  • $^{222}Rn$ concentrations in the groundwater samples without standard material due to the short half-life (3.82 day) were measured through the establishment of the counting efficiency of LSC (Liquid Scintillation Counter) using a standard source of $^{226}Ra$. This study for Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) of $^{222}Rn$ analysis was performed to analyze blank samples, duplicate samples, samples of groundwater sampling before and after. In-situ blank samples collected were in the range of 0.44~6.28 pCi/L and laboratory samples were in the range of 1.66~4.95 pCi/L. Their correlation coefficient was 0.9691 and the source contamination from sampling, migration and keeping of samples were not identified. The correlation coefficient between original and duplicate samples from 65 areas was 0.9987. Because radon is an inert gas, in case of groundwater sampling, it is considered to affect the radon concentration. We analyzed samples separately by groundwater sampling before and after using distilled water, but there is no significant difference for $^{222}Rn$ concentrations in distilled waters of two types.

  • This study investigated the runoff characteristics containing NPS pollutants in urban areas and estimated the optimal number of storm events to be monitored. 13 residential areas, 8 commercial areas, 9 transportation areas and 11 industrial areas were selected to be monitored located in urban areas. Monitoring was performed from 2008 to 2016 with a total of 632 rainfall events. As a result, it was found that commercial area needs priority NPS management compared to other landuses because the commercial area has high runoff coefficient and NPS pollutant EMC compared with other landuses. The annual monitoring frequency for each landuse was estimated to be 11 to 14 times for industrial area, 12 to 14 times for transportation area, 11 to 13 times for commercial area and 22 to 25 times for residential area. Even with the use of accumulated monitoring data for several years, there is still high probability of uncertainty due to high error in some pollutant items, and it is necessary to establish monitoring know-how and data accumulation to reduce errors by continuous monitoring.

  • The results of COD concentration on August of 2004 were 6.80 ppm in North Mokpo Inner Bay, 4.42 ppm un front of YongSang Bank and 4.60 ppm in front of ShinAn Beach Hotel which is over III level Marine Environmental Standard. The others researched five stations sea water quality of Mokpo inner bay are reached II-III level. The concentration of total nitrogen range from 1.23 ppm to 3.56 ppm and total phosphorous concentration was range from 0.07 ppm to 0.12 ppm which are to be II-III level. This results show that the Mokpo inner bay is unsuitable for aquaculture and for use of marine resort, it can be only avaliable for industrial and harbour port use. In this study, we researched 12 point source flow into Mokpo Inner bay. The rate from YoungSang river in total inflow of TN was up to 70-93 % and rate of TP was up to 31-91 % respectively. In this results, we have to control the discharge from YoungSang river first of all then control the discharge from North Harbour domestic wastewater treatment, InAm river and NamHae domestic wastewater treatment in order to improve the water quality of Mokpo Inner bay.

  • A nutrient-concentrating system was operated to retrieve total phosphorus efficiently from a non-point pollution source. Attached bacteria were expected to play an important role in the system. Phosphorous was concentrated by formation of bacterial biofilms on rubberized coconut fiber media of the system. While concentration of total phosphorus (TP) ranged merely 0.12~0.35 mg/L in the stream water, TP levels in pore water and the media were 0.45~0.86 mg/L and 40.91~242.71 mg/kg, respectively. Total bacterial number (TBN) ranged $0.3\sim2.3\times10^6$ cells/ml in stream water, $0.4\sim4.4\times10^6$ cells/ml in pore water and $0.8\sim1.9\times10^9$ cells/g in media. There was a close correlation between TP and TBN. Based on band profiles in DGGE analyses, bacterial communities in the media were different from that in the stream water. Clostridium spp. were abundant in the stream water while Aquabacterium spp. were dominant species in early stages of biofilm formation in the media. The genera predominant in matured biofilms of the media were Clostridium and Enterococcus.

  • The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) developed by the USDA-Agricultural Research Service for the prediction of land management impact on water, sediment, and agricultural chemical yields in a large-scale basin was applied to Daecheong Reservoir basin to estimate the amount of soil losses from different land uses. The research outcomes provide important indications for reservoir managers and policy makers to search alternative watershed management practices for the mitigation of reservoir turbidity flow problems. After calibrations of key model parameters, SWAT showed fairly good performance by adequately simulating observed annual runoff components and replicating the monthly flow regimes in the basin. The specific soil losses from agricultural farm field, forest, urban area, and paddy field were 33.1, $2.3{\sim}5.4$ depending on the tree types, 1.0, and 0.1 tons/ha/yr, respectively in 2004. It was noticed that about 55.3% of the total annual soil loss is caused by agricultural activities although agricultural land occupies only 10% in the basin. Although the soil erosion assessment approach adopted in this study has some extent of uncertainties due to the lack of detailed information on crop types and management activities, the results at least imply that soil erosion control practices for the vulnerable agricultural farm lands can be one of the most effective alternatives to reduce the impact of turbidity flow in the river basin system.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the performance of a small chamber sampling and analytical method for the measurement of total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) and formaldehyde (HCHO) emission from building materials. While VOC was determined by the adsorbent tube sampling and sequential thermal desorption coupled with GC/MSD analysis, formaldehyde sampled with DNPH-silica cartridge was analyzed by HPLC. Wide-range performance criteria such as repeatability, desorption efficiency, emission chamber recovery test, duplicate precision, breakthrough volume and method detection limits were investigated for the evaluation of small chamber method. The overall precision of the small chamber sampling and analytical methods was estimated within 20~30% for target compounds. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that the small chamber sampling and analytical method can be reliably applied for the measurement of building materials pollutants.

