  • Korea's first X-band SAR satellite KOMPSAT-5 has been launched in 2013, so the research related to the X-band SAR satellite image is required to increase the utilization of KOMPSAT-5. In this study, we generated a DEM(Digital Elevation Model) using X-band SAR satellite images based on three methods which are InSAR, radargrammetry and RPC(Rational Polynomial Coefficients), and evaluated the performance of each methods. The four stripmap mode TerraSAR-X images taken in Daejeon were used to generate DEM, and accuracy was evaluated using DEM by IKONOS RPC. As results, DEM produced by the InSAR showed the highest accuracy. Also, we knew that RPC could be effective method if you want to create a large area DEM which contains the various elevation.

  • This paper describes the system for evaluating the sea wave informations such as wave direction and wave length in real time, by using image data obtained from the marine X-band radar. We proposed here a method for automatic selection of the partial image data without the user's individual selection at the radar. We also discussed that the wave direction could be obtained by a 2-dimensional discrete Fourier transform algorithm. We carried some evaluation works on the algorithm through computer simulation. The obtained thirteen radar image data under several sea surface conditions were analyzed by the method described and the result was presented.

  • Landfast sea ice forms near coastlines in polar regions. Continuous monitoring of this sea ice is important, as it plays a key role in the marine ecosystem and affects the operation of nearby research stations. This study detected landfast sea ice around Jang Bogo research station in East Antarctica by stacking interferometric coherence images of Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data with 6-, 12- and 18-day temporal baselines. A total of 50 landfast sea ice maps were generated covering July 2017 to June 2018. The time series revealed regional differences in the timing of the maximum extent as well as growth rate of landfast sea ice. Overall, detecting landfast sea ice using interferometric SAR coherence seems promisingly feasible; however, limitations remain owing to low backscattering coefficients from new and smooth sea ice surfaces and subtle movements of sea ice in contact with the Campbell Glacier Tongue.

  • The use of radar rainfall for hydrological appraisal has been a challenge due to the limitations in raw data generation followed by the complex analysis needed to come up with precise data interpretation. In this study, RAIDOM (RAdar Image DigitalizatiOn Method) has been developed to convert synthetic radar CAPPI(Constant Altitude Plan Position Indicator) image data from Korea Meteorological Administration into digital format in order to come up with a more practical and useful radar image data. RAIDOM was used to examine a severe local rainstorm that occurred in July 2006 as well as two other separate events that caused heavy floods on both upper and mid parts of the HanRiver basin. A distributed model was developed based on the available radar rainfall data. The Flood Hydrograph simulation has been found consistent with actual values. The results show the potentials of RAIDOM and the distributed model as tools for flood prediction. Furthermore, these findings are expected to extend the usefulness of radar rainfall data in hydrological appraisal.

  • Synthetic Aperture Radar is an active sensor utilizing the microwaves in order to get the requested high resolution imageries day or night regardless of the weather conditions. In this paper, the architecture of a real-time system controller for the airborne small SAR system, KOrea Miniature SAR which was developed by Agency for Defense Development is proposed considering the embedded real-time environment. The main purpose of the system controller is to control the internal and the rest of subsystem within SAR system in real-time. The main characteristics of the proposed system controller were implemented using the real-time operating system and the distributed hardware architecture for the small, low weight and real-time operation. The system controller performance and real-time operation were verified and confirmed by the demo flight with the KT-1 airplane.

  • This paper was studied in two ways with respect to the information received from the video signal separation technique of PPI Scop radar device. The proposed technique consists in generating an image signal through the video signal separation and synthesis, symbol generation, the residual image signal generation process. This technology can greatly improve the operating convenience with improved ease of discrimination, screen readability for the operator in analyzing radar information. The first proposed method was constructed for high-speed FPGA-based information processing systems for high speed operation stability of the system. The second proposed method was implemented intelligent algorithms and a software algorithm function curve associated resources. This was required to meet the constraints on the radar information, analysis system. Existing radar systems have not the frame data analysis unit image. However, this study was designed to image data stored in the frame-by-frame analysis of radar images with express information MPEG4 video. Key research content is to highlight the key observations expresses the target, the object-specific monitoring information to the positive image processing algorithm and the function curve delays. For high-definition video, high-speed to implement data analysis and expressing a variety of information was applied to the ARM Processor Support in Pro ASIC3.

  • In this paper, we introduce a sparse recovery algorithm applied to a radar signal model, based on the compressive sensing(CS), for the formulation of the radar signatures, such as high-resolution range profile(HRRP) and ISAR(Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar) image. When there exits missing data in observed RCS data samples, we cannot obtain correct high-resolution radar signatures with the traditional IDFT(Inverse Discrete Fourier Transform) method. However, high-resolution radar signatures using the sparse recovery algorithm can be successfully recovered in the presence of data missing and qualities of the recovered radar signatures are nearly comparable to those of radar signatures using a complete RCS data without missing data. Therefore, the results show that the sparse recovery algorithm rather than the DFT method can be suitably applied for the reconstruction of high-resolution radar signatures, although we collect incomplete RCS data due to unwanted interferences or jamming signals.

  • Super-refraction of radar beams tends to occur primarily under a particular vertical structure of temperature and water vapor pressure profiles. A quality control process for the removal of anomalous propagation (AP) ehcoes are required because APs are easily misidentified as precipitation echoes. For this purpose, we collected X-band polarimetric radar parameters (differential reflectivity, cross-correlation coefficient, and differential phase) only including non-precipitation echoes (super-refraction and clear-sky ground echoes) and precipitation echoes, and compared the echo types regarding the relationships among radar reflectivities, polarimetric parameters, and the membership functions. We developed a removal algorithm for the non-precipitation echoes using the texture approach for the polarimetric parameters. The presented algorithm is qualitatively validated using the S-band Jindo radar in Jeollanam-do. Our algorithm shows the successful identification and removal of AP echoes.
