  • Purpose: This study investigated the factors associated with suicidal ideation in the Korean Echo Generation using 2012 Korea Health Panel Data. Methods: The 2012 Korea Health Panel Data were collected from February 2012 to July 2012 and included 2,303 people who responded to a question asking whether they had experienced suicidal ideation. The data were analyzed by chi-square and multiple logistic regression test using SPSS 22.0. Results: The rate of suicidal ideation was 4.2% in the Echo Generation. Factors associated with suicidal ideation in the Echo Generation revealed that the following variables increased the rate of suicidal ideation: sex(odd ratio: 2.39, CI: 1.39-4.09), education(odd ratio: 1.95, CI: 1.08-3.52), depression(odd ratio: 12.06, CI: 6.92-21.03), frustrating experience(odd ratio: 2.52, CI: 1.22-5.20), anxiety about the future(odd ratio: 14.58, CI: 3.20-66.41), self-rated health status(odd ratio: 2.39, CI: 1.39-4.09 and odd ratio: 6.41, CI 2.87-14.33). Conclusion: This study provides a preliminary examination of the factors associated with suicidal ideation in the Echo Generation. A more careful examination may be warranted.

  • This study investigated the effects of self-esteem on the depression of baby boomer and eco-boomer generation (the children of baby boomers) living alone. It was identified from the point of view of comparison between the two groups. Using the 15th data of the 2020 Korea Welfare Panel, an independent sample t-test and hierarchical regression analysis were conducted with the data of baby boomers who live alone (born in 1955-1963) and eco-boomers who live alone (born in 1979-1992). The results of this study show that baby boomers who live alone had lower levels of education, income, and health condition than the eco-boomers who live alone, and had higher level of depression, but relatively lower level of self-esteem. In both groups, self-esteem had an effect on depression, but it was confirmed that the influence was greater in the group of baby boomers (Adjusted R2 .259) than in eco-boomers (Adjusted R2 .083). Based on the results of this study, practical and policy alternatives were suggested to prevent the depression among middle-aged, elderly people, and young adults who live alone.

  • In the present paper, the ultrasound blood images were measured at both the human radial artery(RA) and common carotid artery(CCA), depending on the age, and the pulsatility index of blood echogenicity(PIBE) was analyzed. In addition, the ultrasound blood images were measured at both RA and CCA of both the stroke patients and the control group, and PIBE was compared. PIBE of RA for the young group was similar with that for the old group ($0.13{\pm}0.11$ and $0.16{\pm}0.03$). PIBE of CCA for the young group, however, was larger than that for the old group ($0.70{\pm}0.21$ and $0.32{\pm}0.01$), and was more variable depending on the subject. Similarly, the fibrinogen concentrations of the patients ($336{\pm}61$ and $340{\pm}126mg/dl$) were more than that of the control group ($264{\pm}38$ and $257{\pm}43mg/dl$), for both RA and CCA. The results indicate the possibility of the ultrasonic test on the correlation between erythrocyte aggregation and stroke, and it is expected that the in-vivo EA measurement would be clinically useful.

  • This study examined the relationships between socio-demographic background variables, parent-child differentiation, marital stability, and psychological well-being in 382 eco-boomer married women (born in 1979-1992) whose mothers were born in 1955-1963. As a result, the higher the average monthly contact frequency with the mother, the greater the intimacy (connectivity) with the mother. The higher the number of years of marriage, the lower the marriage stability, the higher the education level, and the higher the average household income were related to the higher the self-acceptance. In addition, compared to women in single-income families, married women who receive help raising their children from their mothers did not form reliable relationships with others or show satisfaction compared to women who do not receive the assistance. Those who were well connected with their mother (or had high intimacy) had higher marriage stability, and those with higher marriage stability had higher psychological well-being. They also had better relationships with other people when married women had a higher level of parent-child differentiation.

  • In this study, we expected the perceived difference of job calling and decent jobs between recent generation and baby-boomer and eco baby-boomer generation. Understanding perceptions of jobs by current generation that are perceived as lifetime jobs rather than lifetime workplace will make some valuable contributions to future job research and policy. The aim of the study was to examine the subjective perception of decent jobs among university students who are ready to go to labor market. By using Q methodology, we extracted 291 Q statements and 47 Q samples. In addition, 31 subjects classified Q samples into Q distributed tables. We used Ken-Q Analysis program. In the results, we found five types of perceived subjectiveness on the decent jobs, which were interests-seeking, balance-seeking, toward organization, power-seeking, and career development. These results confirm the diversity of perceptions of decent jobs. Then, we suggested policy implications to help the labor market entry based on the results.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare the first echo boomer to second in the needs for family strengths and family functions, after controlling the sociodemographic characteristics. Method: For this study, a survey was conducted with 406 never-married young adults, which has 182 first echo boomers and 224 seconds echo boomers as using the same self-report questionnaire. Results: First, the two echo boomer groups exhibited similar patterns in their perception of the three family strengths, positive family values, pursuit of coexistence, and spiritual value, in that order. On the other hand, in regard to family functions, groups' perceived emotion entertainment leisure function as core functions of the family, but the second echo boomers, unlike the first echo boomers, expressed a higher need for economic functions rather than functions for children generation. Second, the analysis of this study indicated that, even in cases where first and second echo boomers had the same social-demographic characteristics, the latter in contrast with the former tended not to regard spiritual values such love for shared ethical values, compassion, and religious beliefs as a family strength, and did not require functions for children generation of the family. Conclusions: From these findings, the differences in the needs for family strengths and functions expressed by the two generations belonging to two different birth cohorts were influenced by various changes in Korean society occurring between the two generations, such as the social divergence in the functions of care and nurture, the increase in one-person and childless households, and the weakening of kinship-centered or communitarian forms of familism.

  • This study seeks to clarify the influence of the stage migration which has proceeded through generations, on the population growth of local cities in the case of Jeollabuk-do. For this, setting to baby boomer as parents generation and echo boomer as their children, this study traces each generation's birth, distribution and the process of selective migration using aggregate level data. And the stage migration is analyzed by O-D, divided into three regions in each; Jeollabuk-do rural areas, Jeollabuk-do cities and other provinces. The major findings of this study are as follows. First, it was estimated that the number of the baby boomer births in Jeollabuk-do rural areas was seven times more numerous than in cities. Second, both rural and urban born baby boomers overwhelmingly moved into other provinces, especially Seoul metropolitan area and metropolis in their selective migration processes. However, there was also migration stream from rural areas to cities in Jeollabuk-do and the amount of this stream was approximately equal to the amount of outflux from cities in Jeollabuk-do to other provinces. Third, due to baby boomers' stage migration, from rural to urban, echo boomers were born in cities more than in rural areas. Fourth, urban born echo boomers still have moved into other provinces just like their parents generation in selective migration process. But comparing with baby boomer, the number of echo boomers influx from rural areas to cities has decreased. Consequentially the population of echo boomer in Jeollabuk-do cities also has decreased. Finally, the stage migration has been a basic cause of the social growth of urban population, and also influenced on the natural growth, closely connected with migrants' life course, such as marriage, childbirth and rearing. Therefore, this study concludes that the stage migration through generations is one of the crucial factor to understand the population growth in local cities.
