An experimental study on the dynamic behavior in an aero-valved pulsating combustor (공기밸브형 맥동연소기의 동적 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The experimental study was carried out to investigate the performance characteristics of the aero-valved pulsating combustor designed to increase the practical applications of the system. The geometric effect on the stable condition and the dynamic behavior of the system is identified. The equivalence ratio, the inflammability limit, the operating frequency, and thrust were also measured when the system oscillated stably. It is found that while the operating condition is sensitive to the diameter of the inlet pipe and the length of the tailpipe, the maximum value of the turn down ratio was obtained up to 3.2. The measured air flow rate shows that the equivalence ratio increases monotonously with the increasing fuel flow rate and decreasing air inlet diameter and tailpipe length. The measured operating frequency can be approximated by the simple linear equation and the discrepancy is within five percent. The system produced the maximum total thrust of 14N and the minimum specific fuel consumption of 0.155 Nm$^{3}$/h.N when the total thrust was 13N.

  • The optimal design and combustion analysis of the gas generator for Liquid Rocket Engine (LRE) were performed. A fuel-rich gas generator in open cycle turbopump system was designed for 101on1 in thrust with RP-1/LOx combination. The optimal design was done for maximizing specific impulse of main combustion chamber with constraints of combustion temperature and power matching in turbopump system. Results of optimal design show the dimension of length, diameter, and contraction ratio of gas generator. The configuration of the gas generator and the condition for performance which can maximize the objective function were determined and found to meet the design constraints. Also, the combustion analysis was conducted to evaluate the performance of designed chamber and injector of gas generator. And the effect of the turbulence ring was investigated on the mixing enhancement in the chamber.

  • Both numerical analysis and cold tests for the swirl coaxial type injector were performed to obtain the influence of spray angle, velocity ratio and liquid film thickness for pressure drop and recess. The basic experimental and numerical data obtained in this study can be applicable to the performance design of swirl coaxial type injector. Spray angle was not affected by the applied test pressure drop, but spray angle was affected by tangential velocity ratio and shape factors. Feasibility of numerical analysis for the liquid film thickness and spray angle was confirmed, and the change of liquid film thickness by tangential velocity ratio affected more seriously than pressure drop, and liquid film thickness was decreased with increasing tangential velocity ratio.

  • Linear stability analysis for combustion instability within a cylindrical port of solid rocket motor has been conducted. The analysis of acoustic energy has been performed by a commercial COMSOL code to obtain the mode function associated to each acoustic mode prior to the calculation of stability alpha. An instability diagnosis based on the linear stability analysis of Culick is performed where special interests have been focused on 5 stability factors(alpha) such as pressure coupling, nozzle damping, particle damping and additionally, flow turning effect and viscous damping to take into account the flow and viscosity effect near the fuel surface. The instability decay characteristics depending on the particle size is also analyzed.

  • In this study, a numerical approach was utilized to observe the phenomena in the ground combustion test of a gas generator for a ducted rocket with a plunger-type flow control device. The design factors were also identified through the analysis. It was observed that the pressure increase without the adhesion of the combustion product at the discharge pipe was quite similar to the analysis assuming a cone-shaped erosive burning effect. The pressure increase in most cases was similar to the analysis results when assuming the change in discharge pipe area due to the adhesion of combustion products. Moreover, it was also established that for a given grain shape and discharge flow area, the effect of the adhesion of combustion products has a significant effect on the combustion chamber pressure for cases over n=0.45.
