  • In this study, we investigated the tide-induced flow patterns near the ocean outfall of the Jeju and Bomok Wastewater Treatment Plants (WTP) in Jeju Island by using measurements of Acoustic Doppler Current Meter (ADCP) and a numerical experiment with inserting passive tracer into a regional ocean model. In late spring of 2018, the ADCP measurements showed that tidal currents dominate the flow patterns as compared to the non-tidal components in the outfall regions. According to harmonic analysis, the dominant type of tides is mixed of diurnal and semi-diurnal but predominantly semidiurnal, showing stronger oscillations in the Jeju WTP than those in the Bomok WTP. The tidal currents oscillate parallel to the isobath in both regions, but the rotating direction is different each other: an anti-clockwise direction in the Jeju WTP and a clockwise in the Bomok WTP. Of particular interest is the finding that the residual current mainly flows toward the coastline across the isobath, especially at the outfall of the Bomok WTP. Our model successfully captures the features of tidal currents observed near the outfall in both regions and indicates possibly high persistent pollutant accumulation along the coasts of Bomok.

  • Recently, great attention for environment changes of coastal regions due to climate change by the global warming has been raised. In addition, coastal environments which are very useful resources has been impacted by anthropogenic activities such as urbanization or fishery, etc. In situ measurements and remote sensing application using various platforms equipped by payloads with very diverse spectral resolution has been conducted to protect and reconstruct invaluable coastal region. In this special issue, several studies showing very interesting results of the coastal remote sensing in Korea. This special issue contains the research activities over the coastal regions in Korea has been performed by the KIOST Korea Ocean Satellite Center and academic organizations. We hope to share useful information on the various domestic coastal remote exploration activities and to contribute to develop scientific research to protect our invaluable coastal environment.

  • In August 2007, coastal upwelling occurred off the east coast of Korea, and vertical water temperature and salinity data were obtained from a real-time surface ocean buoy. Based on the time series observation data, a vertical sound velocity structure was calculated before, during, and after the occurrence of the coastal upwelling, and how the coastal upwelling affects the sound propagation and detection environment through acoustic modeling considering the horizontal scale and actual seabed topography. As a result of comparing and analyzing the low-frequency (500 Hz) sound transmission loss and the target detection range by depth using the parabolic equation model, it was analyzed that if coastal upwelling occurs, a detection gain of up to about 10 dB can be expected. In addition, through this study, it was confirmed that the characteristics of sound propagation can be greatly changed even in a short period of about 2 to 3 days before and after coastal upwelling.

  • The ecological environmental zones in coastal area, like tidal flat and salt marsh, were gradually decreased due to large scale of coastal development projects, reclamation and so on. Therefore, the development of artificial tidal flat and salt marsh has been emphasized in coastal area as mitigation concept and studies on related this background has performed. But studies on the quantitative evaluation for degree of restoration were insufficient. In this paper, as a fundamental study for evaluation of restoration on the creation of ecological environmental zones in coastal area, it was conducted that the monitoring and experiment for bio-chemical factors (bio-diversity, population and biomass of macro-benthos, survival ratio of reed, the number of heterotrophic bacteria and physico-chemical characteristics such as COD, IL, TN, TP and pH) using a in-situ pilot plant of tidal flat (Zone. P1) and salt marsh (Zone. P2), which was distinguished by content of dredged soil, in Jinudo, Nakdong estuary. From results of this study, the restoration index (RI), for evaluation concerning degree of restoration on the creation of ecological environmental zones in coastal area, was suggested and quantitative evaluation was performed using a restoration index (RI).

  • According to the statistical yearbook 2012 by Korea Coast Guard, the 69% of accidents at the sea are due to fishing boat. Accordingly, we studied cases of accident due to fishing boat, and safety supervision state and circumstance for the find out the reason and problem from the point of human, equipment, policy and VTS. As a result we hope that this study contribute to decrease of the accident due to fishing boat at the sea.
