  • The primary purpose of this extensive test effort was to observe real-time operational performance characteristics associated with automotive grade fuel utilized by piston engine powered light aviation aircraft. In fulfillment of this effort, baseline engine operations were established with 100LL aviation grade fuel followed by four blends of automotive grade fuel. A comprehensive sea-level-static test cell/flight test data collection and evaluation effort were conducted to review operational characteristics of a carbureted light aircraft piston engine as related to fuel volatility, fuel temperature, and fuel system pressure. Presented herein are results, data, and conclusions drawn from test cell engine operation as well as flight test operation on 100LL aviation grade and four blends of automotive grade fuel.

  • Blocking of fuel filter in aircraft greatly can affect loss of pilot's life and of the aircraft. The investigation of failures is, thus, of vital importance in preventing incidents in advance. The fuel filter of aircraft plays an important role in filtering various debris from jet fuel. It filters impurities smaller than 10 ${\mu}m$ particles from jet fuel provided with the speed of 1,330 pounds per hour. It must be replaced per 500 h on the basis of operating time. However, even before reaching 500 h, the warning sign lighted on due to blocking of fuel filter. Recently, these similar defects have happened repeatedly. Therefore, in this study, the cause of blocking fuel filter in aircraft was investigated using various analytical techniques such as FT-IR microscopy, FE-SEM/EDS, and total sulfur determinator. Consequently, the blocking material of fuel filter was identified to an accelerator from the integral fuel tank sealant. And a mechanism for the formation of the blocking material of fuel filter by an accelerator blooming phenomenon in fuel tank was suggested.

  • Due to the depletion and environmental problems of fossil fuel, biomass has arisen as an alternative energy source. Biomass is a renewable and carbon-neutral source. However, it is moister and has lower energy density. Therefore, biomass needs thermal chemical conversion processes like gasification, and it does not only produce a flammable gas, called 'syngas', which consists of CO, H2, and CH4, but also some unwanted byproducts such as tars and some particulates. These contaminants are condensed and foul in pipelines, combustion chamber and turbine, causing a deterioration in efficiency. Thus this work attempted to find a method to remove tars and particles from syngas with a filter which adopts a pre-coating technology for preventing blockage of the filter medium. Hydrated limestone powder and activated carbon(wood char) powder were used as the pre-coat materials. The removal efficiency of the tars was 86 % and 80 % with activated carbon(wood char) coating and hydrated limestone coating, respectively.

  • Biomass, a carbon-neutral resource, is an alternative energy source for exhaustion of fossil fuel and environmental problems. Most of energy production systems using biomass operate with a thermal chemical conversion method. Amongst them, gasification generates syngas and applies to boilers or engines for the production of heat and electricity. However, Tar could be formed during the production of syngas and it is condensed at low temperature which may cause to clog the pipelines and combustion chamber, ultimately resulting in decrease of process efficiency. Thus this work utilized water and oily materials such as soybean oil, waste cooking oil and mineral oil for scrubbing liquid. The removal efficiency of Tar appeared 97%, 70%, 63% and 30% for soybean oil, waste cooking oil, mineral oil and water respectively.

  • This paper is a purpose to study and analyze the engine starting failure examples for LPG car. The first example, the researcher verified the phenomenon that didn't supply the fuel because of filter clogging by fine alien substance in the gas valve line when he inspected the emergency cutting valve. The second example, there was no the influence of gas leakage when the solenoid operated at first. But the damage part of solenoid assemblying face wad downed a durability according to running a valve. Eventually, the researcher checked on the phenomenon of engine stopping by no gas feeding in solenoid because of leaking of gas. The third example, the researcher sought that the wiring sheaths of connector fin between EGR 10A fuse and LPG switch verified the burn-out phenomenon due to the bad contacting as tension damage produced the overheating. Therefore, the manager of a car has to do pre-inspection no producing electric failure and he must maintain his car with optimum condition.

  • The improvement of cold start capability is one of the most challenging tasks to be solved for commercialization of fuel cell vehicle. In this study, cold start test and ice blocking test(IBT) of fuel cell stack were carried out under various operating conditions. This fuel cell stack can be thawed from -20$^{\circ}$C within 25s and the voltage change was found to be comprised of 4 steps; the first step is the voltage decrease by overpotential, the second step is the voltage increase by the cell temperature increase, the third step is the voltage decrease by ice blocking, and the last step is the voltage increase by thawing. Bootstrap startup was failed after shutdown at temperature under 40$^{\circ}$C because of much condensed water in the fuel cell. Quantitative estimation of cold start capability have been demonstrated by ice blocking test(IBT). In the results, it was found that cold start capability was improved double every 10$^{\circ}$C from 30$^{\circ}$C to 65$^{\circ}$C and enhanced by 30% at the condition of SR 3/4 compared to SR 1.5/2.0 and enhanced by 20% with dry purge condition compared to with RH 50% purge condition.
