Analysis of the Charging and Discharging Performance of a New Wavy Cylindrical Shape Capsule (굴곡진 실린더형 캡슐 형상의 축열·방열 성능 해석)

  • This paper presents a numerical study on the constrained melting of a phase change material inside various capsule containers, using water and HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) as a PCM and a capsule material, respectively. The computations are based on an iterative, finite-volume numerical procedure that incorporates a single-domain enthalpy formulation for simulation of the phase change phenomenon. Using the enthalpy method, various capsule configurations, such as a capsule from E company, an isochoric cylinder capsule, an equivalent diameter sphere capsule, and an isochoric sphere capsule, are used to investigate the effect of capsule configurations on the charging and discharging performance. A transient three-dimensional model is used for each case. The simulation results show that the capsule from E company results in a higher melting and solidification rate of the PCM, than the other capsule configurations considered in this research.

A Review of TNT Equivalent Method for Evaluating Explosion Energy due to Gas Explosion (가스폭발에 따른 폭발에너지를 평가하기 위한 TNT 등가량 환산방법에 대한 고찰)

  • Accidents related to gas explosion are frequently happened in foreign countries and in Korea. For the evaluation and the analysis of gas explosions, TNT equivalent methods are used. In this study, the influence of the selection of chemical equation in TNT explosion and the selection of enthalpy of the products on the explosion energy, detonation pressure, velocity of detonation, and temperature was calculated. Depending on the chemical equations, the maximum detonation pressure can be 2 times higher than the minimum. As an example for applying TNT equivalent method, an explosion of methane gas in a confined volume was assumed. With the TNT equivalent, it was possible to predict the variation of peak overpressure and impulse with the distance from the explosion location.

  • 본 논문에서는 양자 역학적 분자 동역학(Quantum Mechanical/Molecular Mechanical-Molecular Dynamics, QM/MM-MD)을 통해 수용액에 녹아 있는 Potassium Thiocyanate의 dynamics를 연구했다. Umbrella sampling technique을 활용하여 association/dissociation에 해당하는 Free energy surface를 구했다. 두 개의 Free energy minimum이 녹아 있는 두 이온의 center of mass 사이의 거리가 $4{\AA}$일 때와 $5{\sim}6{\AA}$ 부근일 때 나타났으며 $4{\AA}$일 때 더 안정 했다. 본 논문에서는 $4{\AA}$일 때를 Contact Ion Pair(CIP) $6{\AA}$일 때를 Dissociation Ion Pair(DlP)라고 칭했다. 이 minimum들이 무엇인 지를 밝혀 내기 위해 추가 연구를 수행하였다. Free energy 상에서 가장 안정 할 때(CIP) solute인 Potassium thiocyanate의 구조를 살펴 봤더니 Potassium ion은 Thiocyanate ion의 Sulfur보다 Nitrogen side를 선호하였다. 그 원인을 알아보기 위해 salvation shell의 구조를 Radial distribution function을 통해 살펴 봤더니 물 분자가 Nitrogen보다 Sulfur와 더 강한 상호작용을 하고 있었다. 그로 인해 Potassium ion이 Nitrogen을 선호한단 결과가 나온 것이다. 한편, 두 번째 minimum은 물 분자가 Potassium 이온과 Thiocyanate 이온 사이에 flexible하게 bridging을 하는 구조였다. 또한 단순 양자 계산을 통해서도 비슷한 구조를 얻을 수 있었다. 그러나 QM 계산은 0K에서 수행하는 것이기 때문에 엔트로피 효과가 없는 계산이지만 본 연구는 온도 300K로 실제 용매와 가깝게 수행함으로써 고정되어 있는 구조가 아니라 엔트로피와 엔탈피가 균형적으로 존재하는 실제 용액 속에서의 구조를 처음으로 보여주는 것이다.

제분공정이 쌀가루의 특성에 미치는 영향

  • 습식쌀가루는 침지 후 롤밀(Roll mill)로 분쇄 후 건조하여 휘츠밀(Fitz Mill)로 분쇄하여 제조하였으며 건식쌀가루는 Roll mill, Fitz Mill, 볼밀(Ball mill)의 입자 크기별로 만들어 쌀가루의 특성을 검토하였다. 건식쌀가루의 경우 제분공정의 횟수가 증가할수록 자기가 증가됨을 나타내었고 a값과 b값의 감소를 나타내었다. 습식은 건식에 비해 유의적으로 높은 자기를 나타내었고 건식과 마찬가지로 제분공정이 길어질수록 같은 색도 양상을 나타내었다. 각 입자크기에 따른 색도는 습식이 더높은 밝기 값을 나타내었다. 제조공정별 단계에 따른 수분흡수지수(WAI) 및 수분용해지수(WSI)의 값은 건식, 습식 모두 roll mill < Fitz mill < Ball mill 순으로 높은 값을 나타냈고, 물에 침지되어 침출액이 제거된 습식쌀가루의 WAI, WSI는 건식쌀가루보다 낮은 값을 나타내었다. 입자크기에 따른 건식쌀가루의 WAI, WSI의값은 입자가 작을수록 높은 값을 나타낸 반면 습식쌀가루의 WAS의 값은 80-100Mesh의 입자에서 가장 높은 값을 나타냈었고, 100-140Mesh이후로는 WAS의 값이 감소 한 반면 WSI의 값은 입자가 작을수록 높은 값을 나타내었다. 호화양상은 습식쌀가루가 호화엔탈피 (ΔH)의 값이 높게 나타났으며 제분방법의 횟수가 증가할수록 전분손상도가 증가됨을 나타내었다.

