  • The formation and structure of the shelf front in the eastern part of the Yellow Sea are studied on the basis of oceanographic data collected in August, 1982 and February, 1983. This paper also describes the distribution of planktonic organisms of the shelf front. In summer the shelf front is formed in the area ($126^{\circ}02^'E-126^{\circ}05^'E$) ca. 20 miles from the shore at the depths of 15-25 m. in winter, however, no distinct shelf front is formed. Based on the cluster analysis of surface phytoplankton the species composition shaws a discontinuous pattern in the vicinity of the shelf front in summer, 1982. A similar trend is observed in distribution of some copepod species in winter, l983.

  • Scrippsiella trochoidea is a dinoflagellate responsible for red tide in early spring in southern coastal water. Marine bacteria appear to exert critical roles on the development and decay of phytoplankton bloom in marine ecosystem. It is likely that marine bacteria, Pseudomonas spp., share some metabolic processes with S. trochoidea. To investigate interactions between S. trochoidea and Pseudomonas spp. directly, cysts of S. trochoidea isolated from the bottom mud in Masan Bay have been germinated and cultured. From the S. trochoidea cultured medium, we have isolated Pseudomonas spp., a dominant and cultured. From the S. trochoidea cultured medium, we have isolated Pseudomonas spp., a dominant species. Both of Pseudomonas spp. and S trochoidea have been simultaneously inoculated into the sterilized sea water and cultured to examine the change of fatty acids. The major fatty acids that showed increases in composition during the dispecific culture were $C_{18:0/},{\;}C_{20:5}{\;}and{\;}C_{22:5}$ in S. trochoidea, and in Pseudomonas spp. Especially, $C_{20:5}{\;}and{\;}C_{18:0}$ were increased in S. trochoidea but decreased in Pseudomonas spp. These results strongly suggest that two species share some processes in their fatty acid metabolism.

  • Two hydrographic surveys along with direct current measurements using drogues and moored current meters were conducted in Cheju Strait during April and May, 1983. The data clearly demonstrate that a branch of the Kuroshio characterized by high temperature and high salinity enters the Cheju Strait after turning around the western coast of Cheju-Do. The width of the current turning west of Cheju-Do is about 60 km and reduces to 20∼30 km in the strait, resulting in a high speed(>10 cm/s) at the western entrance and in the middle of the strait, compared with a low speed (>5 cm/s) west of Cheju-Do. The Tsushima Current water also originating from the Kuroshio shows its influence in the eastern part of the Cheju Strait. Thermohaline fronts formed between the warm current waters and the coastal waters suggest the southward extension of the Yellow Sea Coastal Water west of the Cheju Strait. A warming of the warm current waters occurs in May, while a cooling takes place in other areas. The major freshening and cooling of water take place in the middle of the Cheju Strait in May due to the intrusion of cold and low salinity water from the west of the Cheju Strait.

  • Available information on the family Gobiidae of Korea is summarized from the literatures and specimens collected during the period from 1980-1985 in the southern part of Korea. Thirty three species belonging to 23 genera were identified from 73 localities in Korea, and among them 3 species are reported for the first time from Korea with their description and illustrations: Micropercops dabryi borealis Nichols, 1930, Acentrogobius masago (Tomiyama, 1936), and Apocryptodon madurensis (Bleeker, 1849). Both Luciogobius grandis Arai and Mugilogobius abei (Jordan et Snyder) previously recorded in Korea, but not included in the list by Chong, 1977 are included in this list. Rhinogobius bedfordi is considered a junior synonym of R. brunneus. The occurrence of Acanthogobius ommaturus and Gobius caninus from Korea are open to question for lack of evident records. The family of Gobiidae of Korea includes 46 species belonging to 30 genera which are divided into four subfamilies, Eleotrinae, Gobiinae, Gobionollinae, and Tridentigerinae by Miller in 1973. A key to genera is provided together with synonymies, distributions and materials observed for the gobiid fishes of Korea.

  • A study on the concentrations of total suspended matters (TSM) and their distribution pattern was conducted off the west coast of Tae-An Peninsula during the spring season. Especially non-destructive and fine-tuned analysis for the size-distribution of suspended matters was made using SPECTREX instrument. Water masses were characterized by the typical tidal front, with vertically homogenous coastal waters and the strong thermoclines on the offshore area. Concentrations of suspended matters were generally less than 10 mg/l, but the concentrations increased up to 25 mg/l at the bottom waters and mid-depth waters. Mean particle size of the suspended matters were generally 5-6$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 8-10$\mu\textrm{m}$ for the fine-grained suspended matters and the coarse-grained suspended matters, respectively. They are considered to be composed dominantly of detrital materials. On the coastal area, landward side of tidal front, bottom sediments can be easily resuspended by the strong tidal currents, and therefore, deposition of suspended materials are thought to be rather limited. On the offshore area, however, suspended sediments mostly supplied from the northern part of the present study area near Kyunggi Bay are thought to be transported southward and/or southwestward along the mid- depth layer of strong thermocline.

