Fact-Finding Survey of Herbicide Use at Farmer's Level and Distribution of Herbicide Resistant Weeds in Paddy Field of Jeonbuk Province, Korea (전북지역 제초제 저항성 논 잡초 발생분포 및 제초제 사용실태)

  • This study was conducted to obtain basis information for effective weed control by the fact-finding survey of herbicides use at farmer's level and distribution of herbicide resistant weeds in paddy field of Jeonbuk province, Korea. The distributions of major paddy field weeds and frequently used herbicide according to the survey were as follows. The dominant weeds in rice paddy field were Echinochloa crus-galli, Eleocharis kuroguwai, Scirpus juncoides, Monochoria vaginalis, etc.. Preferred herbicides widely used by farmers were ranked in the following order, early and middle treatment (48.0%), treatment before transplanting (36.7%) and foliar treatment (15.3%). The occurrence of herbicide-resistant weeds according to collected paddy soils was as follows. The occurring area of herbicide-resistant weeds was 24,413 ha, approximately 18.4% of rice cultivation area. Herbicide-resistant weeds were occurred in four species. The order of occurrence were Scirpus juncoides (39.0%) > Monochoria vaginalis (27.8%) > Echinochloa crus-galli (16.6%) and Cyperus difformis (16.6%). This information could be useful for estimation of future herbicide-resistant weed and establishment of herbicide-resistant weed control methods in Jeonbuk province, Korea.

Response of Weed Population to Long-term Fertilizer Application (장기간 시비조건에 (施肥條件) 따른 잡초발생(雜草發生) 변화(變化)에 관한 (硏究))

  • A study was conducted to evaluate the weed population as affected by repeated application of fertilizers for 15 years (nonfertilized, PK, NK, NPK, NPK+Compost, NPK+Straw and NPK+lime). Alopecurus aequalis authority did not grow at all without P application and lime reduced the population of A. aequalis. Total number of weeds were the largest at 5-10cm soil layer and increased by application of compost and straw. Monochoria vaginalis dominated in NPK+compost and NP plot. Scirpus hotarui dominated in NPK+straw. Both Eleocharis kuroguwai and Potamogeton distinctus dominated in nonfertilized plot. Numbers of M. vaginalis and S. hotarui were larger low pH 6 while that of E. kuroguwai and P. distinctus at pH 6 to pH 7. Incidence of M. vaginalis and S. hotorui was great at pH's lower than 6, while E. kuroguwai and P. distinctus favored pH's ranging from 6 to 7.

  • A series of synthesized N-(2-fluoro-4-chloro-5-alkyloxyphenyl)-3,4-dimethyl-2-arylthio-5-oxo-2,5-dihydropyrrole derivatives as substrates were found to selectivity significantly with both rice plant (Oryza sativa L.) and weeds, barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) and bulrush (Scriptus juncoides) for those herbicidal activities at a rate of 0.1 kg/ha with post emergence under submerged conditions. The structure activity relationships (SARs) on herbicidal activity of $SR_{2}$=2-arylthio substituents on the pyrrole ring were analysized. From the results, the relative contribute orders of the $SR_{2}$ with phenyl group on the activity are meta > para > ortho-substituents. Among these compounds, the $R_{1}=propargyl$ (IA) subsrituents, $1{\sim}12$ showed higher activity than the $R_{1}$=2-chloro-2-propenyl (IB) substituents, $13{\sim}16$. The $SR_{2}$ groups of IA substituents shown that the optimal steric constant, $(Es)_{opt.}=3.25$ and m-phenylthio substituents were found to be -contribute the activity against barnyard grass. But the herbicidal activity of IB substituents against bulrush would depend upon the molar refractivity, $M_{R}$ constant of $SR_{2}$ group.

