  • In this paper, we propose a new digital image stabilization scheme based on the bit-plane matching. In the proposed algorithm, the conventional motion estimation algorithms are applied to the binary images extracted from the bit-plane images. It is shown that the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm can be significantly reduced by replacing the arithmetic calculations with the binary Boolean functions, while the accuracy of motion estimation is maintained. Furthermore, an adaptive algorithm for selecting a bit-plane in consideration of changes in external illumination can provide the robustness of the proposed algorithm. We compared the proposed algorithm with existing algorithms using root mean square error (RMSE) on the basis of the brute-force method, and proved experimentally that the proposed method detects the camera motion more accurately than existing algorithms. In addition, the proposed algorithm performs digital image stabilization with less computation.

  • Electronic Image Stabilization(EIS) is widely used as a technique for correcting a shake of an image. The case requiring the EIS function has been increased in high magnification thermal image observation on portable military equipment. Projection Algorithm(PA) for EIS is easy to implement but its performance is sensitive to the projection area. Especially, projection profiles of thermal image have very modest change and are difficult to extract image shifts between frames. In this paper, we proposed algorithm to extract a feature image for the thermal image and compared Block Matching Algorithm(BMA) with PA using our proposed feature image. When using our proposed feature image, BMA was simply implemented using FPGA's internal small memory. And we were able to obtain 30 % PSNR improved results compared to PA.

  • This paper proposes a new algorithm for flicker reduction. Flicker is defined as unwanted luminance fluctuation in the image sequences. As the flicker degrades the performance of motion estimation or segmentation of the objects, it should be corrected before further processing. In this paper, we model the flicker effects as a linear system with gain and offset parameter and propose the new algorithm for flicker reduction. The proposed algorithm considers gain and offset parameter separately, and stabilizes the luminance fluctuation based on these parameters. We show the performance of the proposed method by testing on the sequence with artificially added luminance flicker and real sequence with object motion.

  • Due to light condition or shadow around camera, acquired image sequence is often degraded by intensity fluctuation. This artifact is called luminance flicker. As the luminance flicker corrupts the performance of motion estimation or object detection, it should be corrected before further processing. In this paper, we analyze the flicker generation model and propose the new algorithm for flicker reduction. The proposed algorithm considers gain and offset parameter separately, and stabilizes the luminance fluctuation based on these parameters. We show the performance of the proposed method by testing on the sequence with artificially added luminance flicker and real sequence with object motion.

  • In the image captured by the camera in a moving vehicle, there exist various motions due to the change of background, motion of objects in the image that make difficult to extract a pure vibrational motion by the camera. In this paper, we suggest an image stabilization with the elimination of various motion components based on the classification of motions in the image by their characteristics. After the elimination of various local motions, images are compensated and stabilized with the global motion caused by the camera. Also, we suggest an accurate and fast image stabilization by excluding regions of little information based on block differences and edge densities.

  • This paper presents an autonomous target tracking approach and technique for transmitting ground control station image periodically for an unmanned aerial vehicle using onboard gimbaled(pan-tilt) camera system. The miniature rotary UAV which was used in this study has a small, high-performance camera, improved target acquisition technique, and autonomous target tracking algorithm. Also in order to stabilize real-time image sequences, image stabilization algorithm was adopted. Finally the target tracking performance was verified through a real flight test.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient shaking correction techniques for a moving vehicle image stabilization. The proposed shaking correction techniques was calculated cumulative histogram for the conversion and the separating information via color separation of video image frame of the input received. And it were to matching the histogram for match the color information as compensation result of the shaking vehicle video imaging. In this paper, the proposed the shaking correction techniques was obtained to the restoration result when compared to the existing shaking correction techniques that the smallest noise and better the naturalness of image through stabilization of luminance level and color level. Also, the imaging stabilization method was demonstrated the efficiency compared to other methods through to the real-time processing without the use of the memory.