  • A horizontal tow-dimensional version of POM (Princeton Ocean Model) was modified in representing the bottom friction and the open boundary conditions. To simulate the flooding and drying of intertidal flats, a wetting-and-drying scheme was incorporated into the model. The model then was applied to the Chunsu Bay and its adjacent coastal water. Only the water movement due to tides, the dominant forcing in the study area, was considered. This presents the procedure and the results of model calibration and verification for the Chunsu Bay system. The model was calibrated, using the average tidal characteristics in Tide Tables, for the amplitudes and the phases of tidal waves throughout the modeling domain. Calibration results showed that the model gave a good reproduction of tidal waves. The calibrated model was verified using the time-series measurements of surface elevation and current velocity in the summer of 1995. The model reproduced the tides currents very well. calibration and verification results demonstrated that the model is capable of reproducing the tidal dynamics in the Chunsu Bay system.

  • To clarify the role of protozooplankton in the microbial food web of Inchon coastal ecosystem, the grazing capacities and growth rates of heterotrophic flagellated (HFL) and ciliates were investigated. We measured the growth rates of bacteria, HFL, autotrophic flagellated (AFL) and ciliates using reverse flow (RF) filter set and obtained the clearance rates and ingestion rates of HFL and dilates by fluorescent labelled bacteria (FLB) method and isolation culture method from natural seawater of Inchon coastal area. The standing crops of bacteria, HFL, AFL and ciliates in this study area were 0.7∼1.5${\times}$10/SUP 6/ cells$.$ml/SUP -1/ 1,680∼2,180 cells$.$ml/SUP -1/, 1,090∼2,180 cells$.$ml, and 3,600∼5,700 cells$.$l/SUP -1/, respectively. The mean growth rates of bacteria, HFL, AFL and ciliates were 0.039 h/SUP -1/, 0.032∼0.033h/SUP -1/, 0.015∼ 0.025h/SUP -1/and 0.021h/SUP -1/, respectively. The growth rates of protozooplankton of Inchon coastal waters were relatively low. Mean grazing rate of HFL, AFL and ciliates were0.039 h/SUP -1/, 0.032∼0.033h/SUP -1/,0.015∼ 0.025h/SUP -1/and 0.021h/SUP -1/, respectively. The growth rates of protozooplankton of Inchon coastal waters were relatively low. Mean grazing rate of HFL on bacteria was 0.055h/SUP -1/. Mean grazing rates of ciliates on HFL was relatively high of 0.057 h/SUP -1/, while the grazing rate of ciliates on AFL was low of 0.019h/SUP -1/. The clearance rates and ingestion rates of HFL on bacteria were 3.6∼61.8nl$.$HFL$.$h/SUP -1/ and 6∼52 BAC. HFL$.$h/SUP -1/ respectively. FLB grazing experiment showed low values, while natural bacteria experiment showed high value meaning high grazing pressure on total bacteria. The clearance rates and ingestion rates of Tintinnopsis sp., dominant ciliates in Inchon coastal waters, were 3.2∼4.6 ul$.$CIL/SUP -1/$.$h/SUP -1/ and 5∼6 cells$.$CIL/SUP -1/$.$h/SUP -1/ respectively, showing higher values in the high tide than low tide. The ingestion rates of ciliates implies that ciliate took up 17∼20% of total nanoflagellates of Inchon coastal waters.

