  • This experimental study has been carried out to investigate the reduction in side friction of open caisson using air-jet method. For this study, the large size caisson having air-pockets was used. This caisson was used as substructure of bridge. By using air-jet method, settlement time was decreased and even settlement was reached to the depth which conventional methods could not be. We found that the side resistance decreases to less then half the expected value. In addition to these merits, the air-jet method can result in self-weight settlement without applying additional load. Also the open caisson damage caused by blasting can be prevented with this method.

  • In order to cope with the abnormally high waves during the storm surge due to climate change, various methods have been proposed for interlocking adjacent caissons to enhance stability of harbor structures. Among the methods, it was studied the method based on an open-cell caisson having reduction effect increasing the cohesion with adjunction caissons by filling materials such as crushed rocks in an inter-cell formed by two facing open-cells which consist of transverse walls. It is necessary to investigate the shear behaviors of an inter-cell to secure the stability using calculating shear forces on inter-cell under oblique wave loadings. It was analyzed the shear force share ratio with the length of internal and external wall and the number of internal walls. Numerical results show that 60~70% of the shear load is transmitted to adjacent caisson through the internal walls, more than 30% is through the external wall. It was applicable in the assumption that filling materials was uniformly distributed in inter-cells, and further studies were worth consideration on other conditions under construction.

  • In this study, we proposed a new-type of circular perforated caisson breakwater consisting of a bundle of latticed blocks that can be applied to a small port such as a fishing port, and numerically investigated the hydraulic characteristics of the breakwater. The numerical method used in this study is OLAFOAM which newly added wave generation module, porous media analysis module and reflected wave control module based on OpenFOAM that is open source CFD software published under the GPL license. To investigate the applicability of OLAFOAM, the variations of wave pressure acting on the three-dimensional slit caisson were compared to the previous experimental results under the regular wave conditions, and then the performance for irregular waves was examined from the reproducibility of the target irregular waves and frequency spectrum analysis. As a result, a series of numerical simulations for the new-type of circular perforated caisson breakwaters, which is similar to slit caisson breakwater, was carried out under the irregular wave actions. The hydraulic characteristics of the breakwater such as wave overtopping, reflection, and wave pressure distribution were carefully investigated respect to the significant wave height and period, the wave chamber width, and the interconnectivity between them. The numerical results revealed that the wave pressure acting on the new-type of circular perforated caisson breakwaters was considerably smaller than the result of the impermeable vertical wall computed by the Goda equation. Also, the reflection of the new-type caisson breakwater was similar to the variation range of the reflection coefficient of the existing slit caisson breakwater.

  • It is well known that earth pressure on the cylindrical open caisson and cylindrical retaining wall of a shaft is less than that at-rest and in plane strain condition because of the horizontal and vertical arching effects due to wall displacement and stress relief. In order to examine the earth pressure distribution of a cylindrical wall, model tests were performed in dry sand for the care of constant wall displacement with depth. Model test apparatus which can control wall displacement, wall friction, and wall shape ratio was developed. The effects of various factors that influence earth pressure acting on the cylindrical retaining wall of a shaft were investigated.
