  • Thermodynamic analysis is conducted on the first-order approximation model for turbines and compressors. It is shown that the adiabatic efficiency could be greater than unity, depending on the entropic mean temperature, entropy generation, thermal reservoir temperature, and heat transfer. Therefore, adiabatic efficiency applied to a diabatic control volume results in an error overestimating its performance. To resolve this overestimation, it is suggested that a reversible diabatic process be referred to as an ideal process to evaluate diabatic efficiency. The diabatic efficiency suggested in this work is proven to always be less than unity and it is smaller than the exergy efficiency in most cases. The diabatic efficiency could be used as a more general definition of efficiency, which would include adiabatic efficiency.

  • The concept of entransy has been proposed recently as a potential heat transfer mechanism and could be useful in analyzing and optimizing the heat-work conversion systems. This work presents an entransy analysis for the irreversible Carnot cycle by systematic balance formulations of the entransy loss, work entransy, and entransy dissipations, which are consistent with exergy balances. Additionally, several forms of system efficiency are introduced based on entransy for the appreciation of the optimal system performance. The effects of the source temperature and irreversible efficiencies on the optimal conditions for system efficiencies are systematically investigated for both dumping and non-dumping cases of used source fluid. The results show different trends in entransy efficiencies when compared to the conventional efficiencies of energy and exergy, and represent another method to assess the effective use of heat source in power generation systems.

  • This paper describes an analysis on performance and exergy of R744-R404A cascade refrigeration system with internal heat exchanger to optimize the design for the operating parameters of this system. The operating parameters considered in this study include subcooling and superheating degree, internal heat exchanger and compression efficiency, evaporation and condensation temperature in the R744 low- and R404A high- temperature cycle, respectively. The main results are summarized as follows : As the evaporation temperature of cascade heat exchanger increases, the COP of R404A high-temperature cycle increases. But the COP of R744 low-temperature cycle decreases, and the COP of total cascade cycle is almost constant. As cascade evaporation temperature increase, the exergy loss in the R404A condenser and the R744 internal heat exchanger is the largest and the lowest among all components, respectively. Therefore, the exergy loss in the condenser and compressor of R404A must be decreased to enhance the COP of R744-R404A cascade refrigeration system.

  • This paper presents the new cascade liquefaction cycles using $CO_2-C_2H_6-N_2$ and $CO_2-N_2$. The performance and exergy of cascade liquefaction cycles are analyzed using HYSYS software and then confirmed the possibility of these cycles for LNG-FPSO ship. From the comparison of performance and exergy loss of these cycles, the cascade liquefaction cycles using $CO_2-C_2H_6-N_2$ showed higher performance and the cycle using $CO_2-N_2$ presented higher exergy loss. The cascade liquefaction cycle using $CO_2-N_2$ is lower efficiency and higher compressor work compared to the optimized cascade liquefaction cycle using $C_3H_8-C_2H_4-C_1H_4$. But, if the efficiency of $N_2$ cycle in these liquefaction cycles is improved, it is possible to apply the cascade liquefaction cycle using $CO_2-C_2H_6-N_2$ and $CO_2-N_2$ to LNG-FPSO ship due to the simple composition device of these cycles.

  • The thermodynamic characteristics of a trilateral cycle with water as a working fluid have been theoretically investigated for an electric generation system to recover the waste heat of the exhaust gas from a diesel engine used for the propulsion of a large ship. As a result, when a heat source was given, the efficiencies of energy and exergy were maximized by the specific conditions of the pressure and mass flow rate for the working fluid at the turbine(expander) inlet. In this case, as the condensation temperature increased, the volume expansion ratio of the turbine could be reduced properly; however, the exergy loss of the heat source and exergy destruction of the condenser increased. Therefore, in order to recover the waste exergy from the topping cycle, the combined cycle with a bottoming cycle such as an organic Rankine cycle, which is utilized at relatively low temperatures, was found to be useful.

  • Experiments have been peformed, using pure refrigerant R134a and a zeotropic refrigerant mixture R290/R600a(60%/40%) and their performances have been analyzed by the first and second laws(exergy method) of thermodynamics. From the experimental results, variations of compressor speed and air temperature have a great effect on the performance of the system. The sum of exergy losses in compressor and evaporator is about 60% of total exergy loss, using refrigerant R134a, so it is necessary to improve the performance of compressor and evaporator. According to the experimental results using refrigerant mixture of R290/R600a(60%/40%), the exergy losses in heat exchange processes are decreased but the exergy loss in throttling process is increased. The performance of the system has been improved by 20∼30% compared with that of R134a and exergy losses have been also reduced.

  • Interest in the energy efficiency and carbon reduction technology is increasing. Many studies have done on the technologies of heat recovery systems, because over 30% of the total energy is released into the atmosphere with the exhaust gas flow. In this study, the Rankine cycle is analyzed in the optimum conditions given through the previous work. The result shows that the exergy efficiency is 0.53 and the output is 1.43 kW at the condition of the pressure ratio of 0.6 and the mass flow rate of 0.7.

  • The heat of evaporation (cold energy) of LNG is the energy consumed in the production of LNG. This energy amounts to 14% of the NG. In Pyungtak LNG terminal, it is about 96 MW in 1993. In order to utilize the cold energy, the cold power generation systems are investigated: The Rankine cycle using the low temperature energy, the partial expansion cycle using the pressure energy, and the Linde process which is a combined cycle of the Rankine and the partial direct expansion cycle. The commercial simulator, ASPEN Plus, is used. The conceptual design data are obtained from the current facilities of the Pyungtak LNG terminal. The performances of three systems are evaluated. The amount of electric power ranges iron 3 MW to 6MW. The optimum energy efficiency is about 37%. The optimum design conditions are obtained for the partial direct expansion (PDE) cycle. The performance of the PDE cycle is supposed to be comparable to that of the Rankine cycle if the areas of the total heat exchanger of the both cycle are equal.
