  • Chlorine has strong oxidizing power, also it is many advantages over other disinfectants such as the residual characteristic and economic feasibility. However, chlorine also has disadvantages such as creating disinfection by-products of chlorine as THMs. In particular, the most deadly disadvantage of chlorine is that it is extremely poisonous toxins about all alive lives. Disinfection with electrolysis water can be a very useful way Because you do not have to worry about chlorine's dangerous. In this study, we evaluated the potential as a disinfectant, across the evaluating disinfection effect and generating characteristic of by-products. The electrolyzed water could be obtained removal efficiencies of over 99.9 % the coliform by operating condition such as residence time, current density (voltage), the electrode gap. The residual chlorine be generated 10,000 mg/L in current density $1.0A/dm^2$ and residence time of 10 minutes. The residual chlorine concentration was possible to maintain a stable. The by-products generated by high concentration residual chlorine in the reactor such as trihalomethanes, haloaceticacid, chloralhydrate, haloacetonitrile were detected in less than a water quality standards. At the concentration of less than residual chlorine of 1 ppm, the chlorine disinfection by-products be generated most below the detection limit.

  • Concentration and speciation of trihalomethanes(THMs) and haloacetic acids(HAAs) that can be created during chlorine disinfection as disinfection by-products(DBPs) in Korean water treatment plants(WTPs) were investigated. 4 WTPs that adopted conventional water treatment processes were chosen for investigation and each represented a typical WTP on the Han, Keum, Sumjin and Nakdong Rivers. The average concentration of THMs was 26.9 ppb, and the maximum and minimum concentrations were 47.6 ppb and 11.0 ppb respectively, while the average concentration of HAAs was 25.4 ppb, and the maximum and minimum concentrations were 57.1 ppb and 9.7 ppb respectively. DBPs concentration was lower in the winter than the summer. The major species of THMs was chloroform and its average percentage was 77%, and the second highest was bromodichloromethane(20%), while the concentration of bromoform was below detection limits. The sum of dichloroacetic acid(DCAA) and trichloroacetic acid(TCAA) was 97% of $HAA_5 $ on average base. But its percentage was 90% in the Han River WTP, especially it was the lowest during the winter. On the other hand, the concentration of DCAA was higher than TCAA except during the summer.

  • Disinfection using UV irradiation has been considered to an alternative for chlorination because it does not suffer from disinfection byproducts problem. The aim of this study was to verify if UV irradiation with 368.6[nm] wavelength has a potential to be used a efficient disinfection. UV irradiation was given for 60 minutes to E. coli. which was used as a model microorganism. Remarkable decrease in number of microorganism was not observed for initial 30 minutes, however, 83.3[%] of disinfection efficiency was achieved after 30 minutes of irradiation. Inactivation constant, k was determined to 0.00868[$cm^2$]/([$mW{\cdot}s$]) using kinetic approach.

  • This study was researched for disinfection by-products (DBPs) by preozonation, prechlorination and/or postchlorination. DBPs including trihalomethanes (THMs), haloacetic acids (HAAs), halonitriles, and aldehydes were analyzed by the treatment steps of prechlorination, preozonation, sedimentation, filtration, and postchlorination comparatively. THMs were detected as $52.20{\mu}g/L$ after prechlorination and decreased during sedimentation and filtration process. The HAAs and aldehydes increased more during preozonaiton than prechlorination. However, chlorinated DBPs and aldehydes increased more by postchlorination. Chlorinated DBPs formed by preozonation increased 26% more than the chlorination process. If aldehydes were included in the total DBPs, DBPs increased up to 39% by preozonation. Preozonation could increase the removal efficiency of organic carbon during the coagulation and sedimentation processes. Ozonation might produce aldehydes that are not permitted for drinking water regulations. Also, DBPs were produced by preozonation than by chlorination. These results would bring a need for alternative disinfection studies to decrease DBPs.