  • In this study, formaldehyde concentrations in two exhibition halls were monitored using a passive sampler from May 2012 to April 2013. Formaldehyde concentrations in the exhibition halls were 5 to 36 times higher than concentrations outdoors. Concentrations inside the exhibition room and showcase varied according to pollutant source, HVAC(heating, ventilation, air conditioning)system and environment management. The formaldehyde concentration levels were corrected according to a standard method prescribed by Indoor Air Quality Management Law of the Ministry of Environment, Korea. As a result, Most concentration levels exceeded the exhibition standard of the Ministry of Environment($100{\mu}g/m^3$) and artifacts conservation standard of Tokyo National Museum($50{\mu}g/m^3$). Seasonal concentrations in the exhibition room and showcase were in the order summer>fall>spring>winter. Formaldehyde emissions increased in summer when air temperature and relative humidity are both high. Formaldehyde concentration distribution according to the temperature and relative humidity showed positive correlation. Air temperature showed good correlation because $R^2$ was in the range of 0.8~0.9. Analysis of formaldehyde emission characteristics in the exhibition hall would be helpful in efforts to improve indoor air quality.

  • The quality of tap water on the whole water-supply system, from a large filtration plant to a private faucet, has to be guaranteed the standards of drinking water. At this point in time, however, the supply process of the tap water has not been monitored and managed scientifically. The piped water, especially the most small-scale reservoirs(underground or overhead type) are always exposed to various contaminations and impurities. Recently monitoring systems of water-quality were spread on some large filtration plants or distributing reservoirs. In particular, the water quality monitoring method using the internet is adopted into some local government whose inhabitants can check up the water quality anytime and anywhere. The construction of this system that has to apply a large scale needs, and has a limitation on the small water-supply system, such as apartments, public facilities and small-scale underground or overhead reservoirs. In this work, we suggest the integration system of individual water-quality sensor modules that have a low price. By using the developed integration system and online monitoring program operated on the internet, the system managers of reservoirs can monitor and manage water-quality characteristic values of drinking water in online. Since the proposed system was modularized, the system can be applied easily into various reservoirs with a low cost and regardless of its scale, small or large.

  • Various input data required for water quality modeling have considerable impacts on modeling results and relevant analysis due to the absence of data standardization and lack of data accuracy. With this in mind, this study mainly focused on the designing Korean Reach File for more effective water quality modeling through the supply of database composed with accurate hydraulic and hydrologic data. The Korean Reach File is the hydraulic database with the locational information of individual reaches, and each reach represents the stream reach of homogeneous hydraulic characteristics. In detail, it has reach code designating each stream reach, and topological information including catalog unit, segment, marker and index. It was also designed considering linkage of existing codes such as stream name and stream code. The devised reach code was implemented to Kyungan River at the City of Gwangju of Kyunggi Province and the results showed that the reach code could effectively support the input database integrating basic numerous data required for water quality modeling based on a criterion as well as easier linkage and utilization with existing database. In addition, more systematic water quality management was enabled through the linkage of existing data such as treatment facilities, pollutant data, and management institutes using the reach codes defined for each stream section. In the future, more efforts need to be made to adopt the reach code as the national standard data thereby enabling utilization of numerous relevant database through the assigning of reach code to individual stream reaches nationwide.

  • Attempts were made to analyze the national policy of soil contamination prevention and management of inactive or abandoned metal (IAM) mines in Korea. This approach focused on legal systems and legislation, remediation technology development, and the arrangement or distribution of budgets pertaining to national policy since the mid 1990's. Prevention of Mining Damage and Recovery Act enacted. Defines the roles, responsibility and budget of the government when recovering mine damages. However, in 2005 there still remains to improve the national policy of soil contamination prevention and management of IAM mines. Analysis of national and industrialized foreign countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands suggest the following improvements: i) arranging distinct regulations between strict and non-strict liability criteria for potentially responsible parties; limiting innocent and non-strict liability depending on the period of incurred mining activity, ii) enhancing participation of local communities by enforcing law and legislation, iii) establishing a national database system of (potentially) IAM contaminated sites based on the Website-Geographic Information System, iv) carrying out site-specific risk assessments and remediation of IAM contaminated sites, v) preparation and distribution of clean-up fund at mine sites adequately, and vi) technology development for the cleaning of IAM contaminated sites; awarding positive incentives of a legal nature for participants applying newly developed technology in IAM mines.
