Combustion and Spray Characteristics of Jet in Crossflow in High-Velocity and High-Temperature Crossflow Conditions (고온고속기류 중에 수직 분사되는 액체제트의 연소 및 분무특성)

  • A jet in a crossflow (JICF) has been extensively studied because of its wide applications in technological systems, including fuel injection into a ram-combustor. However, in the case of insufficient mixing performance of the liquid jet into the crossflow, the flame in a ram-combustor is unstable. In this study, the nonuniform flame and combustion instabilities due to lack of mixing performance were experimentally investigated. By performing correlations to predict the penetration height and break-up point, the spray and mixing characteristics of JICF have been studied. In particular, the improved correlations of penetration height are proposed in two distinctive domains depending on the X/d location of the crossflow.

  • Vent mixer can provide main flow directly into a recirculation region downstream of the mixer to enhance fuel-air mixing efficiency. Based on experimental results of three-dimensional velocity, vorticity and turbulent kinetic energy obtained by a stereoscopic PIV method, the performance of the vent mixer was compared with that of the step mixer which was used as a basic model. Thick shear layers of the vent mixer induced the increase of the penetration height. The turbulent kinetic energy mainly distributed along a boundary layer between the main flow and the jet plume. This turbulent field activates mass transfer in a mixing region, leading to the mixing enhancement.

  • Vitiated air heater which could supply air of 700K and 6 bar was designed conceptually for the firing test on the ground of the air breathing propulsion engines. This vitiated air heater consists of premixer with air and excessive gas oxygen, mixing head, combustor with gas passage, convergent-divergent nozzle and diffuser. the fuel was natural gas and/or liquefied natural gas. Through computational fluid dynamics, each component of the air heater was analyzed and flame-holding after ignition was investigated.

  • 직접분사식 디젤기관의 성능과 배기가스 문제에 여향을 주는 실린더 내에서의 연소형태는 크게 연료분사계와 흡입공기 유동계 두 가지에 의해 결정된다. 즉 분사율, 부사시기, 분무형태와 같은 분사계의 특성과 공기선회, 스퀴시(squish), 난류와 같은 공기 유동 특성에 의하여 연소형태가 결 정된다. 이러한 복잡한 연소형테를 기관 특성에 맞게 조정한다는 것은 대단히 어려운 문제인데 이것은 연료화 공기의 혼합이 연소실형상과 흡기계의 형상에 큰 영향을 받으며 연료가 액체 상 태로 연소실내로 들어와 분무과정을 통하여 증발이 되어야만 연소가 가능하기 때문이다. 특히 흡입공기 유동계에 있어서 현재의 직접 분사식 대젤기관의 흡입구 형상은 흡입공기의 운동에너 지에 모멘트를 가하여 연소실내에서 공기의 선희(swirl)를 발생시켜 줌으로써 연료와 공기의 혼 합기를 형성시키는 Helical type이 많이 이용되고 있다. 그러나 기관 성능과 배기가스 특히 NOx는 상반관계를 이루기 때문에 연소실내로 들어오는 흡입공기의 선희강도(swirl ratio)를 너무 강하게만 한다고 하여 좋은 결과를 얻을 수는 없다. 따라서 설계하고자 하는 각 기관에 있어서 요구되는 성능과 배기가스 문제를 만족하는 흡입공기의 선희강도가 얻어질 수 있도록 흡입구 형상을 설계한다는 것은 많은 연구와 경험이 요구되고 있다. 본 자료에서는 직접분사식 디젤기 관에 있어서 흡입공기의 최적 선희강도에 대한 설정방법과 흡입구 형상 설계를 위한 설계 이론 및 정상류 Rig test상에서의 흡입공기 선희강도의 평가방법을 소개하고자 한다.