  • This study was performed to investigate the disinfection efficiency and the formation characteristics of disinfection by-products(DBPs) by chlorination in the sewage effluent. The effluent was sampled from the sewage treatment plants operated in the activated sludge process and the advanced sewage process. The type of DBPs investigated were Trihalomethanes(THMs), Dichloroacetonitrile(DCAN), Chloral hydrate(CH), Dichloroacetic acid(DCAA), Trichloroacetic acid(TCAA). Major findings are as follows. First, the optimum injection concentration for chlorination in sewage effluent were found to be in the range $0.5{\sim}1.0mg\;cl_2/L$. Also, It was found that the chlorine dosage in the effluent of activated sludge process was higher than in the effluent of advanced sewage process. Second, the maximum formation concentration of THMs were $12.7{\mu}g/L$. The THMs formation reaction was finished in a short time of several seconds and chloroform was mainly formed. Also, it was found that the concentration of ammonium nitrogen is higher, the concentration of THMs is lower. Third, it was found that DCAA and TCAA were mainly formed as DBPs by disinfection.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the several factors for affecting chlorine disinfection by-products(DBPs) characteristics by reacting chlorine and organic matters in the aquatic phase. The results of this research yield the following specific conclusions: The concentration of trihalomethanes(THMs) was increased with increasing dissolved organic carbon(DOC), and a trend of THMs formation was parabolic with increasing organic matters. Formations of THMs increased straightly for the first 4 hours and the amounts of producted THMs for the 30 minutes were up to $25\sim43%$ in the entire experiment periods(168 hours). When keeping up the concentration of organic matters at constant and changing that of bromide, the quantity of formed THMs did not show distinguished difference with the reaction times. THMs were gradually increased at $4^{\circ}C$ even though a reaction phase was parabolic formation(PF) phase. However, THMs were increased rapidly in the instantaneous formation(IF) phase and then became slowdown in the PF phase between $20\sim35^{\circ}C$. THMs were gradually increased although entering in the PF phase at pH 5. However, THMswere increased rapidly in the IF phase and then became slowdown in the PF phase at pH 7 and pH 9, and these treads were much more clear at pH 9 than at pH 7.

  • Trihalomethanes (THMs) are formed as a results of the reaction of residual chlorine, used as a disinfectant in drinking water, with the organic matter in raw water. Although chlorinated and brominated THMs are the most common disinfection byproducts (DBPs) reported, iodinated THMs (I-THMs) can be formed when iodide is present in raw water. I-THMs have been usually associated with several medicinal or pharmaceutical taste and odor problems and is a potential health concern since they have been reported to be more toxic than their brominated and chlorinated analogs. Currently, there is no published standard analytical method for I-THMs in water. An automated headspace-gas chromatography/electron capture detector (GC/ECD) technique was developed for routine analysis of 10 THMs including 6 I-THMs in water samples. The optimization of the method is discussed. The limits of detection (LOD) and limits of quantification (LOQ) range from 12 ng/L to 56 ng/L and from 38 ng/L to 178 ng/L for 10 THMs, respectively. Matrix effects in river water, sea water and wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) final effluent water were investigated and it was shown that the method is suitable for the analysis of trace levels of I-THMs, in a wide range of waters. The method developed in the present study has the advantage of being rapid, simple and sensitive.

  • The purpose of this study was to find the transformation of organic matter as well as chlorine by product formation potential with ozone dosage. The removal percents of $UV_{254}$ and DOC were $23%{\sim}65%$ and $2%{\sim}15%$ and THMFP and HAAFP were $17%{\sim}52%$ and $9%{\sim}29%$ respectively at $0.5{\sim}3\;mgO_3/mgDOC$ ozone dosage. The hydrophobic and transphobic organic matter were reduced to $37%{\sim}68%$ and $35%{\sim}64%$, on the other hand the hydrophilir organic matter was increased to $40%{\sim}49%$ at $0.5{\sim}3\;mgO_3/mgDOC$ ozone dosage. The produced THMFP and HAAFP from the hydrophobic and transphilic organic matter were decreased greatly with increasing ozone dosage but these by products were increased in the hydrophilic matter. The produced THMFP and HAAFP per unit DOC were decreased and reactivity was reduced greatly with increasing crone dosage. The removal rate of THMFP per unit DOC was much higher than HAAFP by ozone treatment. The Br-THMFP per unit DOC was much more removed than chloroformFP per unit DOC with increasing ozone dosage. and The removal rate of TCAAFP per unit DOC was increased with increasing ozone dosage but TCAAFP was not affected by ozone treatment. Br-HAAFP was decreased at $1\;mgO_3/mgDOC$ ozone dosage but was not more removed above $1\;mgO_3/mgDOC$ ozone dosage. Br-HAAFP had lower removal effect than Br-THMFP by ozone treatment. The optimal ozone dosage can be determined about $1\;mgO_3/mgDOC$ by considering both disinfection by product formation and economical efficiency.
