  • The H.264/AVC has been designed to use 9 directional intra prediction modes for removing spatial redundancy. It also employs high correlation between neighbouring block modes in sending mode information. For indication of the mode, smaller bits are assigned for higher probable modes and are compressed by predicting the mode with minimum value between two prediction modes of neighboring two blocks. In this paper, we calculated the statistical probability of prediction modes of the current block to exploit the correlation among the modes of neighboring two blocks with several test video sequences. Then, we made the probable prediction table that lists 5 most probable candidate modes for all possible combinatorial modes of upper and left blocks. By using this probability table, one of 5 higher probable candidate modes is selected based on RD-optimization to reduce computational complexity and determines the most probable mode for each cases for improving compression performance. The compression performance of the proposed algorithm is around 1.1%~1.50%, compared with JM14.2 and we achieved 18.46%~36.03% improvement in decoding speed.

  • In this paper, we propose an algorithm of angular mode selection for high-performance HEVC intra prediction. HEVC intra prediction is used to remove the spatial redundancy. Intra prediction has a total of 35 modes and block size of $64{\times}64$ to $4{\times}4$. Intra prediction has a high amount of calculation and operational time due to performing all 35 modes for each block size for the best cost. The angular mode algorithm proposed has a simple difference between pixels of the original image and the selected angular mode. A decision is made to select one angular mode plus planar mode and DC mode to perform the intra prediction and determine the mode with the best cost. In effect, only three modes are executed compared to the traditional 35 modes. Performance evaluation index used are BD-PSNR and BD-Bitrate. For the proposed algorithm, BD-PSNR results averagely increased by 0.035 and BD-Bitrate decreased by 0.623 relative to the HM-16.9 intra prediction. In addition, the encoding time is decreased by about 6.905%.

  • For the improvement of coding efficiency, the H.264/AYC standard uses new coding tools such as 1/4-pel-accurate motion estimation, multiple references, intra prediction, loop filter, variable block size etc. Using these coding tools, H.264/AYC has achieved significant improvements from rate-distortion point of view compared to existing standards. However, the encoder complexity was greatly increased due to these coding tools. We focus on the complexity reduction method of intra macroblock mode selection. The proposed algorithm for fast intra mode selection calculates the edge activity in transform domain, and performs fast encoding of intra frame in H.264/AYC through the fast prediction mode selection of intra4x4 and chrominance blocks. Simulation results show that the proposed method saves about 59.76% for QCIF sequences and 65.03% for CIF sequences of total encoding time, while bitrate increase and PSNR decrease are very small.

  • In this paper, we propose a new adaptive intra coding technique using 1-D and 2-D integer transforms for improving coding efficiency of H.264/AVC. Proposed technique selects the most effective transform and prediction mode for each block after processing 1-D and 2-D transforms of all prediction modes. In case of using 1-D transform, $4{\times}4$ block is divided into four $1{\times}4$ or $4{\times}1$ subblocks and then each subblock is predicted and subtracted by using the decoded subblock located at the nearest position in the direction of prediction. After prediction error subblock is processed by 1-D transform and quantization, four subblocks are merged back into original $4{\times}4$ block and then, reordered as 1-D signal by a DC biased zigzag scanning pattern according to the prediction mode. Finally, comparing the coding efficiency between bitstreams based on 1-D transform and conventional 2-D transform, prediction mode and quantized coefficients for each block are decided and corresponding quantized coefficients are transmitted. Experimental results show that the proposed adaptive technique increases 0.34dB in BD-PSNR and decreases 4.03% in BD-Bitrate on the average compared with H.264/AVC.

  • With the growing demand for multimedia services and advances in display technology, new applications for 3$\sim$D scene communication have emerged. While multi-view video of these emerging applications may provide users with more realistic scene experience, drastic increase in the bandwidth is a major problem to solve. In this paper, we propose a fast prediction mode decision algorithm which can significantly reduce complexity and time consumption of the encoding process. This is based on the object segmentation, which can effectively identify the fast moving foreground object. As the foreground object with fast motion is more likely to be encoded in the view directional prediction mode, we can properly limit the motion compensated coding for a case in point. As a result, time savings of the proposed algorithm was up to average 45% without much loss in the quality of the image sequence.

  • H.264/AVC, a recently developed video compression standard, is used for various applications because of its high coding efficiency. Variable block mode plays important role in the high coding efficiency of H.264/AVC but involves significant computations to select the optimal mode. In this paper, a fast mode decision method for H.264/AVC P slices is presented. To reduce computations for mode decision, the proposed mode decision method skips the mode decision processes for small partition modes using distortions of SKIP mode and intra16x16 mode. The experimental results show that the proposed method can reduce encoding time up to 66.41% while maintaining compression efficiency.

  • VVC uses 67 modes in intra prediction. Most probable mode (MPM) is used to reduce data for the representation of intra prediction mode. If the mode to send exists in the MPM candidate, the index of the MPM list is transmitted. If it does not exist in the MPM candidate, TBC encoding is applied. When TBC is applied in intra prediction, three are selected in order of low number mode and coded into 5 bits. The remaining modes except the mode encoded by 5 bits are encoded by 6 bits. In this paper, we examine the limitations of the TBC used in VVC intra prediction and propose an adaptive method that can encode more efficiently than conventional methods when using TBC in intra prediction. As a result, the coding efficiency of the overall coding performance is 0.01% and 0.04% in AI and RA, respectively, compared with the conventional coding method.

  • For the improvement of coding efficiency, the H.264 standard uses new coding tools such as VBS, 1/4-pel accurate ME, multiple references, intra prediction, loop filter, etc. Using these coding tools, H.264 has achieved significant improvements from rate-distortion point of view compared to existing standards. However, the encoder complexity is greatly increased due to these coding tools. We focus on the complexity reduction method of MB mode selection. Among all modes which can be selected, $8{\times}8$ and intra $4{\times}4$ mode have higher complexity than the others. So we propose the methods for reduction of the $8{\times}8$ and intra $4{\times}4$ mode complexity by using information of other modes with relatively low complexity. Simulation results show that the proposed methods save up to $54.6{\%}$ of total encoding time while keeping the average decrease about 0.012dB in PSNR.

  • JVET (Joint Video Exploration Team) which explored evolving technologies of video coding with capabilities beyond HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), released a references software codec named the Joint Exploration Model (JEM) for performance verification of coding technologies. JEM has 67 intra prediction modes that extend the 35 modes of HEVC for intra prediction. Therefore, the enhancement of the coding performance is limited due to the overhead of prediction mode coding. In this paper, we analyze the probabilities of prediction modes selections, and then we propose a more efficient intra prediction mode coding based on the results of analyzed mode occurrence. In addition, we propose a context modeling for CABAC (Context-Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Coding) of the proposed mode coding. Experimental results show that the BD-rate gain is 0.02% on the AI (All Intra) coding structure compared to JEM 7.0. We need to optimize context modeling for additional coding performance enhancement.

  • In this paper, we propose a method for dynamic selection of unrestricted motion vector(UMV) or default prediction mode(DPM) in H.263 bit stream. For this, we use the error of compensated image and the magnitude of motion vector. In the proposed strategy, the UMV mode is dynamically applied in a frame according to average magnitude of motion vector and error of compensated image. This scheme has improved the quality of image compared to the fixed mode UMV or DPM only. Number of searching points are greatly reduced when comparing to UMV The proposed method is more profitable to long video sequences having camera movement locally.
