An Outbreak of Epidemic Keratoconjunctivitis by Adenovirus Type 8 in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (신생아 중환자실에서의 아데노바이러스 8형에 의한 유행성 각결막염의 발생)

  • Purpose : Epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) caused by adenovirus is a highly contagious disease, which has been reported as outbreaks involving adults in the community. However, there has been no report on EKC outbreak by adenovirus in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in Korea. Aims of this study were to investigate the EKC outbreak by adenovirus type 8 in NICU and to confirm an effectiveness of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for diagnosis. Methods : Conjunctival swab or nasopharyngeal aspirate specimens were taken from all patients and tested by viral culture and PCR. Adenovirus serotype was determined by sequencing of PCR product of selected region of hexon gene using the virus isolates or specimens. Results : An outbreak of EKC occurred which was involving 12 preterm infants in the NICU of the Seoul National University Children's Hospital between July 12th and August 1st, 2005. Three hospital staffs and one family member of the neonate were also affected. Adenovirus was detected in 12/12 (100%), 6/11 (54.5%) by PCR and virus culture, respectively. Eleven PCR-positive neonates were identified as serotype 8 by sequencing. The first affected 4 babies have had routine ROP (retinopathy of prematurity) examinations one week ago. While previous outbreaks were sustained for a few months, the event in our unit was controlled without complications in 3 weeks. Conclusion : We analyzed the EKC outbreak by adenovirus type 8 in NICU. Adenovirus serotype was identified by PCR and sequencing with high sensitivity for the first time in Korea, so we suggest this method can be very useful for rapid diagnosis and infection control.

  • Chloropentammine chromium(III) chloride를 출발물질로 하여 여러가지의 thiocyanatoammine계 착화합물을 합성하는 실험에 있어서 그 수득량이 예상보다 매우 적고 그 염의 모액이 농적자색이라는 점으로 보아 그 모액중에 어떠한 다른 착화합물이 다량 형성되어 있으리라고 추측하여 그 분리를 시도하였다든바 미려한 적자색의 결정을 얻었다. 그리고 분석에 의하여 이 물질이 potassium hexathiocyanatochromate(III) 임을 증명하였다. Cr$^{+++}$ 의 thiocyanate 착화합물형성에 관하여는 Niel Bjerrm$^{(8)}$에 의한 보고문이 있고 또 이들의 제법으로서는 Roesler$^{(9)}$들에 의하여 Potassium chromium alum에서부터 이 물질을 만드는 방법만이 보고되어 있을뿐이다. 따라서 Chloropentammine chromium(III) chloride에서 부터 이 물질을 만드는 이 새로운 방법이 이러한 화합물들의 제법으로서 앞으로 이용될 수 있는것으로 사료한다. 제조 방법: Chloropentammine chromium(III) chloride 3g을 KSCN 24g, 빙초산 24ml및 물 48ml의 혼합수용액에 현탁시킨 혼합물을 처음에는 잘 교반하면서 가온하고 다음 완전히 용해될때까지 끊인다. 냉각시킨 다음 생성된 증황색의 침반 Thiocyanatopentammine chromium(III) thiocyanate를 여과하고 여액 65ml에 KSCN 50g을 추가하여 완전용해시킨다. 이 용액을 방냉시키면 적자색의 미려한 결정이 석출되므로 이 결정을 여과하여 ethanol로 세척하고 진공 desiccator중에서 건조시켰다. 수득량 1.2~1.3g.

  • 'Heterogeneous' vapor diffusion experiments were carried out using hen egg white Iysozyme and equine serum albumin as model proteins: droplets were equilibrated against reservoir solutiorls containing an alternative precipitant which is different from results showed that the use of polyethylene glycol as an alternative precipitant instead of NaCl or ammonium sulfate reduces equilibration rate between droplet and reservoir solution. By using the heterogeneous vapor diffusion techniqlue it is possible to control the equilibration rate by adjusting the relative amounts of ionic salts and nonionic yecipitants in reservoir solutions.