Occurrence and Distribution of Herbicide Resistant Weeds in the Paddy Field of Chungnam Province (충남지역에서의 제초제 저항성 논 잡초 발생 및 분포)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the occurrence and distribution of herbicide resistant weeds at rice fields in Chungnam province of Korea in 2017. Herbicide-resistant weeds occurred in 64,782 ha, which comprise 47.0% of the total paddy field area of Chungnam province. The infested area of herbicide resistant weeds was estimated in Seosan-si (11.9%), Nonsan-si (11.1%), Dangjin-si (10.9%), Boryeong-si (9.2%) and Asan-si (7.8%). The most dominant herbicide resistant weeds in rice fields were Monochoria vaginalis, followed by Lindernia dubia, Schoenoplectus juncoides, Echinochloa oryzicola, Cyperus difformis and Sagittaria trifolia. Herbicide resistant M. vaginalis, L. dubia, and S. juncoides occurred throughout Chungnam province, and herbicide resistant S. trifolia was only found in Dangjin-si. Compared with the 2011 survey, the infested area of herbicide-resistant weeds decreased, but the incidence rates were similar. The herbicide rotation with different modes of actions across growing seasons is recommended to control herbicide-resistant weeds in the infested fields. It is necessary to monitor herbicide resistance regularly and conduct integrated herbicide resistance management in this area.

Types of Weed Community in Transplanted Lowland Rice and Relationship between Yield and Weed Weight in Weed Communities (논 잡초의 군락형 종류와 군락형별 잡초발생과 수도수량과의 관계)

  • Eight different weed community types growing in association with transplanted rice were identified in the experimental fields used in these studies. The Importance Value (LV.) of weed species growing in association with rice changed with time. The I. V. of Echinochloa glabrescens Munro ex Hook f. increased from 40 days after transplanting (DAT) until heading and then, decreased from heading to maturity of rice. However, the LV. of Monochoria vaginalis (Burm.) Pres!. and Echinochloa crus-galli ssp. hispidula (Retz.) Honda increased from 40 DAT to maturity while Scirpus maritimus L. decreased from 40 DAT. There was a high negative correlation between grain yield and weed weight at rice heading in all weed communities. The competitive ability of rice against weeds varied depending upon weed species. The highest yield decrease due to weed competition was obtained from the E. crus-galli ssp. hispidula-S. Maritimus community. Forty-two percent yield reduction was caused by competition of 100g dry weight of weeds per square meter of this community type at rice heading. The yield decrease for the same amount of weeds was 10% for the E. glabrescens community, 15% for the M vaginalis community and the M vaginalis-Scirpus supinus L. community and 21% for the M vaginalis-E. glabrescens-Fimbristylis littoralis Gaud.-S. maritimus community type.

Survey of Weed Flora on Paddy Fields in Chungbuk Province in Korea (충북지역 발생 논잡초 분포 조사)

  • The survey of weed occurrence was conducted to identify dominant weed species in the paddy field. Total 346 sites of the 12 regions in Chungbuk Province in Korea were investigated in July, 2013. Weed flora was composed of 43 species belonged to 15 families. The compositions of major plant families, Cyperaces, Poaceae, Pontederiaceae and Asteraceae, were 21.5, 17.4, 15.5 and 12.7%, respectively. Based on life cycle, weed species was grouped into annuals of 71.3 and perennials of 28.1%. The most dominant weed species in paddy fields of Chungbuk Province were Monochoria vaginalis (14.5%), followed by Scirpus juncoides (10.5%), Echinochloa oryzoides (9.3%), Eleocharis kuroguwai (7.0%), Aeschynomene indica (6.2%) et al. The similarity of paddy weeds in 12 regions observed through TWINSPAN analysis was distinguished by Persicaria longiseta, Aneilema keisak, Persicaria thunbergii, Fimbristylis millacea, Blyxa japonica, Digitaria ciliaris, Potamogeton distinctus, Cyperus nipponicus. This information could be useful for estimation of future weed occurrence and establishment of weed control methods in chungbuk province in Korea.

Effect of Salinity on the Survival and Growth of Larvae of the Boreal Digging Frog (Kaloula borealis) (맹꽁이 유생의 생장과 생존에서의 염분영향)

  • This study was conducted to examine the effect of salinity on the early embryonic development stage of boreal digging frogs (Kaloula borealis). An experiment was carried out with the eggs of K. borealis mating couples laid along the coastal zone of Jeju Island in June 2013. The salinity was set to 0, 1, 3, 5, and 7 ‰, respectively. The survival and growth of the larvae at various stages from the egg phase to the closing of their external gills phase were observed. In another experiment, tadpoles in internal gill stage were placed in solutions with salinity of 0, 1, 3, 5, and 7 ‰, respectively, and their survival rate and growth rate were observed, and then the results of the two experiments above were compared. The results showed that in egg and external gill stage, there was no significant difference in survival rate in 3 ‰ solution, though there was low survival rate in 5 ‰ solution. Further, all the eggs were dead in 7 ‰ solution, so it appeared that solutions with salinity of 5 ‰ or higher affect the survival of K. borealis in the early embryonic development. Larvae in the internal gill stage showed no significant difference in survival rate from the control group up to a salinity of 5 ‰, but when placed in a solution of over 7 ‰ salinity, the survival rate decreased. The growth rate also slowed down with the higher salinity. It appeared that in both the external gill stage and the internal gill stage in 5 ‰ solution, the growth rate decreased significantly compared to the control group. From this study it is concluded that higher salinity values have a significant impact on the survival and growth of the K. borealis larvae and this finding can be used to conserve K. borealis species that are decreasing in number due to the side effects of development in coastal areas.

