  • The methods to improve the protection and explosion-proof performance of concrete structures include the backside reinforcement or concrete material property improvement and the addition of structural members or supports to increase the resistance performance, but they are inefficient in terms of economics and structural characteristics. This study is about the basic study on the fiber composite panel cover, and the nano-composite material and adhesive as the filler, to maximize the specific performance of each layer and the protection and explosion-proof performance as the composite panel component by improving the tensile strength, light weight, adhesion and fire-proof performances. The fiber composite panel cover (aramid-polyester ratios of 6:4 and 6.5:3.5) had a 2,348 MPa maximum tensile strength and a 1.8% maximum elongation. The filler that contained the nano-composite material and adhesive had a 4 MPa maximum tensile shear adhesive strength. In addition, the nano-composite filler was 30% lighter than the normal portland cement

  • In this paper, we analyzed the fire hazard of the ballast for fluorescent lamp used as the indoor lighting. In the result of being analyzed the ballast wire by stereo microscope, many melting points were discovered, it was impossible to judge a cause with the naked eye. In the Thermal-deteriorated ballast wire, elongation structure disappeared at above $700^{\circ}$, and it only showed the enlarged appearance of the copper particle. On the metallurgical microscope of short wire, as it was confirmed the regulation of the columnar structure and the void growth at the center of boundary-face, we found that electrical short-circuit generated. Also, it was confirmed the melted part on the analysis using SEM(scanning electron microscope). Not only CuL and Cuk line that is composition factor of copper but also OK line was observed uniformly on the spectra analysis using EDX(energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy). It means that oxygen took part in reaction at the recombination process.

  • A polymer/iodine complex film was prepared using syndiotactic poly(vinyl alcohol) (s-PVA) with number-average degree of polymerization of 900 and syndiotactic diad content of 63.1%. In comparison with atactic-PVA/iodine films, degree of polarization of the s-PVA/iodine film was improved up to over 99% although a lower transmittance was obtained. By soaking in iodine/potassium iodide aqueous solution of a lower iodine concentration and subsequent drawing by 4 times, s-PVA/iodine film of a higher transmittance and degree of polarization was produced. The degree of iodine desorption of the s-PVA/iodine film in water were very low. The crystallinity and the d-spacing and crystal size of (100) plane increased at the early stage of soaking time, however, remained constant or decreased slightly with increasing soaking time. In consequence, s-PVA/iodine complex formation took place mainly inside crystal region at the initial stage of soaking time, whereas it occurred outside crystal region or physical adsorption of iodine dominated after sufficient soaking.

  • The effect of temperature and strain rate on the deformation behavior of $\alpha$-uranium was investigated in the temperature ranged 300$^{\circ}$ to 55$0^{\circ}C$ by strain, rate change test. Strain rate sensitivity, activation volume, strain rate sensitivity exponent and dislocation velocity exponent were determined. The strain rate sensitivity exponent and dislocation velocity exponent were determined. The strain rate sensitivity exponent increases with strain below 40$0^{\circ}C$, while the exponent decreases with strain above 50$0^{\circ}C$. It is believed that the increase of strain rate sensitivity exponent with strain below 40$0^{\circ}C$ can be attributed to an increase in internal stress as a result of work hardening while decrease of the exponent with strain above 50$0^{\circ}C$ is due to predominance of thermal softening over work hardening because more slip, system are active in deformation above about 50$0^{\circ}C$.

  • The main reason of applying chlorination is to sterilize microbes existing in the drinking water treatment. But chlorination could lead to the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) by the reaction of free chlorine with humic substance in the water. Especially the DBPs including trihalomethanes (THMs), haloacetic acids (HAAs), haloacetonitriles (HANs), and haloketones (HKs) exist in the tap water. The US environmental protection agency (US EPA) defines that trihalomethanes, dichloroacetic acid, trichloroacetic acid, and dichloroacetonitrile among DBPs are probable/possible human carcinogens. US EPA suggests maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) for THMs (80$\mu$g/L) and HAAs (60$\mu$g/L) in drinking water. In Korea, THMs in drinking water has been surveyed but DBPs in general has not been studied in drinking water practically. Therefore only THMs have been regulating as criteria compounds since 1990 but neither HAAs nor HANs. Researches on HAAs are yet to be found. HAA formation potentials(HAAFPs) have not been practiced. HAAs depends on the characteristics of water sources by chlorination. In this study, HAAFPs from three distinct sources were investigated by laboratory chlorination experiments. This study was performed to measure the level of HAAs in drinking water in Seoul area. At April 1996, after collecting the raw waters from the three sites with the different properties, the water samples were chlorinated at various conditions(pH 5.5, pH 7.0 and without pH adjustment) in the state of raw water to have 0. 5mg/L of residual chlorine concentration. And the raw water, treated water, and tap water of water treatment were collected to measure the HAAs concentration. The quantitative analysis of HAAs was conducted by US EPA methods.

