  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of height of the shoe heel in a one leg standing posture on the muscle activity of the rectus abdominis, erector spinae, hamstring, and rectus femoris. Twenty healthy female subjects were asked to perform a one leg standing posture with three types of shoes, which had different heights of shoe heel, 0cm, 3cm, and 7cm. Surface electromyography was used to evaluate the activities of the right rectus abdominis, erector spinae, hamstring, and rectus femoris muscles. The data was analyzed by repeated one-way ANOVA and the muscle activities among three heights of shoe heel were compared. The results showed that the muscle activities of the erector spinae and rectus femoris increased significantly according to increase height of shoe heel (p<0.05). The activity of the rectus abdominis and hamstring were not significantly different among the three height of shoe heel (p>0.05). These results suggest that the height of shoe heel affects the lumbo-pelvic alignment and center of mass; therefore, high-heeled shoes lead to musculoskeletal pain in the lumbopelvic, hip, and knee areas.

  • This study is to investigate the relationships between heel height and macro-economic factors - recession and unemployment; and to analyze the time lags reflecting economic factors on heel height index using U.S. data. The life-history evolution theory was applied to propose the relationships studied. The data for the heel height measurements of women's shoes - pump style only - were obtained from US Vogue fashion editorial sections on spring and fall editions from 1950 to 2014. I divided the heel height by the length of the shoes in order to standardize the data. Total of 1581 samples were used, and heel height data were aggregated to create a yearly average. To explore the relationships between macro-economic factors and heel height, this study used OLS of Stata 13 program. The main findings show that unemployment rates influenced heel height for three years in a positive direction. Furthermore, the effects of unemployment rate from two years ago on the current heel height were very close to being on a significant level.

  • The objectives of this study were to investigate whether heel height changes in the U.S. market occur in a cyclical pattern and heel heights show greater within-year variability over time. Heel height data from U.S. Vogue's spring and fall editions were analyzed over the time period 1950~2014. A total of 1581 pieces of data were measured in millimeter units using Adobe Illustrator and standardized by dividing the height of the heel by the shoe length through the curved sole line. To analyze the cycle pattern of heel heights, the yearly averages were standardized by using three-year moving average technique to average out the irregular components of time series data and give a better indication of the long-term fluctuation of heel height. To identify the degree of within-year variability of heel height, the standard deviation of the average measurements for a year was calculated, and then decade averages were drawn from the yearly averaged standard deviation. One-way ANOVA was conducted to compare the within-year variability of data in heel height over the time period studied by decade. The results showed: First, there was a trend toward higher heels from the early 1950s to 2011. Second, four cyclical movements of heel height were observed from 1950 to 2007, and heel heights gradually decreased after 2008. Third, the within-year variability significantly increased over time, especially after the 1980s.

  • The present study has been undertaken to assess the electrical activity of right tibialis anterior, right gastrocnemius, right rectus femoris, right biceps femoris and right paralumbarvertebral muscles quantitatively by EMC while standing erect on the height of 0cm, 3cm, 5cm and 7cm heels. The inclinations of the heels were 0, 6, 11, 17 degrees, respectively. Foully young women ranging from 18 to 24 of age were examined. Electrical activity of various muscles while standing erect on the height of various heels were compared with that of 0cm heel. The results obtained were as follows : 1. Electrical activity of the tibialis anterior increased significantly as the height of heels became higher ; which was thought to be due to the effort to counteract the instability standing with high heels. 2. There was a significant increase in electrical activity of the gastrocnemius as the height of heels increased. It might be due to compensatory activity against shifting of the center of gravity forward. 3. There was a significant increase .in electrical activity of the rectus femoris and biceps femoris at the height of 3cm, 5cm and 7cm heels ; which seemed to be due to the effort to stabilize the knee joint. 4. Electrical activity of the paralumbarvertebral muscles increased significantly at the height of 5cm and 7cm heels ; which was considered to be due to the effort to prevent forward imbalance. From These results, it may be concluded that electrical activities of various postural muscles increase significantly while standing erect on the height of 3cm, 5cm and 7cm heels to counteract an instability of their posture and compensate the forward shifting tendency of the center of gravity.

  • The Sample was consist of 216 female adults who were selected with my convenience from residing women in and around Seoul, Korea. The result were as fellowing; According to the factor analysis of their foot discomfort, it is divided into 3 factors: the discomfort of whole body (factor 1), the discomfort of foot sole (factor 2), and the discomfort of toes (factor 3). And the foot part of discomfort is more frequent in the order of the big toe, 2·3 metatarsal bones, and the little toe. As the age gets older, the discomfort of foot sole and toes are reported more frequently, and, particularly, more student and office employees have the discomfort of whole body while more sales women and housewives have the discomfort of foot sole. In terms of the shoe types, the higher the hill height, the more the discomfort of foot sole with wearing the sharp toe. As the wearing time is longer, the discomfort of foot sole increases. Being related to the from patterns, the broad and short type has more of the discomfort of foot sole, the flat foot feel more discomfort from the entire body and the sole. Walking with leaning toward the frontal the discomfort on toes and sole increases.

  • Objective : To purpose of this study was the most of the ladies wear high-heeled shoes at lease 4 to 5 day a week but the effect of it's height on the lumbo-sacral legion angle has not been clearly defined. Method : Subject were 20 young ladies, who had majored in physical therapy of the Dae-gu Health College. Method 1. PACS system X-ray was used to measure the lumbo-sacral legion angle under the condition of bare foot, 3cm, 7cm high-heeled at standing position. 2. Spinal Mouse was used to measure the spinal segment motion angle and length under the condition of bare foot, 3cm, 7cm high-heeled at being Flexion-Extension position Result : The result of this study were as follow I. Significant statistical increase in lumbar lordosis was observed as the heel height was increased from bare foot to 7cm high-heeled(p<.05), but there was no significant difference in the lumbo-sacral angle & sacral angle(p>.05). 2. The Height and the weight of the subjects, their preference on the shoes didn't affect the lumbo-sacral lesion angle(p>.05) 3. The variation of the heel height didn't affect the spinal segment motion angle and length(p>.05). Conclusion : There is strong relationship between the high of heel with increasing the lumbar lordosis(p<.05).
