In this study, a nonlinear impact analysis was performed to evaluate the safety and damage of an eco-pillar debris barrier with a hollow cross-section, which was proposed to improve constructability and economic efficiency. The construction of concrete eco-pillar debris barriers has increased recently. However, there are no design standards concerning debris barriers in Korea, and it is difficult to find a study on performance evaluations in extreme environments. Thus, an analysis of an eco-pillar debris barrier was done using the rock impact speed, which was estimated from the debris flow velocity. The diameters of rocks were determined by ETAG 27. The impact position, angles, and rock diameter were considered as variables. A concrete nonlinear material model was applied, and the estimation of damage was done by ABAQUS software. As a result, the damage ratio was found to be less than 1.0 at rock diameters of 0.3 m and 0.5 m, but it was 1.39 when the diameter was 0.7 m. This study could be used as basic data on impact force in the design of the cross section of an eco-pillar debris barrier.
Advancements in thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane technology for nanofiltration is crucial for removing pollutants from natural resources. In recent years, various metal-organic framework (MOF) modifications have been tested to overcome the drawbacks that are inevitable with conventional thin-film composite (TFC) and TFN membranes. In general, MIL-101(Cr), UiO-66, ZIF-8, and HKUST-1 [Cu3(BCT2)] are MOFs that were proven to exhibit excellent membrane performance in terms of solvent permeability and solute rejection; their respective studies are reviewed in this article. Other novelties, such as the simultaneous use of different MOFs and unique MOF layering techniques (e.g., dip-coating, spray pre-disposition, Langmuir-Schaefer film, etc.) are also discussed as they present alternate solutions for membrane enhancement and/or preparation convenience. Not only are these MOF-modified TFN membranes frequently shown to improve separation performance from their respective TFC and TFN membranes, but many reports also explain their potential for a cost-effective and environmentally friendly process. In this review the thin film nanocomposite nanofiltration membrane is discussed.
Photothermal therapy is a treatment that necrotizes selectively the abnormal cells, in particular cancer cells, which are more vulnerable to heat than normal cells, using the heat generated when irradiating light. In this study, we synthesized a reduced graphene oxide with carboxyl groups (CRGO)-gold nanorod (AuNR) nanocomposite for photothermal treatment. Graphene oxide (GO) was selectively reduced and exfoliated at high temperature to synthesize CRGO, and the length of AuNR was adjusted according to the amount of AgNO3, to synthesize AuNR with a strong absorption peak at 880 nm, as an ideal photothermal agent. It was determined through FT-IR, thermogravimetric and fluorescence analyses that more carboxyl groups were conjugated with CRGO over RGO. In addition, CRGO exhibited excellent stability in aqueous solutions compared to RGO due to the presence of carboxylic acid. The CRGO-AuNR nanocomposites fabricated by electrostatic interaction have an average size of ~317 nm with a narrow size distribution. It was confirmed that under radiation with a near-infrared 880 nm laser which has an excellent tissue transmittance, the photothermal effect of CRGO-AuNR nanocomposites was greater than that of AuNR due to the synergistic effect of the two photothermal agents, CRGO and AuNR. Furthermore, the results of cancer cell toxicity by photothermal effect revealed that CRGO-AuNR nanocomposites showed superb cytotoxic properties. Therefore, the CRGO-AuNR nanocomposites are expected to be applied to the field of anticancer photothermal therapy based on their stable dispersibility and improved photothermal effect.
As rock bolts become one of the main support systems in tunnels and underground structures, the integrity of the rock bolts affects the safety of these structures. The purpose of this study is the evaluation of rock bolt integrity using wavelet transforms of the guided ultrasonic waves by using transmission test in the field. After several rock bolts with various defect ratios are embedded into a large scale concrete block and rock mass, guided waves are generated by a piezo disk element and measured by an acoustic emission (AE) sensor. The captured signals are analyzed in the time-frequency domain using the wavelet transform based on a Gabor wavelet. Peak values in the time-frequency domain represent the interval of travel time of each echo. The energy velocities of the guided waves increase with an increase in the defect ratio. The suitable curing time for the evergy velocity analysis is proposed by the laboratory test, and in-situ tests are performed in two tunnelling sites to verify the applicability of rock bolt integrity tests performed after proposed curing time. This study proves that time-frequency domain analysis is an effective tool for the evaluation of the rock bolt integrity.

