An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of a tube row, a fin pitch and an inlet humidity on air-side heat and mass transfer performance of louvered fin-tube heat exchangers under wet conditions. Experimental conditions were varied by three fin pitches, two rows, two inlet relative humidities. Experimental results showed that the heat transfer performance decreased and the friction increased with the decrease of fin pitch, for 2 row heat exchanger. The effect of fin pitch on heat transfer performance was negligible with 3 row heat exchanger. The changes in relative humidity was not affected heat transfer and friction. However, the mass transfer performance was slightly decreased with the increase of relative humidity and with the decrease of fin pitch. The mass transfer performance of the louvered fin-tube heat exchanger decreased with the decrease of the fin pitch and was different according to the number of tube row.

CRUD (chalk river unidentified deposits) is a porous material deposited on the surface of nuclear fuel during nuclear power plant operation. The CRUD is composed of metal oxides, such as iron, nickel, and chromium. It is essential to investigate the effects of the CRUD layer on the wall heat transfer between the nuclear fuel surface and the coolant in the event of a nuclear accident. CRUD only negatively affects the temperature of the nuclear fuel due to heat resistance because the effects of the CRUD layer on two-phase boiling heat transfer are not considered. In this study, the physical property models for the porous CRUD layer were developed and implemented into the SPACE code. The effects of boiling heat transfer models on the peak cladding temperature and quenching were investigated by simulating a reflood experiment. The calculation results showed some positive effects of the CRUD layer.

Naphthalene sublimation technique is employed to investigate the mass transfer processes from a square cylinder at various Reynolds numbers and various angles of attack. Distribution of the local mass transfer coefficients on each face of the cylinder changes dramatically with the angle of attack. Such variation of local mass transfer rates closely connected with the complex flow phenomena such as stagnation, acceleration, separation, reattachment and vortex shedding. The average Sherwood number has a minimum value at 12.deg.-13.deg., and a maximum value at a=20.deg.-25.deg. A comparison of present mass transfer measurement with other heat transfer measurements, using the heat/mass transfer analogy, shows good agreement in average transfer rates, same trend but notable differences in local values. Therefore, naphthalene sublimation technique can be adopted to explore heat transfer processes in the complex flow situations, which is considered to be hardly possible with the conventional heat transfer measurements.

An experimental study of jet impingement on aluminum foam mounted on the surface with constant heat flux is conducted with the presentation of the heat transfer rate measured when jet impinges normally to a flat plate. Effects of pore density, foam thickness and Reynolds number on the heat transfer are analyzed. Experimental results show that the significant enhancement in Nu is obtained when the aluminum foam is mounted on the heated plate and that the increase in the heat transfer due to the porous material insertion is dominated by both the increase in the heat transfer area and the decrease in the momentum flux resulted from the pressure drop.
The effects of top and bottom lids on the natural convection heat transfer phenomena inside vertical cylinders were investigated experimentally for $Ra_{Lw}$ from $9.26{\times}10^9$ to $7.74{\times}10^{12}$. Using the concept of analogy between heat and mass transfer, a cupric acid-copper sulfate electroplating system was employed as mass transfer experiments replacing heat transfer experiments. The natural convection heat transfer of both-open cylinders in laminar and turbulent flows was in good agreement with the existing heat transfer correlations developed for vertical plates. The effects of top and bottom lids on the heat transfer rates were very similar to the studies of Krysa et al. and Sedahmed et al. and Chung et al. With the copper lids, the bottom-closed cavity showed the highest heat transfer rates and then followed both-closed, top-closed, both-open ones in both laminar and turbulent flows. However with the acryl lids, the similar trends were observed except that the heat transfer rates for both-open were higher than top-closed one. The use of the copper lids increased the heat transfer rates compared to the acryl lids due to the hydrodynamic interaction of the flows developed for the different heated faces. This study extended the ranges of flow conditions of the existing literatures and proposed the empirical correlations.

In this study, by varying flow patterns, which is one of the hydraulic factors of FAC, a strategy to reduce pipe wall thinning by mass transfer has been investigated. A similarity between heat transfer and mass transfer was verified via theoretical analysis, and local convective heat transfer coefficients were analyzed using a commercial numerical analysis program. When ribs were installed inside and outside of the internal surface in the straight section of the pipe, the maximum local heat transfer coefficient was shown to decrease substantially by up to 24.9% compared to the basic flow depending on the position and shape of ribs. If a guide vein was inserted in the pipe elbow, the maximum local heat transfer coefficient decreased by up to 26.7% compared to the basic flow depending on the internal surface area of the pipe by the guide vein.

Natural convection heat transfers on inclined flat plates were measured for Grashof numbers of $8.06{\times}10^7$ and $3.45{\times}10^9$ by using a copper sulfate electroplating system. The inclinations of the plates were varied from upward-facing horizontal to downward-facing horizontal. Test results for the downward-facing plate agree well with the existing theory that the Nusselt number can be calculated by replacing gravitational acceleration, g with g $cos{\theta}$ in the heat transfer correlation for the vertical plate. The natural convection flows for the upward-facing plate follow two distinct flow regimes: boundary layer regime and flow separation regime. The copper plating pattern for the upward-facing plates clearly reveals the flow separation points.