  • The distributions of trace metals in the East Sea were investigated during the R/V Lavrentyev cruise (July 2009) in which four transects from Russia shore to South were conducted to collect 25 surface water samples. The total dissolved concentrations of Cu and Ni were measured using ICP-MS, DRC-e. In the coastal area, their concentrations of Russia shore (Cu, 1.51; Ni, 1.82 nM) were 1.9 times for Cu and 2.0 times for Ni lower than Korea shore (Cu, 2.87; Ni, 3.71 nM). In the subregion, their concentrations of Warm region (Cu, 3.03; Ni, 2.28 nM) were higher for Cu than Cold region (Cu, 2.04; Ni, 2.28 nM). The distributions of Cu and Ni concentrations were divided by lowest level at $10^{\circ}C$ of water temperature. In this study period, the surface water temperatures of Russia shore and Japan basin were lower than $10^{\circ}C$ and them of Ulleung basin and Sakhalin shore were higher. Below $10^{\circ}C$, Cu and Ni concentrations increased when surface water temperatures decreased. Above $10^{\circ}C$, their concentrations increased with temperature, which showed highest concentrations in the Ulleung basin, directly influenced by flux from East Korean Warm Current. By comparing with other sea areas (Western Mediterranean, Atlantic), Cu concentrations in the East Sea were a little higher and Ni concentrations were lower. Particularly as the level of Cu in the offshore in the Ulleung basin were higher than in the coastal area, We can suggest that the atmospheric flux of Cu is relatively important in this area.

  • Seasonal quantitative van Veen grab sampling was conducted to characterize the composition and structure of the benthic polychaete community inhabiting the shellfish farming ground of a coastal bay system of Jiniu Bay (Korea). A total of 132 polychaete species were identified and the polychaetes accounted for about $80\%$ of overall abundance of benthic animals. There was little significant seasonal difference in densities (abundances) of polychaetes, Maximum biomass was obseued in summer (August) and minimum value was recorded in winter (February) and spring (May). Conversely, diversity and richness were lowest in summer, indicating a seasonal variability in the polychaetous community structure, The cluster analysis indicated that such a seasonal variability resulted mainly from the appearance of a few small, r-selected opportunists in spring and the tubiculous species of the family Maldanidae in summer. On the other hand, several indicator species for the organically enriched environments such as Capitelia capitata, Notoniashs Jatericeus and hmbrineris sp. showed high densities during all the study period. Density and biomass of univariate measures of community structure were significantly lower in the arkshell-farming ground of the southern area than in the non-farming sites of the bay, A similar general tendency was also found in the spatial distributions of species diversity and richness. Principal component analysis revealed the existence of different groups of benthic assemblages between the arkshell-farming ground and non-farming sites, The lack of colonization of r-selected opportunists and/or tubiculous species in the former ground seemed to contribute to the spatial differences in the composition and structure of the polychaetous communities. Although finer granulometric composition and high sulfide concentration in sediments of the arkshell-farming ground and low salinity in the northern area were likely to account for parts of the differences, other environmental variables observed were unlikely. The spatial distribution of polychaetes in Jiniu Bay may be rather closely related to the sedimentary disturbance by selection of shells for harvesting in spring.

  • This experiment was carried out to evaluate the water quality in the lower part of the Nagdong river in Korea. Three hundred and sixty water samples were collected from the 15 stations from December 1981 to November 1982 by tide(see Fig.1). Water temperature, pH, chloride ion, salinity, total coliform, fecal coliform, viable cell count and the composition of coliform were observed to evaluate the water quality. The variations of water temperature was ranged from $2.0^{\circ}C\;to\;29.5^{\circ}C$ and as mean value from $15.8^{\circ}C\;to\;18.9^{\circ}C$. The range of pH was 6.00-8.88 and 7.20-7.96 as mean value. The concentration of chloride ion from St. 1 to 5 was higher as 17.51-771 mg/l in flood tide than 13.12-264.58 mg/l in ebb tide. Specially, water quality at St.1 (Samrangjin) which located about 46 km far from Hadan was also influenced by tide. Salinities of water in flood tide were a litte higher ($11.05{\sim}31.08\%0$) than those of in ebb tide ($7.80{\sim}29.28\%0$). Total coliform MPN's ranged from 3.6/100 m/l to 460,000/100ml. The geometric mean value of the upper area (included St. $1{\sim}3$) was $259{\sim}538/100ml$, that of the middle area (included St. $4{\sim}6$) was $1,097{\sim}39,544/100ml$ for it leveled heavy contamination. Specially, in the ebb tide St. 10 was influenced by St. 6 and 7. In the upper area, the geometric mean value of fecal coliform MPN's was $109{\sim}199/100ml$ but in the area in cluded St. 5, 6 and 7 were heavily contaminated by domestic sewage, waste water from the factories area and bird's excrement. Composition of coliform was $17\%$ Escherichia coli group, $33\%$ Citrobacter freundii group, $28\%$ Enterobacter aerogenes group and $21\%$ others. Plate count of samples was varied from <30 to $3.9{\times}10^4/ml$ during the study period.
