle grain was applied to dissipate actively large vorticities enhanced by unbalance pressure distribution in a combustor. Finally stable burning with progressively increase of gas was established by application of 5${\times}$5 grid slightly away bundle grain to move bundle gain freely in case pressure unbalance were occurred inside of combustor.

  • This study analyzes the flow characteristics and sponge ball recovery performance in a ball strainer according to vortex promoter design variables through flow-particle analysis based on actual experiments to derive a method for improving the recovery rate of cleaning sponge balls of CTCS applied to existing power plants. Based on the ball strainer in CTCS used in the power plant, the experiment was conducted by changing the design factor of the improved shape. In addition, flow and particle analysis were performed under the same conditions as the experiment to numerically the flow characteristics and recovery rate in the ball strainer according to the design factor of the vortex promoter. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that the recovery performance was improved by about 3% by changing the design height of the Vortex promoter. And when comparing the difference between maximum and minimum recovery rate, it was found that the effect on the recovery performance increased slightly according to the distance condition compared to the vortex promoter design height condition.

  • In this study, the characteristic of fluid flow in the new type lung assist devices has been established using computational fluid dynamics(CFD). For the modeling, the hollow fiber was ignored, and vertical types and tangential types were used for the model. Which was to analyze the flow characteristics of the fluid flow model when there exists 1 and 2 input/output ports, and when the input/output ports is located at the center of the cylinder and at the tangential direction with the cylinder wall. The modeling results showed that it was possible to eliminate no-flow region(stagnant layer) as shown in the vertical type when an inlet and an outlet were installed on the tangential direction of the cylinder as shown in the tangential type. Also, in the tangential type, vortex-type flow appeared as dominant, and it showed a complicated flow not deviated to one side. When the number of input/output was two, there was no deviated flow, and complicated flows were generated all across the tube. From the test result, it was found that input/output of flow was tangential type and complicated flows with no stagnant layer would be generated when there are two inputs/outputs, respectively.

  • Recently, the operating speed of pressure devices is increased for high performance. It lead to the increase of flow rate. Consequently, the results in the high relative contribution of flow borne noise to the noise from pipe. Analyzing the characteristics of flow-borne noise is essential for evaluating noise performance during the design stage of the piping system. Therefore, in this paper, the noise generation mechanism and transfer characteristic was numerically investigated. The wall pressure induced by the fluid moving through the orifice was predicted using the compressible Large Eddy Simulation (LES). The Wavenumber-Frequency Analysis (WFA) was employed to decompose the wall pressure into incompressible and compressible component, which are to cause Fluid Induced Vibration (FIV) and Acoustic Induced Vibration (AIV). The propagation and contribution characteristics were analyzed using the separated incompressible and compressible wall pressure components. Additionally, the correlation between these pressure components and the internal flow within the piping was investigated through flow field analysis, which elucidated the mechanisms and propagation characteristics of flow-induced noise. From these results, it was confirmed that the contribution of the incompressible wall pressure component was high near the noise source and that the contribution of the compressible wall pressure component increased as it propagated long distances upstream and downstream direction of the noise source.

  • A butterfly throttle valve has been used to control the brake power of an SI engine by controlling the mass flow-rate of intake air in the induction system. However, the valve has a serious effect on the volumetric efficiency of the engine due to the pressure resistance in the induction system. In this study, a new intake air controlling valve named "Variable Geometry Throttle Valve(VGTV)" is proposed to minimize the pressure resistance in the intake system of an SI engine. The design concept of VGTV is on the application of a venturi nozzle in the air flow path. Instead of change of the butterfly valve angle in the airflow field, the throat width of the VGTV valve is varied with the operating condition of an SI engine. In this numerical study, CFD(computational fluid dynamics) simulation technique was incorporated to have an aerodynamics performance analysis of the two air flow controlling systems; butterfly valve and VGTV and compared the results to know which system has lower pressure resistance in the air intake system. From the result, it was found that VGTV has lower pressure resistance than the butterfly valve. Especially VGTV is effective on the low and medium load operating condition of an SI engine. The averaged pressure resistance of VGTV is about 49.0% lower than the value of the conventional butterfly throttle valve.

