Study on the Hardness Measurement of Earthenware : Focusing on the Cup of the Baekje (토기의 경도측정법 연구: 백제시대 배(杯)류를 중심으로)

  • We have investigated the suitable measuring method and condition on the hardness testing for the earthenwares excavated from Poongnap mud castle in Hanseong Baekje period. The earthenwares which used on hardness testing have been classified according to Mohs hardness and external form and color. The Ultrasonic and Equotip testing method have used to the hardness testing on the surface of the earthenwares and the Rockwell and Micro-vickers testing methods have used to the hardness testing on the cross section of the earthenwares. As the results, the two methods applied to the surface of the earthenwares were very hard on the precise measurement and the measuring values were incompatible with the tendency classified according to Mohs hardness and external form and color. On the testing for the cross section of earthenware, the Rockwell-superficial hardness testing method was more suitable for the soft texture earthenware and highest reproducibility of the measuring value obtained at the test load and indentor are 15kgf and 1/16 “iron ball, respectively. The Micro-Vickers hardness testing method was suitable for the hard texture earthenware and highest reproducibility and accuracy of the measuring value obtained at the test load is 100gf. This results show strong possibility of progress on the classifying and comparing study for hardness of the earthenware and therefore active studies are expected on the field.

An Experimental Application of Consolidants Using Artificially Weathered Stones (인공풍화암을 이용한 강화제의 적용실험 연구)

  • This study was to assess the effect of consolidation for intension measures of stone cultural heritage using artificially weathered stones. We have prepared four kinds of stones (Gyeongju Namsan Granite, Iksan Granite, Yeongyang Sandstone, Jeongseon Marble), and manufactured fresh, weathered and highly weathered stone samples by thermal shock for each rock type. The samples were treated with three consolidants (Wacker OH 100, Remmers KSE 300, 1T1G) by three methods {immersion, capillary rise (partial immersion), spray}, and tested for weight, porosity, ultrasonic velocity, Equotip hardness and color before and after treatment. As a result, the effect of consolidation was widely influenced by porosity and treatment methods. Wacker OH 100 was shown the highest consolidation effect in almost every stone sample.

Effect of Consolidation using Artificial Porous Material for Stone Cultural Property (인공 다공질체를 이용한 석조문화재 강화제의 처리효과)

  • In order to clarify the effect of consolidant, the artificial porous material with low intensity was manufactured using granite powder and Portland cement. We have prepared four kinds of alkoxysilane system consolidants, a acrylic resin and a epoxy resin and investigated about characteristics before and after consolidation. As a result of the research, Silres BS OH 100 was effective for density and surface hardness. SS-101 with hydrophobicity and Site SX-RO with hydrophilicity had the good durability over salts weathering. On the other hand, Syton HT-50 and Paraloid B72 were easily destructed by salt weathering because they were concentrated on surface area by the low penetration depth. Araldite 2020 was the most effective consolidant for improvement of physical properties.

  • Field experiments for Conservation damage on selected spots were carried out prior to direct conservation treatments for Bangudae Petroglyphs in Ulsan. It was found that there is a big difference in treatment effects according to the treatment technique and application rather than on the treatment material use. Based on the results of this study, a plan for the conservation treatment of Bangudae Petroglyphs will be suggested by providing new materials and application techniques for cracks, adhesive application and consolidation by conducting artificial weathering tests and continued monitoring.

Material Characteristics and Application Efficiency of Treatments for Usuki Stone Buddha Statues in Japan (일본 우스키 석불군의 재질특성과 보존처리제 적용 효과)

  • The Usuki Stone Buddha Statues in Japan are carved on mainly dark gray welded lapilli tuff accompanied by lenticular fiamme. This rock is composed of matrix which contains feldspar and opaque minerals with some phenocrysts of quartz and feldspar. The matrix is slight to highly welded. The statues have been weathered and weakened by salt and freezing of water. To enhance the mechanical properties of the rock, consolidants and water repellents were applied. The absorption ratio of the rock was highly decreased after the treatment of the water repellents, the consolidant OH 100, as well. Ultrasonic velocity revealed similarly higher values in the treated rock by KSE 300 and OH 100, compared to non-treated rock. KSE 300, especially, highly increased the Equotip surface hardness. All studied consolidants and water repellents were found to change the original color of the stone. SNL, specifically, resulted the significant change in color. In addition, KSE 300 were observed to improve resistance to weathering such as microcrack and fracture through freezing-thawing test after treatment.

Deterioration Characteristic Analysis for Stone Properties in the Taereung Royal Tomb of the Joseon Dynasty using Nondestructive Analysis (비파괴 분석을 활용한 조선왕릉 태릉 석조물의 손상특성 분석)

  • The Taereung Royal Tomb from the Joseon Dynasty is the tomb of Empress Munjeong, the second queen of King Jungjong, and it contains various types of stone artifacts. All of these stone artifacts were constructed using coarse- to medium-grained biotite granite. The major types of deterioration of the stone artifacts are identified as surface weathering and biological contaminants. Exfoliation (145 sculptures), granular decomposition (138 sculptures), and repair materials (156 sculptures), along with biological contaminant algae (154 sculptures), lichen (165 sculptures) and moss (97 sculptures), have a high occurrence frequency. In particular, it is deemed that immediate conservation treatment is required, as biological deterioration (algae) represents the most serious condition (grade 3 or higher in 94% of all stones), and it is thought that exfoliation and granulation decomposition are required for long-term conservation management. As a result of equo -tip hardness and ultrasonic measurement, more than 70% of stones were found to have very weak physical properties. Through hyperspectral analysis, organisms were shown to inhabit more than 80% of the surface of burial mound stone artifacts, and P (phosphorus), S (sulfur), Cl (chlorine), and Ca (calcium) were detected in this area. This is because Taereung Royal Tomb has been exposed to the outdoors for hundreds of years and has been weathered by physical, chemical, and biological factors. Therefore, among the stone artifacts in the Taereung Royal Tomb, those with high physical weathering grades are considered to require consolidation to reinforce them physically. Since organisms are highly likely to cause stone damage, they must be removed via dry and wet cleaning. In addition, in order to delay the reoccurrence of organisms following conservation treatment, it is necessary to regularly clean up the soil that has flowed into the burial mound, and to monitor conservation conditions over the long term.