Herbicidal Activity and Persistency in Aqueous Solution of Ortho Disubstituted Benzenesulfonyl Urea Derivatives (새로운 Ortho 이치환 Benzenesulfonyl Urea 유도체의 제초활성과 수용액중의 잔류성)

  • The new sixteen herbicidal N-2-(1-hydroxy-2-fluoroethyl)-6-substituted(X)-benzenesulfonyl-N'-4,6-dimethoxypyrimidinyl-2-yl urea derivatives(S) were synthesized and thier herbicidal activities$(pI_{50})$ in vivo against rice(Orysa Sativa L.), Barnyard grass(Echninochloa orizicola) and Bulrush(Scirpus juncoides) were measured by the pot test under paddy conditions. The structure activity relationship(SAR) were studied using the physicochemical parameters of ortho-substituents(X) and hydrolysis rate constant(logk) and herbicidal activities by the multiple regression technique. The SAR suggested that the herbicidal activities were more dependant on the hydrolysis rate constant(logk>0) than the steric constants $(Es, small width($B_4$) and length($L_1$). Among them, halogens(2 & 5), methyl(15) and non(H) substituent(1) showed higher herbicidal activity for weeds which was not tolerent to rise and weeds. The herbicidal activity was increased and the persistency in aqueous solution was decreased by electron donating(${\sigma}0<0$) groups as ortho-substituent(X). From the relationship equation between herbicidal activity and hydrolysis rate constant, it was assumed that the both reactions would be proceeds with similar process. And the conditions on the ortho substituents to show higher herbicidal activity and the persistency in aqueous solution were also discussed.

A Study of an Airfoil for Optimal Aerodynamic Performance of Flapping Motion (Flapping운동의 최적공력성능을 위한 익형 연구)

  • In this work, we propose a new idea of flapping airfoil design for optimal aerodynamic performance from detailed computational investigations of flow physics. Generally, flapping motion which is combined with pitching and plunging motion of airfoil, leads to complex flow features such as leading edge separation and vortex street. As it is well known, the mechanism of thrust generation of flapping airfoil is based on inverse Karman-vortex street. This vortex street induces jet-like flow field at the rear region of trailing edge and then generates thrust. The leading edge separation vortex can also play an important role with its aerodynamic performances. The flapping airfoil introduces an alternative propulsive way instead of the current inefficient propulsive system such as a propeller in the low Reynolds number flow. Thrust coefficient and propulsive efficiency are the two major parameters in the design of flapping airfoil as propulsive system. Through numerous computations, we found the specific physical flow phenomenon which governed the aerodynamic characteristics in flapping airfoil. Based on this physical insight, we could come up with a new kind of airfoil of tadpole-shaped and more enhanced aerodynamic performance.

A Case of Natural Human Infection by Echinostomu cinetorchis (Echinestoma cinetorchis의 인체감염 1예)

  • A human case of Echinostoma cinetorchii infection was found in Seoul Paik Hospital on August, 1987. Large trematode eggs, $98.9{\times}62.7{\mu\textrm{m}}$ in average size, were detected in stool examination. The eggs had a small.sired operculum and abopercular wrinkling. After treatment with praziquantel (single dose of 16.2mg/kg) and purgation with magnesium citrate, an adult fluke was collected. It was 8.0 mm long, equipped with 37 collar spines around head crown, and had only one testis just behind the Mehlis' gland. It was identified as E. cinetorchis Ando et Ozaki, 1923. The patient is an 18-year old man residing in Seoul, and was hospitalized due to nephritis. He had eaten raw meat juice of fresh water fishes such as top minnows (Orygias Satipes) and loaches, or tadpoles, which are considered possible source of this fluke infection. This is the 4th human case of E, cineterchis infection in Korea.
