Development of Thrust Measurement System for Liquid Rocket Engine (액체로켓의 추력 측정 시스템 개발)

  • For liquid rocket engine test, one of most important design parameters to be measured is thrust. However, not like solid rocket motor, a liquid rocket engine is attached to the propellant feed system, control valve and many other safety systems. Without considering these effects, thrust data measured from firing test is not reliable and sometimes almost meaningless. In this research, new thrust measurement system, which includes all these side effects, was designed and fabricated.

A System Analysis of the Turbopump Type Liquid Rocket Engine (터보펌프식 액체로켓엔진의 시스템 해석)

  • A 1-D system design program has been developed for the preliminary design of the turbopump system in liquid rocket engines, which use LOx and kerosene as propellants. Gasgenerator cycle and staged combustion cycle were considered as turbopump type liquid rocket engine systems. In the system analysis, mass flow balance, thrust, specific impulse, mixture ratios, turbopump power, and turbine expansion ratio of engine system were analyzed. Results show that most of the parameters agree well with real engine parameters except gasgenerator. Therefore, the l-D system design program developed in this study can be used to derive the preliminary design parameters of a turbopump with any thrust level liquid rocket engine.

  • It is definitely required to control dispersion of the rocket engine performance in order to accomplish the mission of launch vehicle successfully. We performed the dispersion analysis of gas generator cycle LRE (liquid rocket engine) accompanied with ANASYN. As a result, the vacuum thrust dispersion of the engine was $+5.34\%,\;-5.27\%$ and the mixture ratio deviated $+9.07\%,\;-9.82\%$ from the nominal value due to the errors of components and engine inlet condition of propellants. By applying the gas generator regulator only, the dispersion of the engine performance increases. Error in turbine efficiency is the most influential factor to the dispersion of engine performance.

  • We successfully completed the development test for a 10-ton thrust liquid rocket engine using LOX+LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas, or Methane) with a high performance turbopump system. Resulting from the success of the regenerative-cooling capability using LNG, high pressure-generating capability and gas-generating performance, etc, methane engine with the product name CHASE-10 will be commercialized in the near future.

  • This paper deals with an optimal output tracking control for open-cycle liquid propellant rocket engine. For this purpose, we modeled simplified mathematical model of open-cycle liquid propellant rocket engine and designed optimal output feedback control system using combustion chamber pressure. For design the closed-loop system of open-cycle liquid propellant rocket engine, we designed optimal output feedback linear quadratic tracking control system using the linearized model and demonstrated the performance of the controller through numerical simulation.

  • Thrust measuring is one of the crucial factor to decide the performance of a liquid rocket engine when the engine development test, especially for the combustion chamber, is implemented. Calculating the thrust from a combustion pressure is used when direct measuring the thrust is impossible, but direct measuring the thrust is necessary and various methods for doing it more precisely should be considered. This paper introduces the preliminary design concept about the new thrust measurement system for the vertical firing test stand, which is introduced domestically for the first time, of a liquid rocket engine combustion chamber.

  • An axisymmetric compressible flow solver accounting for chemical equilibrium has been developed as an analysis tool exclusively suitable for performance prediction and optimum contour design of LRE thrust chamber. By virtue of several features focusing on user-friendliness and effectiveness including automatical grid generation and iterative calculations with changes in design parameters prescribed through only one keyword-type input file, a design engineer can evaluate very fast and easily the influences of various design inputs such as geometrical parameters and operating conditions on propulsive performance. Validations have been carried out for various aspects by detailed comparisons with the result of CEA code, experimental data of JPL nozzle, actual data for two historical engines, and ReTF data for KSR-III.

  • It is definitely required to control dispersion of the rocket engine performance in order to accomplish the mission of a launch vehicle successfully. A performance dispersion analysis was conducted for a gas generator cycle liquid rocket engine and the required pressure drops were estimated for engine tunning. As a result, the vacuum thrust dispersion of the engine was from +9.1% to -8.7% and the mixture ratio deviated from +9.7% to -9.6% from the nominal value due to the errors of components and the engine inlet condition of propellants. The required pressure drop in the LOx line to the combustor is higher than in the fuel line for same mixture ratio change.

  • 로켓 엔진 설계는 연소 과정 동안에 발생하는 모든 복잡한 현상을 고려하여 이루어져야하지만 이러한 물리적 변수들을 만족시키면서 설계를 하는 것은 불가능하기 때문에 최근 수치 해석의 발달로 내부 연소 과정에 대환 체계적 접근이 활발히 진행되고는 있으나 아직은 경험과 직관에 따라 각 변수의 중요성을 판단하고 있다고 해도 과언은 아니다. 최근 RP-1과 액체 산소를 추진제로 하는 연소실 압력 200psi, 최대 추력 2.8$\times$$10^{5}$lbf의 액체 엔진 개발을 목표로 본 연구팀은 분사기용 소형 엔진(연소실 압력 200psi, 추력 350lbf) 실험을 시점으로 단계적으로 추력을 증가시키면서 단열재의 삭마 실험과 연소 불안정성을 위한 실험을 준비하고 있다. 첫걸음으로서 135$^{\circ}C$로 FOOF형의 비동류형(unlike) 충돌 제트로 구성되는 3개의 인젝터가 배열된 분사기 시험용 엔진에 관한 실험을 수행 중에 있으나 상대적으로 매우 간단한 엔진임에도 불구하고 실험적으로 내부 연소 과정을 정확히 이해하는 것도 현재로서는 여전히 용이하지 않다.다.

  • Using liquefied natural gas as a fuel, water, natural gas and liquefied natural gas-cooled firing tests were conducted. With the viewpoint of characteristic velocity, and specific impulse, the effect of OF mixture ratio and fuel inlet temperature into a combustion chamber were analyzed. OF mixture ratio and fuel inlet temperature into a combustion chamber have great influence on the performance. Characteristic velocity and theoretical specific impulse attain the maximum value at 0.72~0.75 and 0.75 of OF mixture ratio, respectively. Engine performance has a tendency to increase, proportional to fuel inlet temperature into a combustion chamber affected by the regenerative cooling.
