  • Recent years have witnessed a strong need for eco-friendly and energy-efficient systems owing to global environmental problems. A heat exchanger is a well-known mechanical rig that has long been used in many energy systems. The use of a heat exchanger in an airplane engine has been attempted. In this case, the heat exchanger should be redesigned to be compact, lightweight, and highly reliable, and the issue of mechanical integrity gains importance. Therefore, in this study, we proposed a method for evaluating the mechanical integrity of a tube-type heat exchanger. A U-shaped single tube was used as an example, and its behavior and stress distribution were studied using fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis.

  • In this paper, warpage magnitude and shape of printed-circuit board in case that properties of core and thickness of solder resist are varied are investigated. The cause of warpage is coefficient of thermal expansion differences of stacked materials. Therefore, we need small difference of coefficient of thermal expansion that laminated material, and need to decrease asymmetric of top side and bottom side in structure shape. Also, we can control occurrence of warpage heightening hardness of core in laminated material. Composite material that make core are exploited in connection with the structural bending twisting coupling resulting from directional properties of fiber reinforced composite materials and from ply stacking sequence. If we use such characteristic, we can control warpage with change of material properties. In this paper, warpage of two layer stacked chip scale package is investigated, and evaluate improvement result using an experiment and finite element method tool.

  • This study proves the causes of cylinder and piston jam by scratches which is the fatal problem of hydraulic breaker through the thermal analysis and thermal-structural coupled field analysis. The trouble from the scratch is a complex problem which can be caused by manufacturing process (this is an internal factor) and the users mistake or contamination in the hydraulic circuit (these are an external factor). Hence, it's not easy to investigate the causes, also hard to prevent the recurrence. In this reason, hydraulic breaker manufacturers are trying to improve the manufacturing process such as machining, heat treatment, grinding, cleaning, also to prevent the contamination in hydraulic circuit and to remove the remains. It's being managed thoroughly by manufacturers. This study shows the effect of the temperature rise by the frictional heat generated when the piston hits the tool on the hydraulic oil while the hydraulic breaker is operating, also the temperature distribution when it starts to affect main components of hydraulic breaker. The stress and the amount of deformation also could be found through thermal-structural coupled field analysis. It proved that the stress and deformation are proportionally increased according to the temperature rise in hit area, and it affects the cylinder and the viscosity of hydraulic oil inside the cylinder when it heats up beyond the certain temperature.

  • In this paper, the standard fire resistance test under load and associated numerical study were carried out to evaluate the fire resistance of unprotected partially encased beams and slimfloor beams. The temperature evolution and the deflection increase of the composite beam specimens were investigated and the effects of the key behavioral parameters including the load ratio, the reinforcement, and the fire exposure were analyzed. The test results showed that the temperature rise of the partially encased beams and slimfloor beams is considerably slow compared to the conventional H-shape composite beams. Up to at least 90 minutes, the reinforcements in the partially encased composite beams maintained below the temperature at which the cold steel strength is sustained. Unprotected partially encased beams and slimfloor beams in the experimental program achieved the fire resistance more than 2 hours according to the limiting deflection criteria. This implies that unprotected partially encased beams and slimfloor beams can be very promising alternatives to enhancing the fire resistance of steel beams. This study also conducted the fully coupled thermal-stress analysis by using the commercial code ABAQUS to the thermal and structural behaviour of composite beams in fire. The numerical predictions provide acceptable correlations with the experimental results.

  • This study numerically investigates the characteristics of chemical reactions and thermal deformation in a steam reformer. These phenomena are significantly affected by the high-temperature burner gas and the process gas conditions. Because the high temperature of the burner gas ranges from 800 to 1000 K, the reformer tubes undergo substantial thermal deformation, eventually resulting in structural failure. Thus, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of the reaction and thermal deformation under the operating conditions to evaluate the reformer tubes for sustainable, stable operation. Extensive numerical simulations were carried out using commercial CFD code (ANSYS FLUENT/MECHANICA Ver. 13.0) while considering three-dimensional turbulent flows and combined heat transfer including conduction, convection, and radiation. Structural analysis considering conjugated heat transfer between solid tubes and fluid flows was conducted using the Fluid-Solid Interaction (FSI) method. The results show that when the injection temperature of the process gas and burner gas decreased, the hydrogen production rate decreased significantly, and thermal deformation decreased by at least 15 to 20%.
