  • This paper suggests the slot wedge shape for reducing the cogging torque of a direct-drive permanent magnet synchronous generator for a bike. To consider easy coil winding, we applied a structure of open slot for the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). Because the cogging torque of PWSG with the open slot is very large, we are designed the appropriate specifications of the PMSG by selected the appropriate material of slot wedge and various slot wedge shapes. The prototype model is selected by design theory for reducing cogging torque and maximizing efficiency of PMSG. And the detailed structure design of the model was designed by the loading distribution method. The PMSG models were analyzed by finite element method. Finally, we have suggested appropriate material of slot wedges and its shape which has benefit to further reducing cogging torque and preventing decreasing of the generating power.

  • The operation of permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) type wind power generation system (WPGS) can be affected by the utility condition. Consequently, transient condition of utility should be analyzed for the safe and reliable operation of WPGS. This paper presents transient analysis results of a PMSG type WPGS using real time digital simulator (RTDS). A fault condition was applied to the transient analysis of PMSG type WPGS as the transient grid condition. The simulation results were analyzed to show the operational characteristic of PMSG type WPGS under the transient phenomenon of utility.

  • This paper presents the design and characteristics analysis of axial-flux permanent-magnet (PM) synchronous generator of two air-gap. Dual axial-flux type PM synchronous generator commonly appears in applications where the generator axial dimension is more limited than the radial dimension. The strengths of dual axial-flux generator include ; (1) by employing two air-gaps, the rotor-stator attractive forces are balanced and no net axial or thrust load appeals on the generator hearings ; (2) heat produced by the stator windings appears on the outside of the generator, making it relatively easy to remove, and so on. In this paper, the simple magnetic equivalent circuit approach is used for initial design iteration, and the finite-element method is applied to analyze the detailed characteristics. The test results of driving characteristics are presented as well. The results are very similar to predicted performance of design.

  • In order to achieve a gearless construction of the wind energy conversion system(WECS), a low-speed generator should be used. Of the various candidate machine types, radial-field, multi-pole, permanent magnet, synchronous machines may be used for low-speed applications. So, this paper deals with the design of direct-coupled, multi-pole radial field machines with permanent magnet(PM) excitation for wind power applications for cogging torque reduction through the determination of optimum pole arc/pitch ratio. On the basis of an equivalent magnetic circuit method(EMCM) and a space harmonic method(SHM), an initial design is performed considering restricted conditions. And then, a detailed design is made using a non-linear finite element analyses(FEA). Finally, test results concerning generating characteristics are given to confirm the validation of the design.

  • This paper presents the novel implementation of memetic algorithm with GA (Genetic Algorithm) and MADS (Mesh Adaptive Direct Search), which is applied for optimal design methodology of electric machine. This hybrid algorithm has been developed for obtaining the global optimum rapidly, which is effective for optimal design of electric machine with many local optima and much longer computation time. In particular, the proposed memetic algorithm has been forwarded to optimal design of direct-driven PM wind generator for maximizing the Annual Energy Production (AEP), of which design objective should be obtained by FEA (Finite Element Analysis). After all, it is shown that GA combined with MADS has contributed to reducing the computation time effectively for optimal design of PM wind generator when compared with purposely developed GA implemented with the parallel computing method.

  • In this study, the system which can make the generator's output voltage more stable by using the inverter in terms of PWM method, is designed It is one of the method reducing velocity of the wind in the process of the wind power generation. Thus, in this system, it is necessary to use a excellent current control inverter. So pulse with modulation method with a high-speed switching element is introduced to control the output current. And also, in order to get a fast response when the standard current generated by the vector control algorithm is supplied with the generator, the output control system with the fast response character and the best current control character is suggested. In this way, the result from the introduction of the control system is that a response character to the changable velocity of the wind is excellent, causing the remarkable reduction of the percentage of the harmonic and the outstanding stability of the variation of the output voltage.

  • This paper presents the development of 10 kW permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) for small hydropower plants considering flow rates and net head. The initial and detailed design are determined using a load distribution method (LDM) which is a well-known method for designing an electric machine and a 2D-FEA which is performed for more accurate analysis of PMSG. The characteristic analysis results of proposed model with straight line magnet are satisfied with the initial model with curved magnet. Finally, the analysis and the design results are confirmed by the experimental results.

  • This paper presents the mobile phone case for self-power generation and recharge for emergency calls or text messages at the discharge of a battery. If the user shakes his smart phone case, the interaction of electromagnetic coil and permanent magnet in an electric generator produces electric energy, which charges the lithium-ion battery. This enables the user to give a few calls or text messages. In addition, the vibration energy from humans walking at a frequency of 2 ~ 3Hz charges the battery. The electric generator was simulated using MAXWELL, a commercial electromagnetic analysis program, to analyze the electric power generation. Finally a prototype of the mobile phone case for self-power generation was built based on the analysis and its performance was verified.

  • In this study, a 2-W micro-gas turbine engine was designed using micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology, and analytical and experimental investigations of its potential under actual combustion conditions were performed. An ultra-micro-gas turbine contains a turbo-charger, combustor, and generator. A compressor, turbine blade, and generator coil were manufactured using MEMS technology. The shaft was supported by a precision computer numerical control machined air bearing, and a permanent magnet was attached to the end of the shaft for generation. An analysis found that the cooling effect of the air bearing and compressor was sufficient to cover the combustor heat, which was verified in an actual experiment.
