  • Design performances of various configurations of the PEMFC/GT hybrid systems have been evaluated. Based on PEMFC adopting steam reforming, various system configurations (one ambient pressure configuration and three different pressurized configurations) were designed and their performances were compared. Their Performances are also compared with the reference PEMFC system. Influences of turbine inlet temperature, pressure ratio on the hybrid systems performance were investigated and design ranges exhibits better efficiency than the PEMFC system were presented. One of the pressurized system may have much higher efficiency than the PEMFC system, while other systems hardly provide efficiency upgrade.

  • Design analysis of the solid oxide fuel cell and gas turbine combined power system is performed considering different methods for preheating cell inlet air. The purpose of air preheating is to keep the temperature difference between cell inlet and outlet within a practical design range. Three different methods are considered such as a burner in front of the cell, a preheater in front of the cell and recirculation of the cathode exit gas. Analyses are carried out for two maximum cell temperature differences. The greater temperature difference ensures higher efficiency. The cathode exit gas recirculation exhibits better performance than other methods.

  • In this study, we investigated operating characteristics of natural gas fuel processor for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The fuel processor consists of a natural gas reformer, a water-gas shift reactor, a heat-exchanger and a burner, in which the overall integrated volume is exactly(exceptionally) small, namely, about 10L except outer insulation. The producted hydrogen is $1Nm^3/hr$ and the maximum thermal efficiency is ${\sim}76%$(low heating value) at full operating load. A compact and highly efficient $1Nm^3/hr$ class natural gas fuel processor was developed at UNISON is an advantage for application in residential PEMFCs co-generation systems.

  • In this paper, a preconverter of MCFC for an emergence electric power supplier is numerically simulated to increase the hydrogen production from natural gas (methane). Commercial code is used to simulated the porous catalyst with user subroutine to model three dominant chemical reactions which are Stream Reforming(SR), Water-Gas Shift(WGS), and Direct Stram Reforming(DSR). To get 10% fuel conversion rate in preconverter. the required external heat flux is supplied from outer wall of preconverter. The calculated results show that very nonuniform temperature distribution and chemical reaction happen near the wall of preconverter. These phenomena can be explained by the low heat conductivity of porous catalyst and the endothermic reforming reaction.

  • In this study, a computer modeling work has been performed for the power generation system using polymer electrolyte fuel cell with Aspen Plus general purpose chemical process simulator. Stoichiometric reactor module was used for the modeling of reformer for the production of hydrogen. For the modeling of the electrochemical reaction, Gibbs reactor module built-in Aspen Plus was utilized. SRK equation of state model was selected for the proper simulation of the overall fuel cell system.

  • During the past decades much attention has been paid to the desulfurization of diesel oil which is important as a source for the fuel cells to prevent the sulfur poisoning of both diesel steam reforming catalyst and electrode of fuel cell. Although alternative desulfurization techniques have been investigated, desulfurization for ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) is still challenged. Therefore, this research focuses on the desulfurization of commercial ULSD for the application to molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC). Herein, the performances of several kinds of commercial adsorbents based on activated carbons, zeolites, and metal oxides for desulfurization of ULSD were screened. The results showed that metal oxides based materials can feasibly reduce sulfur concentration in ULSD to a level of 0.1 ppmw while activated carbons and zeolites did not reach this level at current conditions.

  • In this study, two proposals for the wall heating preconverter of an MCFC are numerically studied to resolve hot temperature generation near the wall by the low thermal conductivity of the catalyst. The numerical results show that the inserted porous cupper plates on the catalyst evidently improve heat transfer and realize more uniform reforming in the preconverter. The calculated results for the preconverter with a circumference empty space of catalyst located at center, 1/2 and 4/5 from center line are compared. The circumference empty space located at 1/2 position shows better results than other cases, but the positive effect on the uniform reforming process is less than in the case of inserted cupper porous plates on the catalyst.

  • A 5kW class SOFC cogeneration system consisted of a hot box part, a cold BOP (balance of plant) part, and a hot water reservoir. The hot box part contained a stack, a fuel reformer, a catalytic combustor, and heat exchangers. A cold BOP part was composed of blowers, pumps, a water trap, and system control units. A 5kW stack was designed to integrate 2 sub-modules. In this paper, the 5kW class SOFC system was operated using 2 short stacks connected in parallel to test the sub-module and the system. A short stack had 15 cells with $15{\times}15 cm^2$ area. When a natural gas was used, the total power was about 1.38 kW at 120A. Because the sub-modules were connected in parallel and current was loaded using a DC load, voltages of sub-modules were same and the currents were distributed according to the resistance of sub-modules. The voltage of the first stack was 11.46 V at 61A and the voltage of the second stack was 11.49V at 59A.
