Puroose: We examined whether intratumoral (i.t.) administration of dendritic cells (DCs) into a treated tumor could induce local and systemic antitumor effects in a mouse tumor model. Methods and Materials: C57BL/6 mice were inoculated s.c. in the right and left thighs with MCA-102 fibrosarcoma cells on day 0 and on day 7, respectively. On day 7, the tumors (usually 6 mm in diameter) on the right thigh were heated by immersing the tumor-bearing leg in a circulating water bath at $43^{\circ}C$ for 30 min; thereafter, the immature DCs were i.t administered to the right thigh tumors. This immunization procedure was repeated on days 7, 14 and 21. The tumors in both the right and left thighs were measured every 7 days and the average sizes were determined by applying the following formula, tumor $size=0.5{\times}(length+width)$. Cytotoxicity assay was done to determine tumor-specific cytotoxic T-lymphocyte activity. Results: Hyperthermia induced apoptosis and heat shock proteins (HSPs) in tumor occurred maximally after 6 hr. For the local treated tumor, hyperthermia (HT) alone inhibited tumor growth compared with the untreated tumors (p<0.05), and furthermore, the i.t. administered DCs combined with hyperthermia (HT + DCs) additively inhibited tumor growth compared with HT alone (p<0.05). On the distant untreated tumor, HT alone significantly inhibited tumor growth (p<0.05), and also HT + DCs potently inhibited tumor growth (p<0.001); however, compared with HT alone, the difference was not statistically significant. In addition, HT + DCs induced strong cytotoxicity of the splenocytes against tumor cells compared to DCs or HT alone. Conclusion: HT + DCs induced apoptosis and increased the expression of HSPs, and so this induced a potent local and systemic antitumor response in tumor-bearing mice. This regimen may be beneficial for the treatment of human cancers.
Hyperthermia can enhance the radiation effect as a synergistic reaction in combined X-ray irradiation and hyperthermia; hyperthermia sensitize radioresistant S-phase cells and inhibit cellular recovery from sublethal damage. We fabricated 100 watts, 2450 MHz microwave applicator for hyperthermia and planned the method and condition of heating and measured the temperature by using Agar phantom as a preliminary test. For biological examination, 102 rats were divided into 4 groups as hyperthermia, X-ray irradiation (6Gy-15Gy), combined X-ray and hyperthermia, and normal control groups. Microscopic examination of the rectum and bladder was done and the results were as followings: 1. The microwave generator with 100 watts, 2450MHz magnetron could be heating up to $40^{\circ}{\sim}50^{\circ}C$ for one hour in living tissue. 2. The thermal distribution in tissue equivalent phantom with microwave can be maintained at $40^{\circ}{\sim}44^{\circ}C$ in area of 3cm in depth and 2-10cm in diameter. 3. In Hyperthermia alone group, there was submucosal edema of the rectum but no histologic change in the urinary bladder was seen. 4. The minimal necrosis of the mucosa was appeared in the rectum and bladder after 15 days of 6 Gy and 8 Gy irradiation respectively. The minimal necrosis of the muscle layer of rectum and bladder was appeared after 15 days of 8Gy and 60days of 10Gy irradiation respectively. 5. In combined group of radiation and hyperthermia, thermal enhancement ratio (calculated at necrosis of mucosa and muscle layer) of rectum and bladder was 1.0, and it suggest that there is no change of tolerance dose of normal rectum and bladder.
