In this study, we investigated pre-service secondary chemistry teachers' use of teacher's guide in planning lessons. Eleven pre-service teachers at a college of education in Seoul participated in this study. Textbooks and teacher's guide books including various teaching materials were provided. Pre-service teachers used teacher's guide while they planned two lessons, which were a lecture and an instruction using science teaching model. A semi-structured interview was conducted. All of the teaching-learning materials and interviews were analyzed. The analyses of the results revealed that most pre-service teachers followed each lesson presented in teacher's guide, but they did not consider the structure of the whole unit and science curriculum. There were some cases that the exemplary lesson planning in teacher's guide helped them to select science teaching model. They modified the questions of textbook activity in planning their lecture. On the other hand, they modified the activity to fit each stage of the model in planning their instruction using science teaching models. Most pre-service teachers constructed their own worksheets by applying the materials of the teacher's guide. They recognized the components of assessment by considering exemplary lesson planning from the teacher's guide, and created questions by modifying the content of textbooks and teacher's guide books including various teaching materials. However, the questions which they made were limited in context of knowledge. They evaluated that introductory questions were not of interest to students, and modified or added new materials. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

In this study, we investigated the characteristics of the individual processes of pre-service chemistry teachers in making written test items. For this, we analyzed the think-aloud processes of eight pre-service chemistry teachers while making six written test items about gas laws and their in-depth interview scripts. The characteristics of the processes were found to be divided into six categories; the lack of systemicity in planning stage for making written test items, the lack of awareness and consideration for the interrelationship between instruction and assessment, the diverse criteria in determining test item types, the difficulties in judging behavioral domains and difficulties of items in the table of specification, the limitation in using teacher's guides and misunderstanding of teacher's guides, and the limitation in point and/or content of review and differences depending on the time of review. These can provide some significant guidelines and implications in finding ways to improve pre-service chemistry teachers' ability to make written test items.

The purpose of this study is to research on the professional development of pre-service chemistry teachers in terms of personal practical knowledge(PPK), and draw a discussion for pre-chemistry teacher education. A reflective discussion through a Community of Practice(CoP) activity has been conducted with 5 pre-service chemistry teachers studying in a college of education located in Seoul. The analysis of the results reveals that 'Subject-matter knowledge' is leaning toward massive chemical contents, 'Curriculum knowledge' is below the level of selecting, analyzing, and applying curriculum materials. 'Instruction knowledge', especially the knowledge of chemistry experiment and research, is not enough to lead secondary students' scientific experiment. 'Milieu of school knowledge' is stunted in growth for the reason of communication-deficiency between a college of education and a community, and among education- related groups. 'Self-knowledge' has been diminished not only because there is a bad influence from college classmates not wanting to be a teacher, but also a lack of communication in the chemistry-education department which can make pre-teachers' belief strong. In conclusion, it is especially needed for the chemistry-education department to strengthen pre-teachers' 'Self-knowledge' in order to develop PPK. This study suggests operating 'a professional community' that has a periodic meeting with pre-service teachers, teachers, professors, community people, education practitioners, and researchers. In addition, it would be effective for increasing pre-teachers' PPK to reconsider depth and direction of 'Subject-matter knowledge', to give an opportunity to examine curriculum materials critically and reorganize them, to improve the course of chemistry experimental subject to the way of improving pre-teachers' leadership in chemistry inquiry experiment, and to raise the quality of educational service activities.
In this study, the educational effect was investigated by providing a teaching program so that pre-service chemistry teachers could apply model ignorance education to teacher training practice. The teaching program was constructed in consideration of the sensemaking concept proposed in the study of Odden & Russ and the process of teacher sensemaking proposed by Asli et al. The subjects of this study were 23 pre-service teachers in the 4th year of chemistry education department at a teacher training university in the central region of Korea. In order to form a sensemaking for the model's ignorance education, the teaching program consisted of four stages; the initial idea generation stage, cognition of model's ignorance stage in a inconsistent situation, the lesson strategy construction stage for model ignorance education, and lesson plan & practice stage during teacher training practice. In the first stage of this program, pre-service teachers' initial ideas about the Arrhenius model and Bronsted-Lowry model of acid-base reaction, and the electron transfer model of the oxidation-reduction reaction were investigated. In the second stage, inconsistant situation that cannot be explained by the knowledge of model was presented to recognize the ignorance of the model. The third stage was to develop the teaching ability of model's ignorance through textbook analysis and lesson strategy composition activities. As a final stage, during the teacher training practice, the pre-service teachers were asked to plan and practice the implementation of the model's ignorance education. Through the teaching program to form a sensemaking for ignorance education of the models, pre-service teachers had come to recognize the ignorance of the model, acquired ability to organize and execute lesson strategies reflecting model ignorance, and acquired recognition of the educational value and necessity of teaching the ignorance of models.
The purpose of this study is to develop the workshop to improve teachers' questions considering the context of discourse. Four pre-service science teachers in the fourth grade participated in the study. Pre-service science teachers participated in the workshop. The characteristics of their reflection on the question considering the context of discourse were analyzed. Pre-service science teachers considered the types of questions they learned in the workshop during the reflection. But the affective domains of students were rarely considered. Whether the students respond was considered as an important factor of reflection. The questions were evaluated based on the frequencies. A single question without context was reflected on. Various PCK elements were not considered comprehensively. Based on the results, the practical implications to develop a program for improving teacher expertise related to the questions considering the context of discourse were discussed.
In this study, we conducted a textbook analysis and a conceptual test in order to investigate misconceptions of preservice chemistry teachers in understanding motions of molecular gases. As a result, we found out that many of the general chemistry textbooks not only introduce motions of molecular gases by explaining basic conceptions and using simple models, but also omit the explanation on center of mass when dealing with rotational motion. The physical chemistry textbooks, however, mainly approach motions of molecular gases in terms of spectroscopy and use various models to explain more intensified concepts, referring the center of mass in rotational motions. Meanwhile, pre-service chemistry teachers' confidence and understanding in the motions of molecular gases were very low and pre-service teachers also had many misconceptions about them. We believe this is because they had a tendency to depend largely on their intuition based on the pre-conceptions and the visual materials in the textbooks.

