A Study On Camera-Detector System for Traffic Control in Korea (영상검지기 성능평가 및 분석에 관한 연구)

  • 우리나라의 경우 교통정보수집용 검지기는 루프검지기가 주종을 있으며, 지금까지 한국에서 루프검지기를 대체할 수 있는 영상 및 초단파검지기와 같은 대체검지기에 대한 평가는 단속류 보디는 연속류 상황에 대한 평가로 제한되어 왔다. 한편 최근들어 점차 고속도로를 중심으로 영상검지기의 설치개소수가 급속히 증가하고 있는 추세이다. 이 영상검지기의 경우 연속 교통류 상황의 15 분 혹은 5 분 단위의 점유율, 교통량, 속도등의 교통변수 측정정확도는 검지시스템의 요구사항을 충족하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구에서는 한국의 장래 교통관리 첨단화에 요구되는 교통자료 수집수준을 시가지도로 및 고속도로를 중심으로 파악하고, 루프검지기의 대체 검지기로서 영상검지기에 대한 성능평가 및 분석을 실시하였다.

Improvement of Representative Value through Comparison of the Reliability of point detector : focusing on traffic volume (지점검지기 신뢰도 비교를 통한 대표치 생성 개선방안 : 구간 교통량을 중심으로)

  • With the increase in image detectors, concerns about the reliability of traffic information are increasing. In this paper, we propose a method to generate reliable traffic volume using analysis of the point detector data as a representative value. Therefore, targeting expressway, we analyzed the difference in traffic volume collected by loop and image detector, and verified statistically using t-test, and finally analyzed the error rate compare to the real traffic volume. Analysis revealed that there was a statistically difference the traffic date collected by the loop detector and the image detector, in the same period, the same time, respectively. In addition, the difference between the actual traffic volume and traffic that have been collected in a loop detector was the lowest Therefore, creating a traffic volume of representative value, we proposed a method to use loop detector than the average traffic volume collected by each detector. It shows that it is more important to use one high-quality data rather than various low-quality data to produce a representative value.

Analysis on Video Image Detection System Performance by Vehicle Speed (차량 속도별 영상검지기 성능분석)

  • This paper not only tests VIDS(Video Image Detection System) performance by vehicle speed group but also suggests optimal VIDS height considering road and cost condition. The VIDS spreads over freeway and national highway and plays an important role in ITS(Intelligent Transportation Systems). As a result, speed data accuracy drops form 50kph vehicle speed and volume and occupancy data accuracy drop from 30kph. Lowest speed data accuracy is only 88%, but volume and occupancy accuracy are 75% and 77% respectively. The reason VIDS data accuracy drop by vehicle speed is gap distance decrease between vehicles. Therefore, this paper suggests $17m{\sim}21m$ for optimal VIDS height considering road and cost condition.

Individual Vehicle Level Detector Evaluation with Application of Traceability and Confidence Interval Concepts (소급성과 신뢰구간 개념을 적용한 개별차량단위 검지기 성능평가)

  • Due to the importance of vehicle detector which plays an essential role in generating real-life traffic information, maintaining detector data quality is preeminent in advanced traffic management and information systems (ATMIS). To this end, agencies periodically conduct performance tests on detectors. Detector evaluation is generally performed by comparing baseline data with corresponding detector data. Here, two important things need to be addressed; one is errors (or uncertainties) included in baseline data and the other is the confidence interval concept to represent evaluation results of sample data to corresponding ones of population. To resolve these problems, a new detector evaluation scheme is introduced and the scheme is applied to individual level detector evaluations of loop, video image, and radar detectors. The purpose of individual level evaluation is to eliminate the balancing (or cancelling-out) effects of over- and under-counts. As a consequence, the proposed scheme is proven to be effectively applied to real-world detector evaluations.

Accuracy Estimation of Video Image Detector Considering Heteroscedasticity (이분산성을 고려한 영상검지기 정확도 추정)

  • The accuracy of a Video Image Detector (VID) is gradually reduced due to various environmental and mechanical factors. However, there has been no systematic research about the decrease of VID accuracy. To maintain a proper level of VID accuracy for advanced traffic management, a regular VID calibration process needs to be introduced. However, the calibration cannot be performed frequently because of the cost. In this study, the researchers collected field data for accuracy estimation and inferred an accuracy decreasing function by using regression and considering the heteroscedasticity problem. Using the invented data collection equipment which was used for checking adaptability, some data in the field were collected and analyzed. Although the data were limited, the results are promising. More data need to be investigated in the future and this study will help to maintain the data quality for broad utilization of the data in ITS centers.