  • The main purpose of applying the chlorination process during water treatment is for disinfection. Research results, however, indicate that disinfection by-products including trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids, haloacetonitriles, haloketones, and chloropicrin can be produced by chlorination process. Some of these disinfection by-products are known to be potential human carcinogens. This three-year project is designed to establish a standard analysis procedure for disinfection by-products in drinking water and investigate the distribution and sources of specific disinfection by-products. The occurrence level of DBPs in drinking water was below 50$\mu\textrm{g}$/L in most cases. THMs in plant effluent accounted for 48% of all DBPs measured, whereas HAAs accounted for 24%, HANs 14%, haloketones 5%, chloral hydrate 7%, and chloropicrin 2%. Chloroform was found to be the major THMs compound (71%), followed by bromodichloromethane (21%), dibro-mochloromethane (7%), and bromoform (3%), The concentration of DBPs formed in distribution systems increased from those detected in plant effluent. Results would play an important role in exposure assessment as a part of the risk assessment process, and would give basic information for establishment of disinfection by-products reduction and management procedures.

  • With increasing population density and high-rise expansion of buildings in recent years, elevators have become to play a pivotal role in our everyday lives as most people take an elevator several times even in a day. The elevator penetration and distribution rates in Korea have increased dramatically every year, and the emergence of skyscrapers leads to accelerating the development of elevator industry. Carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRPs) exhibit better mechanical and thermal properties than steel suitable for uses as elevator wire ropes. In this paper, in order to analyze the properties of CFRPs, the tensile strength of unidirectional (UD) CFRP wire ropes was characterized and finite element analysis was conducted for bending simulation. Simulation results were compared.

  • The PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) fibers were prepared using the wet spinning processing. To improve ${\beta}$-phase crystalline which closely related piezoelectric property PVDF wet spun fibers conducted post treatment. Post treatment is consisted of heat stretching and annealing process. The heat stretching and annealing conditions were controlled by changing temperature between glass transition temperature and melting temperature. From these experimental data, the resulting crystal structure of the ${\beta}$-phase crystalline was confirmed by FT-IR and XRD experiments. From these analysis results, optimum stretching and annealing conditions of the wet spun PVDF fibers were founded to increase high ${\beta}$-phase crystalline. Furthermore results showed that thermal processing had a direct effect on modifying the crystalline microstructure and also confirmed that heat stretching and annealing could increase the degree of crystallinity and ${\beta}$-phase crystalline. Finally, piezoelectric constant ($d_{11}$) of the post heat treated PVDF fibers reinforced composite were measured to investigate the feasibility for the sensing materials.

  • We investigated the recycling method to re-plasticize cross-linked polyethylene by using supercritical methanol. The cross-linked polyethylene is successfully fragmented to thermoplasticized polyethylene with little degradation reactions in supercritical fluids. The thermo-plasticization reaction was accelerated with increase in temperature in the range from $360^{\circ}C$ to $400^{\circ}C$, resulting in decrease in crosslinking density, molecular weight and mechanical properties. However, the thermoplasticized polyethylene at $360^{\circ}C$ showed comparable tensile strength and impact strength with a raw resin of crosslinked polyethylene. Chemical structure of main chain of polyethylene was not affected by reaction condition.

  • The manufacture of high strength polyethylene(HSPE) tape yarns has been accomplished by a solid state processing(SSP) method as the compaction of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene(UHMWPE) powders and drawing of the compacted film under the melting point without any organic solvents. In this study, the characteristics of HSPE tape yarns produced by SSP which is desirable for production cost and environmental aspect were analyzed. As the results, tensile strengths of HSPE tape yarns increased with increasing the draw ratio and the fracture morphology of highly drawn HSPE tape yarns showed more fibrillar shape than the low drawn one. Interfacial shear strengths of HSPE tape yarns with vinylester resin increased by $O_2$ plasma treatment and maximum interfacial shear strength was obtained in the plasma treatment condition of 100W and 5min. In addition, mechanical properties of HSPE tape yarn reinforced composites were investigated and compared with those of the gel spun HSPE fiber reinforced composites.