In this study the description patterns of chemistry textbooks on the boiling point elevation phenomenon and the understanding patterns of high school students, pre-service teachers and chemistry teachers were investigated. High school chemistry II textbooks developed in the 6th and 7th national curricula were analyzed and the conception patterns of subjects on this phenomenon were categorized using a questionnaire developed for this study. The description patterns of science textbooks were classified into three: 'decreasing of surface solvent molecules', 'attraction force between solvent and solute molecules' and 'decreasing of surface solvent molecules and attraction force between solvent and solute molecules'. In the result of the conception analysis, the ratio of 'attraction force between solvent and solute molecules' was high among students, pre-service teachers, and chemistry teachers. There was a propensity that they would like to explain the boiling point elevation in terms of enthalpy rather than entropy, and in order to analyze this propensity, follow-up interviews were carried out.
This study was designed to explore pre-service secondary science teachers' understanding and views of argument-based inquiry approach. Participants were 17 pre-service secondary science teachers enrolled in chemistry curricular materials and teaching methods course for majors in the college of education at a university in Seoul. Main data sources included each student responses to an open ended survey and individual interviews. Data analyses indicated that the pre-service teachers had very limited and biased understanding on scientific inquiry at the beginning of the semester. While the pre-service teachers understood that scientific inquiry should be an essential component of science teaching, a few pre-service teachers mentioned 'argumentation' or 'discussions' when they defined what scientific inquiry is. The majority of the pre-service teachers mentioned that science should be taught through scientific inquiry since science is inquiry itself. However, the pre-service teachers expressed several potential barriers and their concerns on implementing argumentation in scientific inquiry. While they concerned about students' lack of participation at the beginning of the semester, they concerned more about the teachers' ability of leading student argumentation at the end of the semester.
The goal of this study is to investigate pre-service chemistry teachers’ understanding of the boiling process of a liquid mixture. We surveyed 65 students in the chemistry program of the College of Education about the boiling point of a 50%(by mole) ethanol aqueous solution and the temperature changes during heating. We then interviewed 9 of these students. According to the survey results, the percent of the pre-service teachers who thought that the boiling point of the ethanol solution would be ‘between the boiling points of ethanol and water (78-100 ℃)’ and ‘the same as that of ethanol’ were 52.3% and 35.4%, respectively. The majority of those who stated the former explained that the boiling point of the ethanol solution increased due to the effects of attraction or blocking by water molecules. Most of those who believed the latter explained that physical properties such as the boiling point would not be changed by the addition of water. With regard to the temperature change during heating, 69.2% of the teachers thought that the temperature would increase gradually while boiling, which some thought resulted from the increasing amount of water in the solution as the ethanol boiled off. Others thought that two temperature plateaus would be observed as each component of the liquid mixture underwent phase transition at its specific boiling point. When asked about the particle model of the gas phase during the boiling and evaporation process, some students drew both ethanol and water during evaporation but only ethanol when boiling. We discussed several alternative concepts of pre-service chemistry teachers about the boiling process of liquid mixtures and ways to improve their understanding.
We investigated the understanding of pre-service science teacher about the chemistry concept of middle school curriculum using some items in National Assessment of Educational Achievement and analyzed the result according to background variables of pre-service science teacher. The result was that there were some pre-service science teachers who select incorrect answer at all items, pre-service science teachers don't fully understand the concept needed to solve item. And the percentage of correct answer at some items was low regardless of selection of chemistry as an elective subject at CSAT(College Scholastic Ability Test). We found some facts through the depth interviews to find the cause of the result. First, the misconception acquired in middle school days is tend not to change until college student. Second, the formation of misconception is affected by the study habit with which solve problem by simple calculation and memory without essential understanding. Third, the study habit with which solve problem by simple calculation and memory without essential understanding could not replace misconceptions acquired in middle school days with scientific concept regardless of selection of chemistry as an elective subject at CSAT.