  • Investigations into cavity flows have been conducted for noise and vibration problems that arise in cavity systems. Cavity systems have been applied in engineering devices and have undergone rapid development in the aerospace industry. Meanwhile, to the author's best knowledge, the cavity on a curved wall has been seldom studied. The present work is conducted to study the flow physics of a cavity mounted on a curved wall. Numerical analysis is performed to investigate the cavity flow. Two variables of sub- and supersonic cavity flows were considered: the radius of curvature of the curved wall (L/R) and the inlet Mach number. The results show that the uniform vortex generated by the cavity flow on the curved wall stabilize the pressure fluctuation as time passes. As the inlet Mach number increases, the pressure fluctuation amplitude increases. The results obtained from the curved wall are compared with those from a straight wall using Rossiter's formula. The Strouhal number of the curved wall is lower than that of the straight wall. Lower Strouhal numbers have been obtained in the present computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results than in the theoretical results using Rossiter's formula.

  • Aircraft needs an inlet duct to supply the airflow to engine face. A fighter aircraft that requires low radar observability has to hide the engine face in the fuselage to reduce the Radar Cross Section(RCS). Therefore, the flow path of the inlet duct is changed into S-shape. The performance of the aircraft engine is known to be influenced by the shape and the centerline curvature of the S-Duct. In this study, CFD analysis of the RAE M 2129 S-Duct has been performed to investigate the influence of aspect ratio of inlet geometry. The performance of the S-Duct is evaluated in terms of the distortion coefficient. To simulate the flow under adverse pressure gradient better, $k-{\omega}SST$ turbulence model is employed. The computational results are validated with the ARA experimental data. The secondary flow and the flow separation are observed for all computational cases, while the semi-circular geometry has been found to produce the best results.

  • Although leakage at a low carbon steel pipe made by electrical resistance welding(ERW) was reported due to grooving corrosion, the cause for the corrosion has not yet been cleared. So lots of researches were carried out already about grooving corrosion mechanism of ERW carbon steel pipe but there is seldom study for water hammer happened by fluid phenomenon and corrosion rate by flow velocity. In this study, the corrosion test carried out using the ERW carbon steel pipe by changed the water speed and heat input in a month. The level of dissolved oxygen is maintained 5~5.5mg/l(amount of dissolved oxygen in tap water). The water speed for corrosion test is 1m/s, 2m/s, 3m/s. As the results, grooving corrosion rate is increased cause by water speed in the pipe. In the case of the ERW pipe with more heat input, grooving corrosion rate is decreased. It is therefore that welding heat input should be controlled based on the carbon content of the pipe in order to improve the corrosion reistance of the ERW pipe.

  • Whenever a mineshaft accidentally collapses, speedy risk assessment is both required and crucial. But onsite safety diagnosis by humans is reportedly difficult considering the additional risk of collapse of the unstable mineshaft. Generally, drones equipped with high-speed lidar sensors can be used for such inspection. However, the drone technology is restrictively applicable at very shallow depth, failing in mineshafts with depths of hundreds of meters because of the limit of wireless communication and turbulence inside the mineshaft. In previous study, a three-dimensional (3D) scanning system with a single channel lidar was fabricated and operated using towed cable in a mineshaft to a depth of 200 m. The rotation and pendulum movement errors of the measuring unit were compensated for by applying the data of inertial measuring unit and comparing the similarity between the scan data of the adjacent depths (Kim et al., 2020). However, the errors grew with scan depth. In this paper, a multi-channel lidar sensor to obtain a continuous cross-sectional image of the mineshaft from a winch system pulled from bottom upward. In this new approach, within overlapped region viewed by the multi-channel lidar, rotation error was compensated for by comparing the similarity between the scan data at the same depth. The fabricated system was applied to scan 0-165 m depth of the mineshaft with 180 m depth. The reconstructed image was depicted in a 3D graph for interpretation.
