  • The purpose of this paper is to develop an OLAP (online analytical processing) database system that supports the SMBA (Small and medium Business Administration) policy funding. A heterogeneous dimension schema will be central in staged support of policy funds. In this paper, therefore, we designed the FREQUENCY dimension table which has a heterogeneous dimension schema structure. In this paper, we made a model of measuring SME (small and medium-sized enterprise) size first. The model is composed of six determinants of firm growth such as sales, employment, own technology, the operating profit to sales ratio, the debt ratio, and the current ratio. We developed the OLAP database system by using three dimensions including the FREQUENCY dimension, and using the model of measuring SME size. Also we assessed past decisions on policy funding in the Small Business Policy Funds Support Project (2004-2007) by using the OLAP database system.

The Effect of Aggressive Order Intake on Defect of Construction Companies - Empirical Analysis Using Financial Approach - (공격적인 수주행위가 건설기업의 하자발생에 미치는 영향 - 재무적 접근을 이용한 실증분석 -)

  • This study empirically verified whether aggressive order intake affect occurrence of defects of Korean construction companies. In order to compensate for the shortage of construction costs due to aggressive low-cost orders of contractors, self-response measures such as design changes are followed, and construction defects may be induced in this process. It aims to verify relevance between aggressive order intake and defect in construction empirically using financial accounting data. As a result, it was confirmed that an abnormal increase in order volume and a deterioration in profitability such as operating margin due to aggressive order taking behavior leads to a decrease in construction quality and occurrence of defects. In addition, it was also confirmed that low construction ability and intentional changes in construction design or contract conditions after construction commences were a direct causes of defects. The results of this study can serve as an opportunity to come up with measures to prevent defects by confirming the relationship between defects in construction and deterioration of profitability due to aggressive low-cost order takings.

Determinants of Employment of Regular Workers by Industrial Type: Focused on Outsourcing (산업유형별 상용직 고용 결정요인 - 외주(Outsourcing)를 중심으로)

  • This study analyzed the determinants of employment for the regular workers in the industrial type, and the results are as follows. First, 73.2% of companies use outsourcing as of 2015, and manufacturing (83.7%) is 20% p higher than non-manufacturing (63.7%). Over the past 10 years, the rate of outsourcing increased by 88.7% in manufacturing and 44.2% in non-manufacturing. Second, as a result of estimating the determinants of employment for regular workers, the variables of labor income distribution, operating profit, sales, R & D expenditure, foreign capital ratio significantly increase the employment of regular workers, while outsourcing, capital intensity, Were estimated to significantly reduce employment. Third, as a result of subdivision of industrial type and estimation of the effect of outsourcing on employment, it decreased employment of regular workers in all types. The size of influence was the biggest decrease in 'basic material type' in manufacturing industry and 'distribution service type' in non - manufacturing industry.

A Comparative Study on the Performance of Retailers in Korea: Focus on the Growth of Non-­store e-­commerce Business (우리나라 소매업태 간의 경영성과에 관한 비교 연구 - 무점포통신판매업의 성장을 중심으로 -)

  • This study addresses the management performance of the retail industry in Korea. The Non-store e-commerce business, consisting of TV home shopping and online shopping, grew very fast during the 2000s. For roughly six years in the 2010s, the diversification of online shopping business models, intensifying competition, and the proliferation of competition accelerated the entry of offline shopping retailers. During the analysis period from 2001 to 2016, the performance of the Non-­store e-commerce business was statistically better than that of the offline shopping retail business, department stores, general retailers, and small­-sized retailers. As expected, a significant difference between performance and some of the indicators of growth and activity could be seen because of the capital and operating structure of the retail industry. In particular, the Non-store e-commerce businesses have diverse sales media and heterogeneous business models. In this study, we have presented the significance of the differences in the indicators of operating profit and inventory turnover, as well as the discussion required for managing in the future.

An Efficiency Analysis of Integrated Online and Offline Operations of Listed Retail Companies -Focusing on 28 listed retail companies in China- (상장 소매업체의 온라인·오프라인 통합 운영 효율성 분석 -중국 28개 상장 소매업체를 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the efficiency of on-off-line integrated operations of listed retailers, propose ways to identify and improve the problems of inefficient enterprises, and accelerate the integration of on-off-line. The 28 listed retail companies selected total capital, management expenses, number of employees and wage rates as input factors as of 2018 and total operating income and operating profit were selected as output indicators to analyze efficiency using DEA. The results show that the integrated enterprise has a higher overall level of operational efficiency, but it is still in a state of stagnation. The pure technical efficiency of the integrated enterprise is generally higher, and the scale efficiency is the main reason that the overall efficiency of the enterprise is not improved. This study can help retail companies adjust their development strategies of online and offline integration according to their own degree of online and offline integration. This study has limitations in explaining the change in efficiency of retailers by conducting a cross-sectional analysis using data limited to 2018. It is necessary to utilize data over the next several years to conduct a longitudinal analysis.