Steam methane reforming is currently the most widely used technology for producing hydrogen, a clean fuel. Hydrogen produced by steam methane reforming contains impurities such as carbon monoxide, and it is essential to undergo an appropriate post-purification step for commercial usage, such as fuel cells. Recently, membrane separation technology has been gaining great attention as an effective purification method; in this study, we evaluated the feasibility of using commercial polysulfone membranes for biogas upgrading to separate and recover hydrogen from a hydrogen/carbon monoxide gas mixture. Initially, we examined the physicochemical properties of the commercial membrane used. We then conducted performance evaluations of the commercial membrane module under various conditions using mixed gas, considering factors such as stage-cut and operating pressure. Finally, based on the evaluation results, we carried out simulations for process design. The maximum H2 permeability and H2/CO separation factor for the commercial membrane process were recorded at 361 GPU and 20.6, respectively. Additionally, the CO removal efficiency reached up to 94%, and the produced hydrogen concentration achieved a maximum of 99.1%.
Carbon capture, and storage (CCS) is important for the reduction of greenhouse gases and achieving carbon neutrality. CCS focuses on storing captured CO2 permanently in underground reservoirs. CO2-enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR) is one form of CCS, where CO2 is injected into the underground to enhance oil recovery. CO2-EOR not only aids in the extraction of residual oil but also contributes to carbon neutrality by storing CO2 underground continuously. CO2-EOR can be classified into miscible and immiscible methods, with the CO2-water alternating gas (CO2-WAG) technique being a representative approach within the miscible method. In CO2-WAG, water and CO2 are alternately injected into the reservoir, enabling oil production and CO2 storage. The WAG method allows for controlling the breakthrough of injection fluids, providing advantages in oil recovery. It also induces hysteresis in relative permeability during the injection and production process, expanding the amount of trapped CO2. In this study, the effects of enhancing oil recovery and storing CO2 underground during CO2-EOR were presented. Additionally, cases of CO2-EOR application in relation to CCS were introduced.
This study presents a well spacing design for coalbed methane(CBM) reservoirs using the experimental results of methane gas adsorption measurement of coal samples obtained from North Kalimantan Island, Indonesia. The gas productivity analysis shows that the cumulative gas production increases as the Langmuir volume increases. This indicates that the maximum gas adsorption directly affects the gas production. In addition, the maximum gas production increases with the increase of reservoir permeability, and the dewatering period is shortened. In particular, the cumulative gas production increases as the production influence area increases. However, when comparing productivity per unit well, the maximum cumulative gas production is found between 2,000 ft of depth and 80-160 acres of the influence area. When reservoir depth and production influence area are considered simultaneously, the results of the appropriate well depth and spacing calculations show that gas productivity is highest between 600-2,000 ft. In this case, it is appropriate to design well spacing in the range of 80-160 acres. Therefore, well spacing design considering coalbed depth in undeveloped CBM reservoirs can be accomplished using gas sorption test results from coal samples.

In this study, we investigated a method of growing single crystal 𝛽-Ga2O3 thin films on a c-plane sapphire substrate using MOCVD. We confirmed the optimal growth conditions to increase the crystallinity of the 𝛽-Ga2O3 thin film and confirmed the effect of the ratio between O2 and Ga precursors on crystal growth on the crystallinity of the thin film. The growth temperature range was 600~1100℃, and crystallinity was analyzed when the O2/TMGa ratio was 800~6000. As a result, the highest crystallinity thin film was obtained when the molar ratio between precursors was 2400 at 1100℃. The surface of the thin film was observed with a FE-SEM and XRD ω-scan of the thin film, the FWHM was found to be 1.17° and 1.43° at the and (${\bar{2}}01$) and (${\bar{4}}02$) diffraction peaks. The optical band gap energy obtained was 4.78 ~ 4.88 eV, and the films showed a transmittance of over 80% in the near-ultraviolet and visible light regions.

In the current medical field, lead is widely used as a radiation shield. However, the lead weight is very heavy, so wearing protective clothing such as apron is difficult to wear for long periods of time and there is a problem with the danger of lethal toxicity in humans. Recently, many studies have been conducted to develop substitute materials of lead to resolve these problems. As a substitute materials for lead, barium(Ba) and iodine(I) have excellent shielding ability. But, It has characteristics emitting characteristic X-rays from the energy area near 30 keV. For patients or radiation workers, shielding materials is often made into contact with the human body. Therefore, the characteristic X-rays generated by the shielding material are directly exposured in the human body, which increases the risk of increasing radiation absorbed dose. In this study, we have developed the FLUKA transport code, one of the most suitable elements of radiation transport codes, to remove the characteristic X-rays generated by barium or iodine. We have verified the reliability of the shielding fraction of the structure of the structure shielding by comparing with the MCPDX simulations conducted as a prior study. Using the MCNPX and FLUKA, the double layer shielding structures with the various thickness combination consisting of barium sulphate ($BaSO_4$) and bismuth oxide($Bi_2O_3$) are designed. The accuracy of the type shown in IEC 61331-1 was geometrically identical to the simulation. In addition, the transmission spectrum and absorbed dose of the shielding material for the successive x-rays of 120 kVp spectra were compared with lead. In results, $0.3mm-BaSO_4/0.3mm-Bi_2O_3$ and $0.1mm-BaSO_4/0.5mm-Bi_2O_3$ structures have been absorbed in both 33 keV and 37 keV characteristic X-rays. In addition, for high-energy X-rays greater than 90 keV, the shielding efficiency was shown close to lead. Also, the transport code of the FLUKA's photon transport code was showed cut-off on low-energy X-rays(below 33keV) and is limited to computerized X-rays of the low-energy X-rays. But, In high-energy areas above 40 keV, the relative error with MCNPX was found to be highly reliable within 6 %.

Compton cameras overcome several limitations of conventional mechanical collimation based gamma imaging devices, such as pin-hole imaging devices, due to its electronic collimation based on coincidence logic. Especially large-scale Compton camera has wide field of view and high imaging sensitivity. Those merits suggest that a large-scale Compton camera might be applicable to monitoring nuclear materials in large facilities without necessity of portability. To that end, our research group have made an effort to design a large-scale Compton camera for safeguard application. Energy resolution or position resolution of large-area detectors vary with configuration style of the detectors. Those performances directly affect the image quality of the large-scale Compton camera. In the present study, a series of Geant4 Monte Carlo simulations were performed in order to examine the effect of those detector parameters. Performance of the designed large-scale Compton camera was also estimated for various monitoring condition with realistic modeling. The conclusion of the present study indicates that the energy resolution of the component detector is the limiting factor of imaging resolution rather than the position resolution. Also, the designed large-scale Compton camera provides the 16.3 cm image resolution in full width at half maximum (angular resolution: $9.26^{\circ}$) for the depleted uranium source considered in this study located at the 1 m from the system when the component detectors have 10% energy resolution and 7 mm position resolution.
