  • The development of a compact and high performance MWIR thermal imaging sensor based on the SOFRADIR 320${\times}$240 element IRCCD detector is described. The sensor has 20 magnification zoom optics with the maximum 40$^{\circ}$${\times}$30$^{\circ}$ of super wide field of view and 7.6 cycles/mrad of resolving power with the operation of attached micro-scanning system. In order to correct nonuniformities of detector arrays, we have proposed a multi-point correction method using defocusing of the optics and we have acquired the highest quality images. The MRTD of our system shows good results below 0.05K at spatial frequency 1 cycles/mrad at narrow field of view. Experimental data and obtained performances are presented and discussed.

  • Purpose: To design applied anamorphic lens that focal length ratio is 3:1 optical system to improve detecting distance. Methods: We defined a boundary condition as $50^{\circ}{\sim}60^{\circ}$ for viewing angle, horizontal direction 36mm, vertical direction 12 mm for focal length, f-number 4, $15{\mu}m{\times}15{\mu}m$ for pixel size and limit resolution 25% in 33l p/mm. Si, ZnS and ZnSe as a materials were used and 4.8 ${\mu}m$, 4.2 ${\mu}m$, 3.7 ${\mu}m$ as a wavelength were set. optical performance with detection distance, narcissus and athermalization in designed camera were analyzed. Results: F-number 4, y direction 12 mm and x direction 36 mm for focal length of the thermal optical system were satisfied. Total length of the system was 76 mm so that an overall volume of the system was reduced. Astigmatism and spherical aberration was within ${\pm}$0.10 which was less than 2 pixel size. Distortion was within 10% so there was no matter to use as a thermal optical camera. MTF performance for the system was over 25% from 33l p/mm to full field so it was satisfied with the boundary condition. Designed optical system was able to detect up to 2.9 km and reduce a diffused image by decreasing a narcissus value from all surfaces except the 4th surface. From sensitivity analysis, MTF resolution was increased on changing temperature with the 5th lens which was assumed as compensation. Conclusions: Designed optical system which used anamorphic lens was satisfied with boundary condition. an increasing resolution with temperature, longer detecting distance and decreasing of narcissus were verified.

  • This paper describes the design technology for a third generation thermal imaging system, which is more compact than before, using a $320\times240$ mid-IR focal plane detector. The third generation non-scanning thermal imaging system was constructed as a compact thermal imaging module as a reconnaissance, surveillance and navigation sensor for helicopter and infantry vehicles in the $1980's\sim1990's$ and now, we designed a new compact infrared camera and studied a new type of non-uniformity correction lens fer this camera.

  • This paper describes a thermal image processing algorithm for uncooled type TEC-less IR detector which is applicable to fire control system of small arms. We implemented a real-time gain and offset compensation algorithm based on polynomial approximation from the raw dataset which is acquired by two reference temperature of blackbody from various FPA(Focal Plane Array) temperature. Through the experiment, we analyzed the output characteristics of detector's raw-data and compared IR image quality to traditional non-uniformity correction method. It shows that the proposed method works well in all FPA temperature range with low residual non-uniformity.

  • In this paper, the development of an automotive thermal imaging camera providing image information for ADAS (Advanced Driver Assist System) and autonomous vehicles is described and an improved technique to enhance the details of the image is proposed. Thermal imaging cameras are used in various fields, such as the medical, industrial and military fields, for the purpose of temperature measurement and night vision. In automobiles, they are utilized for night vision systems. For their utilization in ADAS and autonomous vehicles, appropriate image resolution and enhanced detail are required for object recognition. In this study, a $640{\times}480$ resolution thermal imaging camera that can be applied to automobiles is developed and the BDE (Block-Range Detail Enhancement) technique is applied to improve the details of the image. In order to improve the image detail obtained in various driving environments, the block-range values between the target pixel and the surrounding 8 pixels are calculated and classified into 5 levels. Then, different factors are added or subtracted to obtain images with high utilization. The improved technique distinguishes the dark part of the image by the resulting temperature difference of 130mK and shows an improvement in the fine detail in both the bright and dark parts of the image. The developed thermal imaging camera using the improved detail enhancement technique is applied to a test vehicle and the results are presented.