  • Experimental investigations were carried out in an atmospheric pressure, optically accessible and laboratory-scale dump combustor. The objective of this study is to obtain the phase-resolved gas temperatures at different phases of the oscillating pressure cycle during unstable combustion. To see the effect of incomplete fuel-air mixing on phase-resolved temperature characteristics, CARS temperature measurements were performed. Results including phase-resolved averaged temperature, normalized standard deviation and temperature probability distribution functions (PDFs) were provided in this paper. It could be found that the profile of mean temperature showed the in-phase relationship with pressure cycle. Temperature PDFs give an insight on the flame behavior as well as NOx emission characteristics. These results would be expected to play an important role in better understanding of driving mechanisms and thermo-acoustic interactions.

  • The flow of combustor in scramjet engine is supersonic speed. So residence time and mixing ratio are very important factors for efficient combustion. This study used open cavity on fuel/air mixing model and laser schlieren was carried out to investigate flow characteristics around a jet orifice and a cavity. A source of illumination has 10 ns endurance time so it can observe unsteady flow characteristics efficiently. Pressure was measured by varying momentum flux ratio. And the change of critical ignition point was observed to change of momentum flux ratio.

  • The flow of combustor in scramjet engine has supersonic speed so that the residence time and mixing ratio are very important factors for the efficient combustion. This study used open cavity(L/D=4.8) as a fuel/air mixing model. Laser schlieren visualization and pressure measurement were carried out to observe the flow characteristics around a jet orifice and a cavity at the time of fuel injection. As a result of 10ns laser schlieren, unsteady flow which was around the cavity could be observed effectively. Pressure was measured that momentum flux ratio(J) was changed. And the change of critical ignition point could be observed by the momentum flux ratio changed.

  • In SCRamjet engine, combustion occurs in supersonic flow with airbreathing. SCRamjet is characterized by very short combustion time in combustor, so it is very important to be mixing the air and fuel in short duration. Several methods are suggested for mixing enhancement. Among these, cavity is selected to study for enhancement of mixing. The numerical simulation is performed in the case of freestream Mach number of 2.5 and cavity located in front of fuel jet injection. CFD-Fastran, commercial code with three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation with the Menter SST turbulence model were used. The results are obtained validate experiment results for same condition. Therefore, the numerical results show the mixing enhancement characteristics with a cavity.

  • 마하 수 6 이상인 극초음속 비행에는 스크램제트(SCRamjet : Supersonic Combustion Ramjet) 엔진이 가장 적합한 엔진으로 알려져 있고 현재 미국을 중심으로 이 엔진의 개발에 많은 노력을 기울이고 있다. 스크램제트 엔진의 성공적인 개발을 위해서는 초음속 공기 내에서 연료의 분사를 통한 가장 효율적인 연소를 유도할 수 있어야 한다. 초음속 상태의 공기와 연료의 혼합을 증대시키고 연소안정성을 향상시키는 방법으로 연소기 내에 인위적으로 경사충격파를 발생시키는 방안이 Marble 등에 의해 최초로 도입되었다. 본 연구에서는 스크램제트엔진 내의 연소기를 모델링하여 마하수 2.5의 초음속공기 유동 중앙에 수소 제트를 분사하여 초음속 수소-공기 화염을 만들고 연소기의 측면에 동일한 모양과 크기의 쐐기를 각각 부착시켜 평면 경사충격파를 발생시켰다 본 실험은 충격파가 초음속 화염에 미치는 영향을 연구한 최초의 실험연구이다.

  • To achieve efficient supersonic combustion within a manageable length, a successful fuel injection scheme must provide rapid mixing between fuel and airstream. In former days, various injection concepts have been investigated. Cavity flow is the open type, that is, length-to-depth ratio L/D=4.8, aft ramp angle is $22.5^{\circ}$. An experimental study on a transverse cross jet injection into a Mach 1.92 supersonic main stream which flows over a cavity was carried out to investigate the effect of the momentum flux ratio(J), the jet interaction characteristics, and the pressure distribution in the combustor and using the primary diagnostics : schlieren visualization and wall static pressure measurements. Fuel penetration height and jet interaction characteristics depend strongly on the momentum flux ratio.