Purpose: Troglitazone (TRO), a PPAR-$\gamma$ agonist, can reduce heat shock protein (HSP) 70 and increase the antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase, which might affect thermal sensitivity. Here, we investigated whether TRO modifies thermal sensitivity in uterine cervical cancer cells, which is most commonly treated by hyperthermia (HT). Materials and Methods: HeLa cells were treated with $5{\mu}M$ TRO for 24 hours before HT at $42^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. Cell survival was analyzed by clonogenic assay. The expression of HSPs was analyzed by Western blot. SOD and catalase activity was measured and reactive oxygen species (ROS) was measured using 2',7'-dichlorofluorescin diacetate and dihydroethidium. Results: The decreased cell survival by HT was increased by preincubation with TRO before HT. Expression of HSP 70 was increased by HT however, it was not decreased by preincubation with TRO before HT. The decreased Bcl-2 expression by HT was increased by preincubation with TRO. SOD and catalase activity was increased by 1.2 and 1.3 times, respectively with TRO. Increased ROS by HT was decreased by preincubation with TRO. Conclusion: TRO decreases thermal sensitivity through increased SOD and catalase activity, as well as scavenging ROS in HeLa cells.

Purpose : To improve the therapeutic results of postoperative recurrent disease and inoperable disease of stomach cancer, we used the thermoradiotherapy. We conducted a retrospective analysis of the results and compared the results of hyperthermia before radiotherapy and those of hyperthermia after radiotherapy Materials and Methods : From July 1994 to November 1996, we treated twenty patients with locally advanced stomach cancer and recurrent stomach cancer with thermoradiotherapy. We divided those patients into two groups : hyperthermia before radiotherapy group (PreRT group : 13 Patients) and hyperthermia after radiotherapy group (PostRT group : 7 patients). We performed radiation therapy with the total tumor dose of 3000-5040cGy in a traction of 180-300cGy and 5 fractions per week. Hyperthermia was performed with 8 MHz radiofrequency apparatus. PreRT group patients were treated daily for 30 minutes before the radiation therapy within the interval of ten minutes. And PostRT group patients were treated with 1-2 sessions Per week for 40-60 minutes after the radiation therapy within the interval of 10 minutes. Results : Overall response rate was $33.3\%$. This response rate appeared the same in both groups. Mean survival and 1 rear survival rate were 10.3 months and $16.5\%$. In PreRT group, mean survival and 1 year survival rate were 6.8 months and $9.0\%$, and in PostRT group, mean survival and 1 year survival rate were 7.7 months and $34\%$. There were no statistically significant difference between the prognostic factors and therapeutic results. Conclusion : The thermoradiotherapy was a safe treatment method in advanced and recurrent gastric cancer when compared with other treatment. Because the number of patients we treated was small and the follow up period was short. we were not able to draw any conclusions about the therapeutic efficacy of the sequence of radiation therapy and hyperthermia. Therefore, further clinical trials of thermoradiotherauy for stomach cancer appear to be warranted.
This study aims to examine whether the use of a spinal column thermal massage device for patients with muscle pain is effective in improving muscle pain, and to verify whether it is also effective in improving affective depression and stress. To this end, 16 study participants (male 31.25%) were treated with a thermal massage device during 5 sessions a week for 4 weeks and 40 minutes per session. According to the study results, the subjective pain level changed by a rate of VAS -46.32% and PDI -44.86%; a significant decrease was observed in, both, VAS and PDI. The depression and stress levels changed by a rate of BDI -21.84% and SRI -11.48%; a significant decrease was observed in, both, BDI and SRI. Therefore, the use of a thermal massage device to treat patients with muscle pain is expected to have a positive effect in improving not only subjective muscle pain, but also depression and stress.
In accordance with escalating demands for advanced technology products, the smart clothing that includes embedded ICT technology have expanded into fields of daily life. As a result of this trend, interest in smart clothing with digitally controllable heating has rapidly grown and the market for smart heated clothing has also expanded. Increasing of prospect in smart heated clothing market, the effectiveness and thermal sensation research of the location on the pad attached is insufficient. This study was conducted to find the optimal location of heated clothing via experimental research on changes in skin temperature and subjective thermal sensation when heating pads were placed on different areas of the body. For this experiment, the subjects consisted of 10 males in their 20's of standard physique. The skin temperature at 11 different areas of the body, rectal temperature, and subjective thermal sensation were taken at different stages (before testing, after a 20 minute rest period, 20 minute treatment period, and after a 40 minute recovery period) in an artificial-climate chamber at $-5^{\circ}C$. As a result, the optimal location for heating pads in smart clothing was estimated and suggested.
