Lean premixed gas turbine combustors were successful in meeting current NOx emission regulations. However, these combustors have been found to be susceptible to combustion instability. In this study, general mechanisms for combustion dynamics and instabilities in lean premixed gas turbine combustors are introduced. In addition, the flame transfer functions in the combustor are experimentally determined. The inputs to the flame transfer function are the imposed velocity fluctuations of the mixture. The key results of the measurements are reviewed.

The result of design review and arrangement of a combustion chamber test facility(CTF) and a turbo-pump real propellant test facility(TPTF) is briefly described. The development/qualification tests of combustion chamber and turbo-pump for 75ton-class liquid rocket engine will be performed in CTF and TPTF. The critical design of hydraulic-pneumatic system, control and data acquisition system, test stand cell, and auxiliary facilities in CTF and TPTF was performed.

This study investigated the enhanced combustion efficiency of an "air-cooled combustion system" with single F.D. fan, and performed a numerical analysis for the operation and design conditions to increase the combustion efficiency. The combustion efficiency in an actual combustor was compared before and after the structure modification. Numerical analysis for application of a single fan revealed the difficulty of forming a turbulence for circular combustion conditions. This is because the supply ratio of combustion air supplied into 2 flow paths becomes irregular in the combustion furnace due to a change in friction force and pressure in each flow path. Subsequently, two methods of supplying air into the combustion furnace were analyzed numerically to obtain the optimal combustion conditions of an air-cooled combustion system. The first method involved injecting the preheated combustion air after a 180~360 degree rotation from the outer wall, whereas in the second method, the combustion air was injected into the combustion furnace in a tangential direction after primary heat exchange outside the combustion furnace, by applying a rotatable vane structure in the combustion furnace. Results reveal that application of a single F.D. fan to the air injection into a rotatable combustion furnace is desirable for optimization of the combustion conditions for applying a duct structure having a dual cooling wall for the cooling of the outer wall of the combustion furnace, and for maintaining perfect mixing in the combustion furnace. We therefore confirmed enhanced combustion efficiency by comparing the actual combustion efficiency before and after structure modification.
Oxy-combustion with a circulating fluidized bed (Oxy-CFBC) technology has been paid attention to cope with the climate change and fuel supply problem. In addition, Oxy-CFBC technology as one of the methods for carbon dioxide capture is an eco-friendly that can reduce air pollutants, such as $SO_2$, NO and CO through a flue gas recirculation process. The newly developed $100kW_{th}$ pilot-scale Oxy-CFBC system used for this research has been continuously utilizing to investigate oxy-combustion characteristics for various fuels, coals and biomasses to verify the possibility of fuel diversification. The anthracite is known as a low reactivity fuel due to a lot of fixed carbon and ash. Therefore, this study aims not only to improve combustion efficiency of an anthracite, but also to capture carbon dioxide. As a result, compared to air-combustion of sub-bituminous coal, oxy-combustion of anthracite could improve 2% combustion efficiency and emissions of $SO_2$, CO and NO were reduced 15%, 60% and 99%, respectively. In addition, stable operating of Oxy-CFBC could capture above 94 vol.% $CO_2$.

This study proposes the experimental methods which shows various guidelines for systematic study of surface forest fuels. The thermal characteristics of surface fire fuels such as Quercus Variabilis and Pinus Densiflora fallen leaves are measured using TGA and Oxygen Bomb Calorimeter. Both of them are common species of Korean forest. Also the combustion characteristics of surface fire fuels are analysed according to the methods which are commonly used in Pool Fire analysis. The measured parameters are gas velocity, temperature, flame height, heat release rate and mass loss rate. A system is designed to simulate the surface fire. Methods and results are shown for the application of forest fire study.

A simple Crocco's $n-{\tau}$ time delay model and linear analysis of fluid flow coupled with acoustics are combined to investigate the high frequency combustion instability in the combustion chamber of LOX/hydrocarbon engines. The partial differential equation of the velocity potential is separated into ordinary differential equations, and eigenvalues that correspond to tangential resonance modes in the cylindrical chamber are determined. A general solution is obtained by solving the differential equation in the axial direction, and boundary conditions at the injector face and nozzle entrance are applied in order to calculate the chamber admittance. Frequency analysis of the transfer function is used to evaluate the stability of system. Stability margin is determined from the system gain and phase angle for the desired frequency range of 1T mode. The chamber model with variable baffle length and configurations are also considered in order to enhance the 1T mode stability of the combustion chamber.
For a preliminary study on a thrust-throttleable Variable Flow Ducted Rocket, a gas generator and flow control valve were developed, and ground combustion tests were performed. The gas generator and flow control valve operated at the required performance level for parameters, such as heat-resistance, combustion-time, pressure, and temperature. The combustion characteristics of a fuel-rich solid propellant mixed with Boron/MgAl/AP, etc., were also analyzed. A Plunger-type flow control valve was designed to control the discharge flow area, and it was confirmed that the flow control valve was able to control the combustion gas flow rate and pressure. However, due to the reduction of the discharge flow area caused by adhesion of combustion products, the combustion pressure continuously increased. The analysis of the pressure increase is covered in Part 2 of this paper.
Hypergolic propellants, which can ignite themselves without an ignition source, are difficult to handle due to their corrosiveness and toxicity. Therefore, it is necessary to develop green hypergolic propellants with little or no toxicity. In this study, basic research on green hypergolic ignition propellants was conducted. With 95% hydrogen peroxide as an oxidizer and CNU_HGFv1 as a fuel, ignition and combustion characteristics of propellants were evaluated through a drop test, an ignition test, and a combustion test. As a result of the drop test, the ignition delay time was 9.7 ms. It was 27 ms in the ignition test, which was fast enough to be used as a propellant. As a result of the combustion test, a combustion efficiency of 95.4~98.1% was achieved at about 11.7 bar. It was confirmed that fast and stable combustion was possible without hard start or combustion instability.

To evaluate the combustion mechanism of each droplet cluster downstream of the premixed spray flame, the simultaneous time-series measurements were conducted by using optical measurement system consisting of laser tomography, multi-color integrated Cassegrain receiving optics (MICRO) and phase Doppler anemometer (PDA). Furthermore, the group combustion number of droplet cluster was estimated experimentally, and the combustion mechanism of droplet cluster was examined applying the theoretical analysis. The group combustion number, $G_c$, was experimentally estimated about all droplet cluster verified by planar images, and it was classified into the internal group combustion mode and the external group combustion mode according to the theoretical analysis. It is found that there are cases in which the group combustion number estimated experimentally for droplet cluster agree or disagree with the classification by theoretical analysis. The reason of disagreement is considered due to that the group combustion number was only estimated by the geometrical arrangement of droplets in cluster, and that the actual phenomenon is three-dimensional but the measurement system is two-dimensional.

The purpose of this study is to search the temperature-rise time conditions for adequate reforming temperature region of hydrogen generation system. And we measured theexhaust gas at the exit of that system in order to know the combustion state of hydrogen generation system's combustor. We found the optimum condition of heat supply and temperature-rise time at well burned state. And the results were nearly same when the reactants were entered to each reactors. We will further consider the effects of temperature change near the exothermic reactors and find out hydrogen yield through reforming experiment.