  • Image frame analysis is a conventional way of evaluating loop detector's performance. In image frame analysis, the time to evaluate performance is linearly proportional to the number of evaluated subjects, and the results can be subjective, depending on operator's personal evaluation standards and physical condition. Also, this method is often inferior in accuracy to that provided by the evaluated devices. Therefore, it is critical to develop a portable standard system which has better accuracy and more objectivity in evaluating vehicle detectors. This paper discusses function and reliability of tape-switch detector, which can be a replacement for image frame analysis, for effectively measuring traffic volume, speed, and occupancy.

A Study on the Performance Characteristics of Image Vehicle Detectors Depending on the Environment (환경에 따른 영상식 차량검지기의 성능 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The most typical method to generate traffic information is installing vehicle detectors and collecting various traffic variables. The information collection accuracy of a vehicle detector affects the reliability of the generated traffic information. The most universal vehicle detector is an image detector. This study installed a magnetic detector in the same position as an image detector and evaluated the accuracy of traffic volume and speed data depending on a variety of environment. Based on the evaluation, more errors occurred as the image detector was placed farther from the camera, whereas more errors were found to occur during the night rather than the day. Although rainfall did not affect the collection of traffic volume, it negatively affected speed data collection. Therefore, an analysis of the camera's view angle and its optimization depending on the camera installation position and height are required to enhance the currently operated image detector performance. It is judged that a separate performance evaluation criterion should be prepared in a bad weather environment.

  • A VDS data in the domestic has been used within limits to real time information such as congestion management, incident management, and route guidance service. On the other hand, a VDS data in the foreign countries had been used to various objectives such as transportation policy assessment, transportation construction evaluation, franc safety improvement, and etc. The scope and method of the study is the VDS data which was installed in the uninterrupted flow such as the freeway and the interrupted flow in a diversion route of the leeway. It has investigated and analyzed the VDS as our subject to study, study objective and study methodology for each study generally classified as 1) data collection 2) data processing 3) data store and 4) data quality section. This study has investigated and analyzed the various literatures in domestic and foreign countries regarding the VDS data. And It drew the development direction of the study which is about VDS data in domestic from now.

Video Image Detector Calibration Period Decision (영상검지기 교정주기 설정방안)

To maintain a proper level of VID accuracy for the advanced traffic management. a regular VID calibration process needs to be introduced. Because of its cost, however. the calibration cannot be performed frequently. Therefore, the method to decide the optimal calibration interval should be studied in details. This study presents two different calibration interval decision methods. Using the invented data collection equipment. some data in the field were collected and analyzed. which were used for the adaptability checking. Although the data were limited. the result is pretty promising. More data needs to be investigated later and this study will help to maintain the data quality of the ITS center.

  • 현재 사용되는 차량 검지기는 크게 두 가지 검지기가 사용되고 있다. 그 종류는 루프 검지기와 영상 검지기인데 지금 이러한 두 가지 유형은 설치 이용되고 있고, 이러한 검지기로부터 수집된 교통량, 속도 등의 실시간 교통 자료는 가공과정을 거친 후 반복/비 반복 정체관리, 돌발 상황관리, 경로안내 서비스 등 다양한 서비스에 활용하고 있으나, 이들 용도 이외에 더욱더 다양한 서비스를 지원하는 작업이 필요하며 예를 들면, 교통정책 평가, 교통사업 평가, 교통안전 증진 등의 다양한 목적으로 활용하는 서비스를 지원하는 것이어야 하겠다. 따라서 현재 이용되는 차량 검지기 시스템의 확대 설치가 이루어져야 한다. 그러나 루프 검지기와 영상 검지기는 복잡한 공사를 수반하며, 가격 또한 높고 USN 기반의 인식 기술에 비해 경제성과 경쟁력이 떨어진다. 따라서 다양한 공공/민간 교통서비스 및 u-City의 응용 서비스 기술에 필요한 USN 기반의 차량 식별/인식/속도 검지 기술의 개발이 필요하다.
