  • This paper presents the resizing method of columns and beams that considers column-to-beam strength ratios to simultaneously control the initial stiffness and ductility of steel moment frames. The proposed method minimizes the top-floor displacement of a structure while satisfying the constraint conditions with respect to the total structural weight and column-to-beam strength ratios. The design variable considered in this method is the sectional area of structural members, and the sequential quadratic programming(SQP) technique is used to obtain optimal results from the problem formulation. The unit load method is applied to determine the displacement participation factor of each member for the top floor lateral displacement; based on this, the sectional area of each member undergoes a resizing process to minimize the top-floor lateral displacement. Resizing members by using the displacement participation factor of each member leads to increasing the initial stiffness of the structure. Additionally, the proposed method enables the ductility control of a structure by adjusting the column-to-beam strength ratio. The applicability of the proposed optimal drift design method is validated by applying it to the steel moment frame example. As a result, it is confirmed that the initial stiffness and ductility could be controlled by the proposed method without the repetitive structural analysis and the increment of structural weights.

  • This study was performed to verify the structural reinforcing effect of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fiber. In order to verify the structural reinforcing capacity of RPET fiber, recycled PET fiber added RC slab specimens were prepared to examine the flexural capacity while those of plain concrete and those of added with PP fiber, and the behavior of the specimens were also evaluated. The result shows that the compressive strength reduces as the fiber volume fraction increases, and the rate of reduction varies from 2% to 7%. The result of the flexural capacity shows that the ultimate capacity of plain specimens is the highest compare to those fiber reinforced specimens, but it has shown that specimens reinforced by 5% PET fiber has the highest energy absorption and the ductility index. In the application of PET fiber in slab specimens has shown that ductility capacity have increased where the ultimate capacity decreasing. That is the different tendency of beam specimens, which the ultimate capacity and the ductility of those have both shown the improvement compare to plain concrete specimens, which means the reinforcing effect of PET fiber in slab is less strong than in beam. Therefore, the application of PET fiber in slab structures as reinforcement needs the proper mix proportion of concrete and volume fraction of PET fiber with deep consideration of the structures.

  • In this study 3- and 6-story flat plate structures designed only for gravity load are retrofitted with steel plates and braces and their seismic performances are evaluated to verify the effect of seismic retrofit. According to the analysis results obtained from nonlinear static and dynamic analyses both the strength and stiffness are significantly enhanced as a result of the seismic retrofit. Especially the effect of column jacketing could be enhanced significantly when slabs were reinforced to prevent premature punching shear failure. When buckling-restrained braces are used instead of conventional braces, the structures showed more ductile behavior, especially in the 3-story structure.

  • In the current domestic and overseas standards concerning seismic design, especially on the capacity & demand spectra in the multi-story building, failure is caused more by story drift than by displacement; and the existing capacity spectrum method (CSM) does not make a close estimate of story drift because response is derived using displacement. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved CSM to estimate story drift and its direct effect on the collapse of structures, yet still maintaining the same advantage and convenience of the existing CSM about a most basic model of multi-story building: shear building. To establish its reliability, the proposed method is applied to an example model and results are then compared with those obtained through nonlinear time-history analysis.

  • Flat plate-column connections are susceptible to brittle punching shear failure, which may result in collapse of the overall structure. In the present study, a new shear reinforcement for the plate-column connection, the lattice shear reinforcement was developed. Experimental study for the lattice shear reinforcement was performed. Shear strength and ductility of the specimens reinforced with the lattice bars were compared with those of unreinforced specimens. The test results showed that the strength and ductility of the specimens with the lattice shear reinforcement were improved by 1.37 and 9.16 times those of the unreinforced specimens, respectively. These results indicates that the lattice shear reinforcement is superior in ductility to the shear stud-rail which is popular in U.S. Based on the test results, the design method for the lattice shear reinforcement was developed.

  • In this paper, fluid-structure of interaction behavior of a fluid-filled cylindrical polymer container impacted by a high speed spherical projectile was studied using ALE(Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian) method. The hydrodynamic ram phenomenon occurred by the impact projectile penetrating through the container was investigated by examining time histories of projectile velocity and fluid pressure and density. The analysis results were agreed reasonably well compared to those by experiments.

  • This paper explains a general coupling system in terms of the system parameters. impedance of a cavity or mobility of a structure. To easily access the mechanism of the structural-acoustic coupled system, a simple expression is derived. A general coupled equation is also derived of a general coupled problem constituted a flexible structure and an opening boundary in terms of vector and matrix notation, and is analyzed the coupling phenomena using the understanding acquired simple coupled system. The paper shows that the general coupled equation is expanded version of the simple coupled equation by some limiting checks. The paper also shows that the degree of coupling is proportioned to a stiffness of the acoustic system and a modal coupling coefficient, but is in inverse proportion to a mass of the structural system and the difference of the excitation frequency and resonant frequency of the acoustic or structural system.

  • To examine the interaction of the floating pontoon with a steel moment resisting frame, the static structural analysis is carried out, in which the pressure load are calculated from the forgoing fluid dynamic analysis, varying the period of wave from 3 to 15 second and for 3 cases of depth of pontoon, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5m. As results, it has shown that RAO-pitch has the linear relationship with the increase of moment of the frame and the curvature of pontoon is reversely proportional to the stiffness of pontoon. By synthesizing these results, an estimation method is proposed, which predicts the moment of frame of the different depth of pontoon based on the analysis result of an arbitrary depth of a floating pontoon. The estimation result shows considerably good agreement, compared with the analysis result.

  • The free flexural vibration of a hanged clamped-free cylindrical shell partially submerged in water with gap from bottom is investigated. The fluid is assumed to be inviscid and irrotational. The cylindrical shell is modeled by using the Rayleigh-Ritz method based on the Sanders shell theory. The kinetic energy of the fluid is derived by solving the boundary-value problem related to the fluid motion. The natural vibration characteristics of the partially submerged cylindrical shell are discussed with respect to the added virtual mass approach. In this study, experiments were carried out to confirm theoretical results. It was found that theoretical prediction is in good agreement with experimental results.