Purpose : It has been well established that the response of cells and tissues to low LET radiations (X- or gamma-ray) can be enhanced by combining with hyperthermia. However, there has been relatively little work of hyperthermia on the possible modification of either cellular or tissue responses to other types of radiation. So, we investigated the combined effect of fast neutron irradiation and hyperthermia according to the sequence and time interval of the two. Materials and Methods : In MKN-45 cells, a human stomach cancer ceil line, suwiving fractions were measured according to the sequential treatment of 0, 4, 2, 0 hour-intewal for fast neutron irradiation (1.5 Gy) combined with hyperthermia (41 $^{\circ}C$ for 30 min or 43$^{\circ}C$ for 30 min). Results : D$_{0}$ and n of MKN-45 for neutron were 0.8 Gy and 2.5, respectively. The surviving fraction by 1.5 Gy of neutron was 0.36$\pm$0.34. Interacting powers were mostly ranged between 1 and 2, but they were 3.0 and 2.7, respectively for hyperthermia (41 $^{\circ}C$ for 30 min) fellowed by neutron irradiation 6 and 4 hours later. Conclusion : The combined effect of fast neutron (1.5 Gy) and hyperthermia (41 $^{\circ}C$ or 43$^{\circ}C$ for 30min) is largely independently additive. Preceding mild hyperthermia (41 $^{\circ}C$ for 30 min) 4 or 6 hours before neutron may cause decreased sensitivity to subsequent neutron irradiation.
The purpose of this study was to investigate actual sleeping environments in Ondol rooms depending on the season. The experiment was performed on five healthy women. The bedroom environments using Ondol were measured in five cases (three apartments and two houses). The environments in bedroom, bedding temperature, skin temperature and thermal sensation were measured continuously through the seven days for each season in real life. This data of sleeping environments were analyzed in the view of seasonal variations and housing types. Annual average bedroom temperatures: $26.2{\sim}31.0^{\circ}C$ in apartments, $15.7{\sim}33.6^{\circ}C$ in houses. Annual average bedroom humidity: 48.3~82.1% RH in apartments, 64.9~87.0% RH in houses. During sleeping, temperatures of contact surfaces like sheets and under quilts ranged between $30.5^{\circ}C$ and $34.1^{\circ}C$ regardless of season or housing type. Annual average rectal temperature was $36.8^{\circ}C$ with no significant difference in season or housing type. In the point of thermal sensation, neutral temperature of the bedroom was $25.9^{\circ}C$ in apartments and $20.3^{\circ}C$ in houses. It was concluded that in spite of thermal environmental variations according to the seasons, skin, bedding and bedroom temperatures in apartments were better and more stable than those of houses. It is regarded that while houses are brick structured, apartments are steel-frame structured. Due to better insulation and air tightness, apartments were affected less from outdoor temperature and maintained higher room temperature than houses.

This study was conducted to examine the effect of tree density of Pinus koraiensis forest on the thermal comfort and the physiological response of human body in summer season. As the indicators of thermal comfort were used the predicted mean vote (PMV) and predicted percentage of dissatisfied (PPD), while the heart rate variability was used for the physiological indicator of subjects. The subjects were 15 physically healthy men and women in their 20s ($23.7{\pm}1.7$ years old). The subjects sat in each site to measure HRV for 5 minutes and the thermal comfort of each site was measured. As a results, it was proven by PMV and PPD that the Pinus koraiensis forest with 120% tree density was thermally more comfortable than the Pinus koraiensis forest with 80% tree density. In case of the subjects' physiological response, the Pinus koraiensis forest with 120% tree density showed significantly higher HF of HRV than the Pinus koraiensis forest with 80% tree density and significantly lower LF/HF. Therefore, the findings of this study scientifically proved that the Pinus koraiensis forest with 120% tree density is thermally more comfortable and physiologically more relaxing than the Pinus koraiensis forest with 80% tree density.
