  • The qualities of ginseng leaf teas prepared by six different processing methods were evaluated to develop the leaf tea. The leaf tea prepared by fermentation at $30^{\circ}C$ showed the highest in the ratio of 30 min water extracts to the total extractable matters. This ratio was followed in decreasing order by the heat dried tea and the one fermented at $25^{\circ}C$. The yellow, orange and red color intensities of water extracts were the highest in the tea prepared by toasting method followed by teas fermented at $30^{\circ}C\:and\:25^{\circ}C$. The amount of saponins extracted with boiling water was the highest in the tea fermented at $30^{\circ}C$ among teas investigated. This tea was also most acceptable in sensory evaluation by the flavour profile method.

  • A powdered beverage with afruit flavor was stored at 4, 21, 35 and $45^{\circ}C$ for 180 days to study ascerbic acid destruction at the selected temperatures. Degradation of ascorbic acid in the model followed the first order reaction, and the temperature dependence of reaction rate constants at tested temperatures was accounted for by the Arrhenius equqtion. The calculated activation energy for the destruction of ascorbic acid was 3.3 Kcal/mole. The relationship between ascorbic acid content and sensory flavor score of the beverage indicated that samples with destruction of ascorbic acid over 25% showed objectionable flavor. An attempt was made to predict the quality of powdered beverage by using a simulation model. A comparision between ascorbic acid values from shelflife tests and the simulation program showed a good agreement within acceptable error. This result demonstrated that quality of powdered beverage could be predicted by using a computer simulation model with a desired accuracy.

  • SMB (simulated moving bed) is a continuous chromatographic process by shifting periodically port position. Binary of mixture, Blue dextran and Orange G, was separated by SMB. These components have unique color individually, that is, Blue dextran is blue and Orange G is orange. It is easy to understand SMB process by observing the shift of color changes in SMB. These components was not adsorbed to stationary phase and isolated by difference of size exclusion factor. Mass transfer coefficient was determined by single pulse test under several flow rate conditions. Operation condition was obtained by standing wave theory and optimized for high purities in extract and raffinate streams. Experiment was performed in open loop 4 zone (2-2-2-2) SMB. There are several advantages in open loop SMB, where extract is product for high purity. It is also easy to control flow rate and monitor experimental state during operation. Experimental, extract and raffinate history is well fitted with simulation results, however, column concentration profile is a little different from simulation results. Purities were 99.5% for extract and 98.9% for raffinate and extract and raffinate yields were obtained as 98.9% and 99.4% respectively.

  • 'Arirang', an early-flowering pure white gladiolus with purple core, was released by the National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science (NIHHS) in 1998. The selection was derived from the cross between the progenies of the early flowering dark orange 'Arianne' and bright red domestic cultivars 'Hongkwang'. The breeding was conducted in 1993 and finally selected in 1998 after five (5) years (1994 to 1998) of experimentation. 'Arirang' is a cut flower with bright white color petals and purple core which exhibited early flowering and vigor without stem bending. These can be cultivated in areas or regions with strong winds during summer. 'Arirang' has a very firm growth form and sturdy branches which do not bend when planted in the open fields. Likewise, the plant had high tolerance to flooding and resistance hence could grow vigorously in open areas. It is a fast- growing plant which exhibits high corm production rate. 'Arirang' had a 10.5 cm wide flower and 140 cm plant height. During summer, the average number of days to flowering was recorded at 75 days of 'Arirang'. Top dressing must be conducted once or twice during corm production to enhance corm quality and quantity.

  • In this study, we investigated the antioxidants activity by measuring electron donating ability and ABTS radical scavenging ability of the extracts from Rutaceae fruits (citron, grapefruit, lemon, mandarin orange, orange, trifoliate) to evaluate its use as a antioxidants in foods and cosmetics. Rutaceae fruits extract were separated in two parts of whole fruit (pulp, pulp fegment membrane, peel) and peel, dried, and then extracted with 70% ethanol. As a result of comparing the antioxidant effect at the concentration of 10,000 ㎍/mL, the electron donating ability was higher in the dried lemon peel extract (DLPE, 88.15%) and the dried citron whole fruit extract (DCWE, 80.44%), and the ABTS radical scavenging ability was highest in lemon peel and dried peel extract at 94.85% (FLPE) and 92.83% (DLPE). In conclusion, it was confirmed that lemon showed the highest antioxidant effect among the Rutaceae fruits(citron, grapefruit, lemon, mandarin orange, orange, trifoliate), and it was confirmed that the dried peel extract had a significant effect. Therefore it is considered that the dried lemon peel extract has the potential to be used as a natural antioxidant material in food and cosmetics.

  • This study investigated the Antimicrobial activity of Rutaceae fruit ethanol extracts against microorganisms-induced skin inflammation in cosmetic materials. Rutaceae fruits were separated in two parts of whole fruit (pulp, pulp fegment membrane, peel) and peel, and extracted with 70% ehtanol. The results demonstrated that Rutaceae fruit ethanol extracts showed antimicrobial activity in 5 strains except Staphylococcus aureus. In particular, the antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis was the best in fresh lemons whole fruit. The antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli was shown only in fresh lemon peel and fresh trifoliate peel. Additionally, antimicrobial activity against Propionibacterium acnes was shown only in the dried lemon peel. In the results of antimicrobial activity against Pityrosporum ovale, in the case of fresh fruits, citron whole fruits showed the highest effect, followed by lemon whole fruits and mandarin orange peel. And in the case of dried fruits, orange peel showed the highest effect, followed by trifoliate peel, mandarin orange peel and lemon peel. Therefore, it is considered that lemon, which shows antimicrobial activity against all skin inflammation-causing microorganisms, can be used as a natural material for improving skin inflammation in cosmetics.
