  • The optimal design and combustion analysis of the gas generator for Liquid Rocket Engine (LRE) were performed. A fuel-rich gas generator in open cycle turbopump system was designed for 101on1 in thrust with RP-1/LOx combination. The optimal design was done for maximizing specific impulse of main combustion chamber with constraints of combustion temperature and power matching in turbopump system. Results of optimal design show the dimension of length, diameter, and contraction ratio of gas generator. The configuration of the gas generator and the condition for performance which can maximize the objective function were determined and found to meet the design constraints. Also, the combustion analysis was conducted to evaluate the performance of designed chamber and injector of gas generator. And the effect of the turbulence ring was investigated on the mixing enhancement in the chamber.

  • A ground firing test for hot-fire performance evaluation according to the characteristic length($L^*$) variation of thrust chamber was carried out for the hydrazine thruster which may be employed in space launch vehicles. A scrutiny into the performance characteristics of each thruster is made in terms of thrust, specific impulse, response characteristics, and characteristic velocity at steady-state firing mode with propellant inlet pressure of 2.41 MPa (350 psia). Through the test results, it has been verified that performance of characteristic velocity and specific impulse degrades as the characteristic length deviates from that of the standard model. Thus, it is confirmed that the thrust chamber configuration of standard model was suitably designed for the requirement specified.

  • A study on swirl chamber for diesel engine is to realize lower fuel consumption and exhaust emission than the current marketing engines. Author formerly reported the performance characteristics of small IDI diesel engine with swirl chamber by changing the jet passage area and its angle, and the depth and shape of the piston top cavity. Following after the first report, in this paper, the characteristics of fuel consumption, soot emission, and exhaust gas temperature were examined and analyzed after dimension of jet passage area expanded to $70.1mm^2$ The results were that the optimum values of the jet passage area depending on the depth of the piston top cavity were different at each engine speeds and loads, and in accordance with application of engine running conditions they were able to be selected as optimum dimensions of each design parameters.

  • The similarity in internal flow of solid and hybrid rocket suggests that hybrid rocket combustion can be susceptible to instability due to vortex sheddings and their interaction. This study focuses on the evolution of interaction of vortex generated in pre-chamber with other types of vortex in the combustor and the change of combustion characteristics. Baseline and other results tested with disks show that there are five different frequency bands appeared in spectral domain. These include a frequency with thermal lag of solid fuel, vortex shedding due to obstacles such as forward, backward facing step and wall vortices near surface. The comparison of frequency behavior in the cases with disk 1 and 3 reveals that vortex shedding generated in pre-chamber can interact with other types of vortex shedding at a certain condition. The frequency of Helmholtz mode is one of candidates resulting to a resonance when it was excited by other types of oscillation even if this mode was not discernable in baseline test. This selective mechanism of resonance may explain the reason why non-linear combustion instability occurs in hybrid rocket combustion.

  • This paper includes summarization and analysis of previous research results on acoustic attenuation due to particles and flow turning in rocket motors among various damping parameters. Particle damping is the most effective mechanism in suppressing high-frequency combustion instabilities occurring in rocket combustion chambers, which is dependent on the size and the mass fraction of particles. Relatively weak attenuation by flow turning compared to particle damping depends on the geometry of propellant and a combustion chamber. Pumping driving effects need to be taken into account when realizing vorticity generation on the propellant surface. However, its driving effects become cancelled out by flow turning loss when the propellant geometry is cylindrical.

  • A cause of noise and vibration which come from a Combustion of gas heater are a combustion roar and Combustion oscillation. A character of a combustion roar is that sound pressure is distribute with broad band frequency. otherwise, The presence of combustion oscillation caused by positive Feed Back in Combustion Chamber break out a noise and vibration. Accordingly, The method that be solved a noise and vibration is to make each natural frequency different frequency. first, in order to solve problem, we control ratio of fuel and air. that is, Keep away resonance. second, in order to changing natural frequency of Combustion Chamber, We changed the shape of Economizer.

  • In order to analyze combustion characteristics of methane-oxygen diffusion flame in a model combustor, combustion experiments were carried out under various spray conditions of propellant scrutinizing combustion stability limit and flame shapes. As the propellant approached the theoretical equivalence ratio condition, a stable detached flame was observed even under high oxygen Reynolds number. And the length of the visible flame increased and the lift-off distance of the flame exhibited a tendency toward decrease. Due to the swirl effect of the propellant by the swirl-coaxial injector, a wide and short flame was produced. Thus, it may be appropriate to employ the swirl-coaxial injector in thrusters having a limited physical dimension.

  • This paper presents characteristics of combustion and exhaust gas properties according to variation of the combustion chamber for economy and emissions standards. In order to use combustion and exhaust gas properties data, it is necessary to build some data base, which use cylinder pressure sensor and emission tester. A feasibility and necessity of combustion pressure based cylinder spark timing control has been examined. So, this was obtained the coefficient of variation(COV) and the specific fuel consumption(sfc). Using the results of the test, the effects of the variable combustion chamber can be improved combustion stability and be reduced exhaust emission.

  • In this study, combustion behaviour were to analyze by comparing experimental data against predicted values. In developing pellet boiler performance, various factors such as combustion chamber shape, input air velocity, the amount of fuel, temperature, and fuel characteristics need to be analyzed. Analytical model using a numerical method is useful to overcome time and cost consuming by practical experiment. By controlling feeding rate of fuel, flue gas composition and temperature distribution obtained form experiment were compared with predicted values using FLUENT(ANSYS, Inc., Southpointe). Measurement were in good agreement with model predictions : with 0.60 % for $CO_2$ 0.73% for $O_2$ when compared with independent data sets.

  • Performance of a liquid rocket thrust chamber with regenerative cooling scheme has been numerically analyzed using in-house CFD code which can predict combustion/cooling performance and provide nozzle design parameters. This paper investigates trade-offs between combustion and cooling performance with varying amount of fuel directly injected into the chamber wall to form cooling films and mixture ratios for the peripheral injectors. Further efforts to verify/improve the simulation methodology including comparison with the firing test results are planned to make it a reliable tool to optimize the film cooling and other major design parameters.