  • The constrained melting inside an isothermally heated horizontal cylinder has been repeatedly investigated in many studies only for the moderate Rayleigh numbers. This study extends the range of Rayleigh numbers to systematically investigate the transition during melting processes, especially focusing on the complex multi-cellular flow pattern and thermal instability. The enthalpy-porosity formulation, with appropriate source terms to account for the phase change, is employed. For low Rayleigh numbers, initially developed single-cell base flow keeps the flow stable. For moderate Rayleigh numbers, even small disturbances in balance between thermal buoyance force and viscous force result in branched flow structure. For high Rayleight numbers, Benard type convection is found to develop within a narrow gap between thee wall and the unmelted solid. The marginal Rayleigh number and the corresponding wave number are in excellent agreement with those from linear stability theory.

  • Good cold start characteristics are essential for satisfactory operation of fuel cell vehicles. In this study, the melting process has been numerically investigated for a water tank frozen in cold weather The 2-D model of the tank containing ice and plate heaters was assumed and the unsteady melting process of the ice was calculated. The enthalpy method was used for the description of the melting process, and a FVM code was used to solve the problem. The feasibility study compared with other experiment showed that the developed program was able to describe the melting process well. From the numerical analysis carried out for different wall temperatures of the pate heaters, some important design factors could be found such as local overheating and pressurization in the tank.

  • The humidification of reactant gases is crucial for efficiently operating PEM (polymer electrolyte membrane) fuel cell systems and for improving the durability of these systems. The recycle of the energy and water vapor of exhaust gas improves the system performance especially in the case of automotive application. The available humidification methods are steam injection, nozzle spray, humidification by enthalpy wheel, membrane humidifier, etc. However, these methods do not satisfy certain requirements such as compact design, efficient operation and control. In this study, a hybrid humidification system consisting of a membrane humidifier and exhaust-air recirculation units was developed and the humidification performance of this hybrid humidifier was analyzed. Finally, a new practical method for optimal design of PEM-fuel-cell humidification system is proposed.

Study on of Process Parameters for Adsorption of Reactive Orange 16 Dye by Activated Carbon (활성탄에 의한 Reactive Orange 16 염료 흡착에 대한 공정 파라미터 연구)

  • The adsorption of reactive orange 16 (RO 16) dye by activated carbon was investigated using the amount of adsorbent, pH, initial concentration, contact time and temperature as adsorption variables. The investigated process parameters were separation coefficient, rate constant, rate controlling step, activation energy, enthalpy, entropy, and free energy. The adsorption of RO 16 was the highest at pH 3 due to the electrostatic attraction between the cations (H+) on the surface of the activated carbon and the sulfonate ions and hydroxy ions possessed by RO 16. Isotherm data were fitted into Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models by applying the evaluated separation factor of Langmuir (RL=0.459~0.491) and Freundlich (1/n=0.398~0.441). Therefore, the adsorption operation of RO 16 by activated carbon was confirmed as an appropriate removal method. Temkin's adsorption energy indicated that this adsorption process was physical adsorption. The adsorption kinetics studies showed that the adsorption of RO 16 follows the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and that the rate controlling step in the adsorption process was the intraparticle diffusion step. The positive enthalpy change indicated an endothermic process. The negative Gibbs free energy change decreased in the order of -3.16 <-11.60 <-14.01 kJ/mol as the temperature increased. Therefore, it was shown that the spontaneity of the adsorption process of RO 16 increases with increasing temperature.

Adsorption Thermodynamics of Polyamidoamide Epichlorohydrin Polymer in an Aqueous Fibrous Suspension (섬유 현탁액내 PAE 고분자 흡착의 열역학적 고찰)

  • This study was to examine the thermodynamic features of polyelecrolytic adsorption of polyamidoamine-epichlorohydrin(PAE) in a papermaking wet-end. The PAE adsorption experiments were conducted in a stirred jar containing an aqueous fibrous suspension and evaluated in terms of Langmuir and Freundlich parameters. The electrokinetic property of a stock was examined by measuring the zeta potential of each colloidal suspension. The polyelectrolytic PCD titration was employed to determine the adsorbed amounts of PAE polymer. The zeta potential of a stock, being varied significantly depending upon the addition of PAE polymer, showed initially a sharp increase and later an exponential decay as a function of time . The PAE adsorption exhibited a pseudo-Langmuir adsorption behavior at$20^{\circ}C$ , whereas its Freundlich power(v) increased in a proportional way at an elevated temperature. The train numbers calculated on the basis of adsorption thermodynamics were 7 to 8. The length of the extended loop of PAE was calculated as 215 nm at $20^{\circ}C$ and increased at a rate of 9% at every $10^{\circ}C$ rise in temperature. The PAE adsorption was proven to be an exothermic physisorption with the estimated adsorption enthalpy of -27 to -29 kJ/mol.

Storage Characteristics and Retrogradation Properties of Sulgidduk Added with Portulaca oleracea L. (쇠비름 첨가 설기떡의 저장성 및 노화 특성)

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the storage characteristics of Sulgidduk, a kind of rice cake, added with Portulaca oleracea L. The effect of P. oleracea L. paste (0, 1, 3, or 5%) on the storage qualities of Sulgidduk was evaluated during storage period at $20{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ for 3 days. As the amount of P. oleracea L. paste increased, loss of water in P. oleracea L. Sulgidduk decreased. Textural properties by texture profile analysis showed that hardness of Sulgidduk added with 5% P. oleracea L. paste was the lowest among treated samples. However, the hardness of all Sulgidduks increased during storage, regardless of the addition amount of P. oleracea L. paste. In accordance with the texture results, differential scanning calorimetry exhibited that the enthalpy of Sulgidduk with 5% P. oleracea L. addition was the lowest, indicating the delaying effect of P. oleracea L. paste on retrogradation of rice cake. From these results, the addition of P. oleracea L. to Sulgidduk extended shelf-life by delaying retrogradation.
