  • This study analyzed whether the ontology-based information-searching model affected the ability of students to effectively search for meaningful information to carry out their projects. The experiment results illustrated that the amount of relevant information sought by the ontology-based information retrieval (OIR) method was significantly greater than that of the existing information retrieval (EIR) method. In addition, the relevance rate of the bookmarked documents sought by the OIR method was significantly greater than that of the EIR method. Interviews showed that the OIR model was helpful for students to effectively find information and thus, it helped them to complete the project more easily. Furthermore, the OIR model was beneficial for them to understand the subordinate concepts and their relationships for an important learning concept. The results of this study indicate that the OIR model could be used as a supplementary learning tool for project-based learning.

  • The purpose of this study is to design and evaluate an individual instance-based ontology retrieval system for archival records of the "Saemaul Movement". We used Protege editor 4.1 to design an individual instance-based ontology. To evaluate the proposed ontology retrieval system, five short queries and ten narrative queries were used and compared their precision and recall against the NARA keyword-based retrieval system. The performance results showed that the individual-based ontology retrieval system outperformed the keyword-based retrieval system in terms of the measurement of precision and recall.

  • The semantic web-based social network is highly useful in a variety of areas. In this paper we make diverse analyses of the FOAF-based social network, and propose an expert recommendation system. This system presents useful method of ontology-based social network using SparQL, RDFS inference, and visualization tools. Then we apply it to real social network in order to make various analyses of centrality, small world, scale free, etc. Moreover, our system suggests method for analysis of an expert on specific field. We expect such method to be utilized in multifarious areas - marketing, group administration, knowledge management system, and so on.

  • This paper aims to suggest a facet-based ontology model that can help sort and access records of dispersed families to address these problems. The facet systematically defines the categories of target concepts, which can create diverse and multiple access points. Using the top-down and bottom-up approaches, the facets, which consist of five upper classes and 18 lower classes, were derived for the records of dispersed families. The proposed ontology model was evaluated by real users. The results show that, overall, the ontology is complete and relevant in terms of access points, availability of context information of the records, and description elements for search and use of the records on dispersed families.

  • This study proposes a methodology for using facet analysis in ontology modeling and investigates how facet analysis could be utilized in ontology design processes. We applied facet analysis methods developed by Ranganathan and CRG (Classification Research Group) to modeling Smartphone ontology. Utilizing the guiding principles of Ranganathan and CRG, main facets, such as Type, Spec, Function, Operation, Product, Person, Agent, Space and Time, are derived for Smartphone ontology. It is hoped that the methods and procedures employed in identifying and categorizing facets and ontology in this study will provide insights into designing future ontologies.

  • Ontologies are the core components of the Semantic Web and knowledge-based systems. But it is difficult to find useful ontologies in actual domains. In order to build useful domain ontology, the conceptualization of the domain knowledge by knowledge experts of the specific domain and the specification of conceptualized knowledge with formal languages by ontology designers are required. In addition, structured and detailed guidelines and methods should be provided to be shared by the development team members. However, existing ontology building methodologies define and describe the skeletal structure of the whole building process at the top-layer. We build a useful academic ontology that is based on the conceptual knowledge structure in the domain of philosophy, and propose a detailed methodology to build a text ontology based on Topic Maps. Our methodology consists of two phases, ontology modelling and ontology implementation. We implement a philosophy knowledge portal to support retrieving and navigating of the philosophy knowledge.