Trace metals in sediments of the Keum River (금강퇴적물 중 미량금속의 분포특성)

  • 금강 퇴적물의 지화학적 특성을 파악하기 위하여 상류에서 하류까지 21개의 표층 퇴적물을 채취하고 총금속(Al, Fe, Mn, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb) 입도별 금속 및 존재형태별 금속을 분석하였다. 또한 하천에서 연안역까지 미량금속의 공간적 변화를 보기 위해 부유물 을 일정 간격으로 채취하여 미량금속을 분석하였다. 퇴적물 중 미량 금속 함량을 평균 입도 와 밀접히 관계하여 변화하며 세립질실트 이하 부분에서 가장높은 함량을 보였고 이 높은 함량은 하천 부유물 중 금속 함량과 Mn을 제외하고 거의 유사한 수준이었다. Pb은 조립질 모래에서도 높은 함량을 보이는데 이는 조립질 모래에 많이 포함된 정장석에 의한 영향이 되고 세립질 실트에서의 높은 금속 함량은 세립한 중광물에 의한 영향이다. Mn과 Pb을 제 안한 금속들은 퇴적물 중 주로(70% 이상) 결정 격자와 관계하여 존재하는데 이는 퇴적물의 주구성 입도가 조립하여 금속이 풍부하고 세립한 중광 물에 의한 영향이 크기 때문이다. 하 천에서 염하구로 금속 함량이 급격히 감소하는데 이는 용존 $Mn^{+2}$이온이 $MnO_2$로 변화하는 산화반응과 하천구역에서의 퇴적 그리고 염하구에서 금속이 적어 진 입자(염하구 내에서 유기물 분해/용해로 만들어지거나 재부유 작요에 의한 조립질 물질) 와 하천 부유물과의 혼합작용에 의해 이루어진다.

  • An electrochemical reduction of a mixture of NiO and rare earth oxides has been conducted to increase the reduction degree of rare earth oxides. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurement was carried out to determine the electrochemical reduction behavior of the mixed oxide in molten LiCl medium. Constant voltage electrolysis was performed with various supplied charges to understand the mechanism of electrochemical reduction of the mixed oxide as a working electrode. After completion of the electrochemical reduction, crystal structure of the reaction intermediates was characterized by using an X-ray diffraction method. The results clearly demonstrate that the rare earth oxide was converted to RE-Ni intermetallics via co-reduction with NiO.

  • Suppression of nitrate accumulation in spinach and lettuce through foliar application of chitosan formula containing micronutrients is related with the increase of the nitrate reductase (NR) activity. If NR in spinach were highly expressed to increase the assimilatory activity, nitrate content could be reduced. For this, NR cDNA was cloned from the isolated mRNAs of spinach using reverse transcriptase-PCR. Nucleotide sequence of cloned spinach NR cDNA showed highly deduced amino acid sequence identity ($71{\sim}82%$) with other known plant NR genes. Only two nucleotide-base differences were observed in the cloned NR cDNA compared with that of the published spinach NR cDNA.

  • Nodular fasciitis is a benign proliferative lesion of the fibroblasts and/or myofibroblasts, generally detected in the soft tissue of the upper extremities. It has also been reported in the lower extremities, head, and neck, and rarely in the breast. Its rarity and nonspecific clinical and radiological features resemble those of malignant tumors of the breast and make the differential diagnosis and management difficult. Herein, we present a rare case of nodular fasciitis of the breast, which was initially suspected to be a phyllodes tumor.

  • In this paper the method for repair LCC evaluation of reinforced concrete structures deteriorated by chloride attack was constructed. Also, the FEM analysis for chloride ion penetration into concrete was conducted to evaluate the repair LCC which was decided by the number of repair times including early stages of construction and repair construction during the service life of structures. As a result, the number of repair times is obtained from the comparing the concentration of the chloride ion in a rebar position, and the critical chloride ion concentration of rebar corrosion through the FEM analysis considering the kind of repair materials and methods. Also, the repair LCC could be calculated by the number of repair times during the service life of structures.

Effects of Solvents and Salts on the Separation of Fructose from Glucose-Fructose Mixture (과당.포도당 혼합물로 부터 과당의 분리에 따른 염과 유기용매의 영향)

  • Separation of fructose from glucose-fructose mixture was studied by utilizing the solubility differences of both sugars in the mixed solvents of water and alcohols with or without the presence of NaCl and $CaCl_2$. Better separation of fructose was obtained in ethanol-water solvent than other solvent-water systems. The addition of NaCl to the ethanol-water solvent system improved the separation factor based on the relative composition of two sugars in the supernatant by twice. The change in feed composition from 50-50 mixture of glucose and fructose resulted in a worse separation factor. It was found in the present studies that the best separation of fructose (fructose 75%, glucose 25%) was achieved when NaCl and ethanol was slowly added to the solution containing 20% water, 40% fructose and 40% glucose to make up the final solution with the parts of ethanol 36 ml, water 4 ml, glucose 8 gm, fructose 8 gm and NaCl 0.25gm.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the service life of reinforced concrete structures for durability design. The service life has three aspects physical service life, functional service life, and social service life, and that a structures are normally demolished to end its service life when either the functional or social service life is over before the physical service life comes to end an end. In the future, it is very important that durability design shall be performed establishing design service life and the unallowable state of deterioration in the course of design service life.