The Value Relevance of Advertising Activity based on R&D Intensity and Export Ratio (매출액영업이익률, 매출액성장률, 부채비율 및 기업규모를 고려하여 살펴본 광고선전활동이 기업가치에 미치는 영향 : 한국 제조업 기업을 대상으로 한 연구개발집약도 및 수출비중의 조절효과 분석)

  • This paper investigates the value relevance of advertising activity over the period from 2001 to 2009 in the listed Korean stock markets(KOSPI and KOSDAQ). In addition, this paper divide all sample firm into several subsample, based on R&D intensity and export ratio in total sales. The empirical result of this paper shows following two evidence; First, advertising intensity, which proxies for advertising activity, is significantly related to firm value at the 1% level of significance. Second, advertising activity of high R&D intensity and high export ratio sample firms has more significant value relevance than for firms with low R&D intensity and low export ratio. The empirical results suggest that moderation effect of R&D intensity and export ratio are very important factor in determining the value relevance of advertising activity.

An analysis of Financial Factors' Characteristic for Global Shipping Companies using Panel Regression Analysis (패널회귀분석을 이용한 글로벌 선사의 재무요인 특성분석에 관한 연구)

  • This study performed Panel Regression Analysis (PRA) with the debt ratio as a dependent variable and the ROE (return on equity), sales volume, current ratio, total capital, and Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) as an independent variable. According to the GLS analysis, the current ratio to liabilities ratio was negative, and for sales, the ratio of liabilities was positive. Capital totals also had a negative impact on the debt ratio. However, ROE, unlike the hypothesis, had negative effects on the liability ratio, and the SCFI index was not significant. As implications of this research, the company confirmed that its sales increased as the debt ratio of global shipping companies rose, achieving economies of scale. However, it was confirmed that the actual size of the economy through the injection of other capital would help increase sales but not affect net profit. Shipping companies should expand their business power and secure large container vessels to secure credibility of shippers. In the future research, an analysis considering exchange rate, global economic growth rate, and manufacturing production index is needed.

A Study on the Effect of Financial Ratios on the Ratio of Revenue to R&D Investment in Startups with KRW 100 Billion in Revenue (벤처 천억 기업에서 재무비율이 매출액R&D투자비율에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • Lately, countries around the world have been focusing their efforts on shifting from conventional industries to innovative-technology-based industries, and committing their competencies to growing startups as an important next-generation industry that will lead national competitiveness. However, there are inadequacies in studies and methods that analyze research and development (R&D) investment and startup performance from a technology perspective, which is an innate nature of startups. This study analyzed the correlation between a startup's R&D investment and its performance. More specifically, this study performed a correlation analysis and a panel analysis on startups that reached KRW 100 billion in revenue; these analyses were not applied in previous studies. The following are the findings: first, the R&D investment percentage of startups located in other regions was relatively higher than that of those in the Seoul metropolitan area, and second, when a startup's operating margin and net profit margin were high, its R&D investment percentage tended to go higher. In conclusion, this study identified that R&D performance resulting from R&D investment was a core competency factor in the success of a startup.

The impact of technology acquisition strategy on firm performance in Korean Medium size Enterprises (중견기업의 기술획득전략이 성과에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of study is to promote the development of medium size enterprises(MSE) by analyzing the causal relationship between technology acquisition strategy and firms' performance. In this study, we use the number of intellectual property, sales growth rates, and return on sales as proxy variables of technological and financial performances. This study includes internal R&D investment, cooperative R&D with academy, foreign technologies transferred, and their interaction effects as the independent variables. The results of study are as follows. Frist, R&D Investment, Foreign Technologies Transferred and their interaction effects are positively influence on technological performance. Second, Cooperative R&D with academy and the interaction effects of R&D Investment and Cooperative R&D with academy are negative influence on technological performance. On the other hand, all of the main independent variables and the interaction effects have non-significant relationships with financial performances. These results imply that technological innovation efforts of MSEs do not effectively increase their financial performances. Furthermore, technological supports of government and academy on MSEs' innovation do not effectively increase their innovation outputs. Finally, this study discussed its theoretical and practical implications and the limitations of the study.

A Study on the Changes in Korean Ocean Carriers' Financial Ratios and Profitability Before and After the Bankruptcy of the H-Line Carrier (H선사 파산전후 국적외항선사의 재무비율 차이분석과 영향요인 연구)

  • This study conducts differential analysis on the financial positions of Korean shipping companies before and after the bankruptcy of the H carrier, looking specifically at their financial ratios, profit and loss patterns, and other factors related to their financial operation. Firstly, it was discovered that major measures of financial health, such as average assets per carrier, were not affected by the bankruptcy of the H carrier. However, despite this, most carriers experienced large changes in profits and losses, with total sales and shipping revenues averaging 424.5 billion won and 381.7 billion won respectively before the bankruptcy, but falling by half to 252.1 billion won and 234.6 billion won after the bankruptcy. Additionally, charter revenues and expenses also dropped by more than half. EBIT/sales and pre-tax revenue margins were also heavily affected after the bankruptcy, with both figures averaging 8% and 3% respectively before the bankruptcy, but falling into the negative range at -2% and -8% post-bankruptcy, resulting in significant deterioration in operational profitability. The study concludes that there is an urgent need to establish a global sales network, improve cost structures, and consistently secure stable cargo in order to increase Korean carriers' profitability. Of all financial measures, liquidity and total asset efficiency were identified as the most severely-impacted by the H carrier bankruptcy, thereby requiring the most pressing policy addressing.
